  • 09/25/2024 Cedar Falls, IA. The L571 had an odd ball leader as it headed West bound along the Cedar River! 09/27/2024 Burlington, IA. After a tip from a fellow railfan in Fort Madison I headed North to Burlington and found this CNW jewel. The GP 40 was in rough shape but still had readable "Employee Owned" heralds! This was my first visit to the BNSF yard in Burlington. Hopefully next time I can catch the lift bridge in action!

    The CNW GP 40 came from Conrail in the early 1980s. I remember seeing these working at Adam's Wi. In fresh paint back in 1982 not long after they aquire them from Conrail.

    That was quite the mix of power on the CN Freight. The lead former Citirail unit appears on quite a number of their main line Freights virtually system-wide but I think that's the first time you've got one. Talk about a boring train consist with only two gondolas and two TBOX cars. Those shots at Burlington Junction make it look like more of a salvage operation. Poor 5515 is tired as it started life with New York Central and the engine at the end of the track while painted is missing a lot of items. The BJRR started at least 15 or 20 years ago with some small industrial switcher then had an Alco S3 lettered for Texaco. They also had one or two Alco C415s but I believe they went to a museum. Now that SD is going to give the E&LS a run for the money with their 1221 X Reserve Mining SD. Northwestern Pacific was a spin-off from the SP that sadly had problems with fires and tunnel stability on a route to Eureka CA. The BNSF local had some pretty sweet power as that GP60B was built for the Santa Fe and worked high-speed Intermodal. They still have some working locals mostly in California or the Pacific Northwest. The bridge got quite a bit of work as over the last decades it saw quite a bit of coal trains. Interesting catches in Burlington new drone territory

      @paulbergen9114 Yes Paul other than the Citirail unit the L571 was a snoozer. At first I thought it was an NS heritage unit with the yellow nose. Kind of a rough area there around the BJRR. Had a guy ask me what I was doing down there. He said they had some theft problems around there. Definitely want to give that spot another shot and catch the lift bridge in action. A CNW engineer friend of mine said those GP 40s had terrible heaters.

    BNSF 334 is not a slug it is GP60B a B-unit ... fully functional locomotive no cab.

    Thank you for documenting the Canadian National train #L571 on 25 September 2024, , as it traveled through Cedar Falls, Iowa. Is that mystery engine on the front a former Citi Lease unit? Based on the view of the Cedar Falls dam that appears at 0:53, it appears that the tree snags that were along the dam earlier in the summer have been cleared. That was a great tour of the Burlington Junction Railroad's yard in Burlington, Iowa. The former Chicago & North Western GP40 could use a good sandblasting job and an application of fresh paint. The BNSF lift bridge over the Mississippi River is an oddity. Usually, you see railroad swing bridges over the Mississippi. There was an interesting BNSF engine on one of the trains in the yard. Is that a slug, as you mentioned, or is it a "B" unit? It looks like it was a former GP engine to me. (Posted on 5 October 2024 at 1846 CDT.)

      @thomasmackowiak You're welcome Thomas! Yes the city cleared the log jam by the gates. Sounds like that was a b unit. They must be pretty rare. The swing bridge was replaced with the lift bridge because of collision problems.

    Say what? An ex-Citirail, a CSX?!, and a good, old CN unit! Was that you in the boat doing the drone work? HEY❗where did all the water go🤔? Geez! That ex-CNW GP40 sure has seen much better days, poor thing🤔😕😔😤❗and a former ESPEE/NWP SD-7? YES, its an SD-7❗YIKES❗thats an oldie for darn sure❗

      @paulsmith5398 I liked the nose on that Citirail unit. Not much paint left on the CNW. Still could read the herald though👍

    • @paulsmith5398
      @paulsmith5398 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@redsiowatrainvideos6645 when CN acquired those Citirail units, there was some speculation that they might change the nose paint on most, but not all of the current CN units. I gotta admit, that Citirail nose paint does look sharp! That Burlington Junction GP7?/9? Looks like its ready for the torch, not much salvageable left on it. Too bad that CNW GP40 cant find its way to the IRM...........all in all, another great video❗
