  • What Did The “Igbo People” Believe In Before Christianity
Every culture revered some sort of divinity that was fundamental to their existence. They tied cultural practices to their spirituality as a way to relate and interpret the divine.
To Ndi-Igbo, this is called “Omenaani di n’odinaani”, which loosely translates as “Cultural practices that serve as medium to cosmic or spiritual interactions. This cosmic interaction begins with the “Chi”, whom we perceive and interpret as “The aspect of a creator that creates”. This Chi can be found within everything in our natural environment, such as; stones, animals, trees etc, hence why these items are used by the Dibia in diverse mythical activities.
This concept of Chi also exists within deities “Alusi na enwe chi”, hence when we interact with a deity, we are interacting with all of creation that resides within this Alusi.
Because we believe in this Chi concept, it means the Chi also has a creator, which through our actions as it’s living avatar, it strives to reconnect to this creator or this cosmic force. Therefore, we believe in the existence of a creator whom we refer to as “CHI-UKWU” the aggregate of all Chi.
Our interaction with this creator is minimal because we do not fully understand it, but we can relate to other aspects of its existence through our various ancestral or familer spirits we refer to as Ezemezu. Ndi-Igbo also believes that everything within & outside the universe is cosmically related and interjected, hence the prevalence of predestination, soul groups, and reincarnation.
Finally, we do not believe in the concept of Good vs. Evil, rather we believe in the existence of Good & Evil as part of a cosmic whole. Our ancestors believed that this concept is neutral when interacting with humans, this is because our ancestors believed that human beings are the social engineers, that determine if a phenomenon is good or bad through our actions. This eliminates the notion that good is influenced by the creator and evil is influenced by the devil whom we erroneously call Ekwensu.

Thankyou so much for your work sister, much appreciated. I’m a so-called “African American” but the majority of my dna is from east Naija.. I found this out through‘ancestry dna’ and I also had divination done by a yoruba babalawo in Nigeria and he also said my ancestors are from east Nigeria and I never told him about my dna test, he was right 😅
