I actually legitimately enjoy this first film, the sequels are the guilty pleasures for me. I don't like this as a Resident Evil movie, but I really like it as a zombie movie. It's claustrophobic, the zombies (for the most part) look cool, and the main theme by Marilyn Manson gets stuck in my head all the time even today.

@@dixonbutts800 Yeah the sequel was horrendous... I saw it in theaters and couldn't stand it... it's literally only movie I've ever sat and scowled at the entire time 😂 I loved the first one and I love the games, so seeing that was just... torture. 🤣

    • @kandieharrison4055
      @kandieharrison4055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I agree, I LOVED the first movie (I pretend the sequel doesn't exist, lol). I've played the games my entire childhood, up until recently and my favorite monster is the Red Pyramid/ Pyramid Head, so seeing him in the movie literally had me jumping in my seat, giddy as heck, lol. The story changes I think they did an okay job at making it fit, I think they thought it'd be the only Silent Hill film they'd make and so they went all out it. Since Pyramid Head is a fan favorite, they wanted to put him in there, but he doesn't show up until the second game, so they had to find a way to get him and all the iconic monsters in it. I think one of the reasons the sequel sucks so much is because of the fact that they didn't think they'd make a sequel at all. The first one's ending was 100% an ending, it had the feeling of an ending and to me, it would have made more sense to do what the game did and switch between different characters in each movie. Like the first is Rose and Alessa's story, the second could have been James, or Henry, but choosing Heather actually didn't work at all, because of how they wrapped up the ending. Also the actress for Heather, looked nothing like Alessa's actress and the special affects were terrible, especially Dark Heather/Alessa's makeup, but in the first one the makeup was perfection and the FX's were phenomenal. Silent Hill (excluding the sequel, lol) will always be one of my favorite movies of all time and my all time favorite game series of all time.

All the minor cuts and bruises on Milla Jovovich's character are real. No make-up was applied.
Milla Jovovich said the real reason she did this movie was because her brother Marko was a huge fan of the video games.
The presidents of Capcom Japan and America have cameos as zombies. Capcom created the Resident Evil series.
The main actors were told to prepare for the film by getting copies of the games and playing them through. Some of them didn't know if they could complete them in time so they had to get video copies of other people beating the games and then watch it.
(at around 1h 30 mins) There is a shot of Alice's eye close up near the end of the film. This is a direct reference to the first game in the series
Milla Jovovich's character's name, Alice, is only revealed during the credits.
(at around 11 mins) The wedding picture of Alice and Spencer looks similar to the pictures from Resident Evil (1996) and Resident Evil 2 (1998) (with the subjects up close and spliced onto the background image, and always in black and white).
Even though they're everywhere, the word "zombie" is never spoken in this film.
(at around 1h 27 mins) Near the end, when the underground tram pulls back to the Mansion station, the serial number on the front of the lead car reads "ALEXIA" followed by a string of digits. Alexia Ashford is the final antagonist of Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Also, Underground Trams are a recurring mode of transportation in the Resident Evil games.
In the movie, Alice's fake husband is named Spence. This is a reference to the first game which took place in a mansion named the Spencer Estate. Also, one of the three founders of Umbrella Corporation in the game series is named Ozwell Spencer.
The makeup department and crew had a hard time dealing with the dogs, who kept licking the zombie makeup, blood and meat off of themselves.
The studio, Sony Pictures, had hoped at one time to make the film PG-13 so as to make the film more marketable to the younger video game fans, but director Paul W.S Anderson insisted that to be true to the game, the film must be rated R.
Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson, who met on the set of "Resident Evil", were married on 22nd August 2009 and (as of January 2019) have two children.
Like in the games, after something is switched on/off, something else happens elsewhere. When the Red Queen is deactivated for the first time, all doors elsewhere are opened.

One concept I loved about the hive in this movie was how the intro tricked the audience into thinking the hive was an regular office building in a city, with the windows showing buildings outside. Not only was it a trick, but it worked in the lore of the film that the employees, despite being underground, they can at least feel like they are in a normal environment and office building

I still think this is a pretty decent movie. It's easily the best of the Paul Anderson RE movies. I actually really enjoyed how the whole Alice storyline (in this movie) felt like it could have been occurring alongside the events of the first game. The soundtrack also has a lot to do with creating that sense of unease and fear of what lies ahead not at all unlike the early RE games. This is the only one of the movies that I felt somewhat captured the tone of survival horror. Not a great movie by any means, but one that I can still enjoy.

As someone who grew up playing the original RE (and still do on my PlayStation), I enjoyed this movie when it came out. My personal view point was that while this movie is taking place, the events of the first game are happening above in the mansion. With all that being said, I agree with just about all your thoughts on this film (and series) to those of us who love the franchise (games), and most of these films can be enjoyed in their own way.

I enjoyed the first film. I love the scene where the survivors had to crawl on some sort of air vent. Beneath them were countless zombies. Made me really feel worried and scared for the characters

  • @travis_mitchell

As someone who was too terrified to leave the first room in the original game, but watched my uncle play the entire series,
I’ll say these first two films definitely capture the feel of the games, providing a lot of the terror I felt when watching someone else play them.
That frenetic sense of dread and anxiety, clashing with unnerving sections of silence.
The first two have their share of dates effects and the heavy priority of being like the Matrix for some reason, but both provide that claustrophobic, authentic horror that a zombie movie should.
Apocalypse I think is the high point for me, and I’d say Nemesis was executed very well, and even the way it’s tied in to the original film works in service of the story in my opinion.
Basically just watch these two movies, then read the early draft of the Extinction script where LJ lives, pretend the others didn’t happen, and you have a fun little trilogy of hilariously awesome and terrifying action movies.

The main problems with the films is that they're Paul WS Anderson's fanfictions about his wife Milla Jovovich as a badass superhuman passed off as film adaptations of the Resident Evil games.

Maybe later ones, but they met filming the first movie. They didn't actually get married until after Extinction. By that point the movies were highly profitable and the studio was asking for them to make more.

I did not expect this review series, but I should’ve! I’m so excited for all these reviews and the new movie!! My personal fav would be Apocalypse, purely because it’s the most like the game, but the best written would be tied for me with the first movie and Extinction. I always watch every entry except the final chapter, the final chapter is COMPLETE GARBAGE. I also have a personal sweet spot for Afterlife. That one had a lot of potential.

If they simply just made the lead "Alice" character Jill Valentine and build the movie around her character, it would have been a better fit for the movie/franchise. This original RE is still my favorite, but like you I was left disappointed after being such a huge fan of the video game. I'm glad you mentioned the sound track, it's one of the definite pluses for me too. I hope this latest Resident Evil FINALLY gets it right!

A guilty pleasure franchise for me also, the first movie I can tolerate and not be offended because all the characters are original. I wish they did that in the sequels. I like some of the other movies too but I hate seeing the game characters portrayed poorly. If Hollywood wants to adapt games into movies and not follow the actual storyline than at least give us original characters. They can be similar to the ones we love from the games but are still their own character.

I appreciate Resident Evil up until Apocalypse. Just SOMETHING about the first 2 capture that post 90s horror era where sci fi horror was making small returns, you had insane metal soundtracks, gore was returning back post Columbine and 9/11. And Alice, while unrelated to ANY of the games, at least is relevant to the plot as best she can and does act with appropriate intensities.

I have to actually give it to Apcopylse because that felt at least to me the most faithful to the games it literally was Nemesis, in fact I played the 2nd game first because I didn't have the orginal until later, I can see where these movies are a guilty pleasure for me as well, I can't wait for the new one

This movie is fine, I like it for what it is. But I've never played any Resident Evil games so I didn't expect too much nor was I completely disappointed. Being a cinephile primarily horror I agree with your points that it doesn't hit any of it's marks extremely well. Again this is a passable flick for a rainy day.

I genuinely enjoy most of the Resident Evil franchise even if most folks don't. I've never had high expectations for any of these films & therefore had no major disappointments with this franchise. I do think the first one was the very best. The Slipknot track My Plague(New Abuse Mix) is what made me a Slipknot fan. I can appreciate all the criticisms of the quality of the sequels & never take it personally. My score: Gold standard certification rating. To use a Sean Chandlerism, a great Taco Bell movie.

Paul W.S. Anderson needs to stop making live action video game movies because everytime when he makes a live action video game adaptation they all suck and all of the resident evil movies he makes are terrible and the animated films are better

I think most people agree that the first movie is pretty good. Taken on it's own it's easy to fit into the games cannon.
The idea of being trapped underground with zombies and mutated abominations is scary as hell.
It has a great atmosphere with the high-tech, sterile lab contrasted with all the blood, death and gore.
    Amazing soundtrack of course.
And a serviceable blend of action and horror.

If you like the games you have to watch the animated movies cause there part of the video game timeline plus the Netflix Tv show.
