    I just like to say I'm very thankful for footage like this, because these are the type of spiders that would look like ones I encounter around here and freak me out, so this really helps me a lot with my fear! As I mentioned before, I don't wanna be scared of spiders, so I been studying for months now! :)

    This is a beautiful dipiction of your Furrow Orb Weaver! Orb spiders(🕷️), in my estimation, have always been the most beautiful Spiders in the world 💕 from when I first saw them in the backyard as a child!!!

    I’ve been observing one on my porch for the last 14 nights. I enjoy watching her build her web every night and have been researching them more and more. I don’t recall seeing many Furrow Orb Weavers in Delaware before. They’re fun to watch! Was excited when I realized she was egg laden - GRAVID. New word for me. Thanks for sharing the vid! Captions are great too

      i feed the ones on my porch. they enjoy it so much. last night i finally gained the courage to hold it. it ran all over me and when i went to put it down it would NOT get off me so i went into panic but i didn’t want to hurt it so i just sit there next to it’s web and waited for it to get off of me. took around 10-13 minutes.

    This took me back to my first learning about orb weavers! I watched a spider build a 2 foot diameter web on my front porch in the mountains. I was disappointed when in the morning the web was gone. I thought it was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But the next evening she was building a new one. I was so excited! Next came a field guide (before internet), but the most that I learned was from observing her and also spotting others to watch.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter

      Nice spider story! I once stayed up for a few hours in the middle of the night to watch this marvelous web engineering feat as well. Some orb weavers will eat their web for the protein if nothing visits it's web. Then rebuild the web again the next night! Like you said, it is so much fun to just sit back and watch them in action exhibiting their specialized abilities ...

    Great Video! I've got such an infestation of these around my chicken coop right now and they are a pain as they spin their webs right at my head level. I have relocated so many to the woods, but they seem to like the coop area - probably plenty of prey. You have to admire their web work though... it is pretty neat.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for ur comment! You might try some natural methods to shoo spiders without hurting the other domesticated-wildlife! Mix some peppermint essential oil with warm water and spray away. Shouldn't bother the chickens, but you wound know that the best! They don't like ammonia either, but who does! Sprinkle some cedar chips around (but that may get a bit expensive!).Chickens might not like it, but your can also try sprinkling some chewing tobacco (unused) around floor or entry points. Best wishes!!! And yes, they do make some outstanding webs!

    Have you ever thought of taking a huge fish tank and filling it with plants and various spiders? I've been doing that and I've created a miniature ecosystem. Crickets, millipedes, and cockroaches clean the dead plants and carcasses from the tank, while fruit flies are attracted to the fruit that I put in the tank. The fruit flies mate and hatch offspring in the tank, and then they fly into the webs of the spiders to be eaten! It's totally self sustainable and only needs watered every so often. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Awesome video as always my man!

      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Sam, I haven't but that is truly totally awesome! Way to go. I've arranged my small aquarium to be similar to a natural habitat for a spider with some crickets able to breed, but that's about it. Nothing like what you've done.

    When I was young I used to keep, raise and collect various insects and spiders.... Problem is I live in NSW Australia so I would often have Yellow jacket wasps, Red Back and Funnel Web spiders. :) I have no illusions of how stupid it was haha. It is honestly a miracle I never got bit, especially by the red backs. To collect them I would more or less pick of their webs with my fingers turning it into a kind of basket. They easily could have just run over to my fingers and bit them.
      I have insane luck with animals, I once accidentally trod on a sun bathing red belly black snake and it just slid away. Typically they just turn around and bite you.
      I also have some cool photos of me petting a wild red kangaroo joey in its pouch. I honestly have no idea how I am still alive the more I think about it...

    Pretty sweet, how she can change her silk from a single strand for a life-line, to almost a sheet of silk for wrapping.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many spiders have the ability to produce up to seven kinds of silk webbing, each with its own unique purpose. The spinnerets (usually 6) are little finger-like faucets at the end of the abdomen that the spider can turn on and off and mix the needed fluids in the proper combinations and quantity for the task at hand! The spinnerets selected can be finely tuned for one strand or multiple strands. That's why I call them amazing little critters!

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you should keep the eggs (sac) with her. Sometimes after they lay their eggs they are not real hungry for awhile... the larger container would be of help, and be sure to put a few cross twigs in there so she can make a new larger web. Be sure to mist her and the web (after she makes one) with water! They need to drink each day like you and me.

    Bob, I'm so glad you educate people about spiders. Would it possible to do it why leaving them where you found them? The insect population has collapsed and the arachnids are disappearing as well. If they are successfully living somewhere, perhaps it's the best place for them and their babies?

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of the spiders I film I do so at the webs or places they are found. In this video I was asked by the nature center if I would be so kind to remove this spider from their mailbox, which I did. There are times where I will bring a spider home to film as lighting, sound, and close up video work can best be done at my home. Almost all are returned to a "marked" web from which they were taken from a prairie and after filming are returned to their webs which are not destroyed in the capture. I understand what you are saying and I do my best to preserve and protect all nature I encounter. I have asked local parks and preserves to not mow down all the fields as in doing so, the habitat of critters is destroyed and as in one local case hundreds of spiders that once were, were completely wiped out and their egg sacs as well. After educating the park services and maintenance folks it took three years before the spider populations were restored. And all the animals, from insects, to birds, to spiders were all affected in a domino effect. Anyway, now I ramble. Almost all baby spiderlings that have hatched at my home have been well cared for and brought back to their home of origin and released. But I do appreciate your concern and suggestion. Thx for your comment.

    • @monah5532
      @monah5532 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BobTheSpiderHunter Thank you for taking the time to explain. We also have an increasingly widely adopted "no mow May" here to give creatures a fightimg chance in spring, and years ago I turned my useless, sterile, water-hogging lawn into a meadow with local wildflowers. It was a constant fight with the city at first but now my neighbours are also adopting. Thank you again for the videos.

    I live in Richmond, British Columbia Canada, and I have to say I am absolutly terrified of spiders! But there have been a whole lot of these spiders around my house this fall. I dont know if these spiders only come out when it cools down from summer to fall, but I havent noticed these little guys until now. I have a hard time sleeping and am up all night and go out for several ciggarettes a night and have been just so curious and completley amazed by these spiders!! The way they build their web and how fast they catch their food just everything they do is just so amazing to me.
    I do have a really great question, if they suck their food dry then what do they do with the rest of the stuff?? I have this one that looks a lot larger then the others and he/she usually makes her nest from scratch every night and their webs are always clean of anything!! Also I have another large one on my upstairs patio that always comes out and makes her nest a rather large nest right by the light on the wall, but I havent seen her in a couple days and then noticed her last night poking out a little from under the railing but she didnt make her nest at all last night??!! Is she ok?? I mean dont they have to eat every night??

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda! Thx for watching and leaving me a comment. These orb weavers (almost all of them) are getting ready to lay their egg sacs for spiderlings to be born in the spring. What you are seeing is the females (males are long gone by now). You see them in the fall as they are "plumping" up if you will. It is a very strenuous activity to lay their eggs and build an egg sac around them. It takes LOTS of protein, and this is why she is out there eating as much as she can for this one last final act of preserving her offspring before she dies. Sometimes they will lay low because of a cooler temperature or they have eaten enough and are just waiting to lay their eggs. Their eye sight is bad so they are smart enough to know the light attracts insects to its web and also provides some warmth, thus many will make their web-nest (sleeping sac) near the light. Most orb-weavers will eat their web (full of protein) and then build a new one the next day. Hope some of this helps!

I've had arachnophobia since I was little but I've watched her spin her web so now I'm fascinated and shes helping me conquer my fear! Anyways, I was wondering, when she eats the prey she must eat the silk too, right? So is the silk reused after she eats it?

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cassie, thx for watching and for asking a very good question regarding orb-weavers! First, I'm glad you have been closely watching an orb weaver at work which is helping over come your fear. They are most fascinating to watch weave their web, especially when you consider they are basically blind! The spider will ingest the prey's "juices" after the injected enzymes break down the inside of the prey. Most spiders can not chew or eat solids. They have a "sucking" stomach tube that drinks up the liquid leaving an empty shell of it's pray behind. Webbing is not eaten at this time. It takes a lot of protein for a spider to produce webbing, so some spiders will eat their orb web at night and remake a new one before morning, thus not wasting the protein contained in the web. Hope that helps!

    1:30 I have to disagree, a lot of spider species require almost no care at all, I have kept spider of the genus Steatoda which are basically cobweb spiders, and they can live in a slightly ventilated jar with no food or water for more than a year! also some of my desert tarantula species like to fast(not eat) sometimes for about 6 to 14 months, and there is nothing to maintain in that time, the spider barely moves, does not eat, and i have only seen her drink one time.
    Honestly the only pet that i can think of that requires less care than these spiders is a pet rock.

      Orb weavers are a considerably different spider than cobweb spiders or tarantulas. One is they grow fast and use a lot of resources nightly. They can eat their weight in insects every night and get a lot of water from morning dew on webs, the they do need more care in captivity. A year in captivity is about their best life expectancy and few will overwinter in diapause.

      Well said, you are correct there are other spiders that need less care or intervention, but you must understand I was generalizing. I have seen too many people get a pet "whatever" and not know how to care for it properly, or decide they are no longer interested in it, and the animal ends up suffering or paying the price. This happens more than I care to think about when we take animals into our habitat as "pets" with little regard or care for their well being.

      Yeah I understand what you were trying to say, you are right. I just find it fascinating how some spider can survive for so long on so little. Also cobweb spider reproduce like crazy when you feed them regularly but i haven't seen them mate, could it be that some can reproduce by parthenogenesis? Because i can't find any info about this in spiders aside from Triaeris stenaspis.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can remember one time a Tarantula I had didn't eat for two months and I was so sure she would die! She didn't but I almost did! lol Thanks for pointing out the partenogenetic Triaeris stenaspis. Didn't know much about this spider so had to check it out, but I doubt that cobweb spiders function like this...I could be wrong though. Won't be the first time nor last time! lol

      Treat it kindly, it rids you of many nasty and potentially dangerous insects (like disease carrying mosquitoes for a start!). If you don't want her in your house just move her outdoors.

      Best way to handle them is to have a paper and glass... Don't toss them out like a rat or scorpion, but move them to a safe area where they can rebuild their home without being disturbed. Lessens the stress, and keeps them from being agitated and less likely to die.

    Hey bob.I found a spider in our grandparents' house. It is a little fat and just almost a half an inch.And i found it with like 30 slings, I put the spider in a small sharpener with a little box in it. I put some cottin with water to make her hydrated.Then put 2 Cellar spiders 2 days After I caught her. She is alive and well. But the question is..I dont know what type of spider she is. she's an orb weaver, And is yellow and brownish color. She doesn't have stripes too. she has a black circle shape in her belly. And is fast and harmless. Do you know what type of orb weaver/ spider it is?

    • @ItsmeEyan
      @ItsmeEyan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And also there is NO egg sac.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eyan, how do you know she is an orb weaver? Did you see her orb web? The babies are likely a week old or older as hundreds of babies usually come from an egg sac and you saw just some of her spiderlings. Hard to ID without a picture though. First we must determine she is in fact an orb weaver and not a ground spider.

    Great backlighted view of silk preening! In Tallahassee a few years ago we saw a brightly colored and and dangerous-looking spider making a web that looked like skywriting. It was a "writing spider" Argiope aurantia.

    • @BobTheSpiderHunter
      @BobTheSpiderHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of my favorites! I tell people with a little imagination you can look at the black pattern on the spiders yellow and black abdomen and see an alien creature with big eyes and it's hands on it's hips! lol Certainly not a dangerous spider. I used to catch them when I started my spider interest at 9 years old. This was the only bite I ever received from a spider, and it was all my fault! I have handled thousands of spiders... Some areas call this spider the "writing spider" and I guess that's because of the thicker stabilimentum it makes. If you lived in Kentucky, you most likely called it the "banana" spider. And others call it the Golden Garden, or black and yellow orb weaver. Whatever you call it, it's one fine spider! If you haven't already seen the vid on my hunting some Argiopes, you might enjoy it! Good question, but I don't let the babies into my house, and even if some did get in my house they would make their way to the outdoors all by themselves for survival purposes.
