    I ran a Viking 46' in 1984 and met Bill and Pat at the boat shows and the factory during the build. Prior to this boat, my favorites were Bertrams, seaworthy, dry and fast. Viking was making great forward strides at this time and I was impressed with the clean routing of all electrical wiring and the dedicated stringer engine mounts for the DD 6V-92s. The exterior lines had improved greatly as had the interiors and joinery work. The boat was built solid, a little heavy at 44,000 lbs. Through-hull mounted stern cleats were an example.
    I remember looking at Ocean Yachts for laughs, as we called them "flexible flyers" as the bow pulpit would vibrate and flex at sea. They also had bolted their stern cleats to a cockpit side storage locker without backing plates.
    I grew to love that Viking and am totally impressed with the continued progress they've made every year following. They've gone from middle of the pack to the leading production convertible & sport fishing boat on the water.
    The designs & engineering of today's boats emphasize Viking's philosophy of "Building a better boat every day".
    Any chance I have of seeing these yachts doing what they're designed to do, I delve into. Great video! Thank you for posting!

    i have a what is probably a really dumb question, but with these boats having , what seems such a low backend, how are they in really rough waves. Is it possible for them to get swamped and take on lots of water from the rear. These boats have become my favorite on the water after viewing tons but have always wondered that .

    • @davidbayles6494
      @davidbayles6494 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have the power to maintain speed through following seas, which might pose an issue of getting swamped, but the cockpits are designed to drain quickly. Backing down on a fish can also put water in the cockpit. Otherwise, they handle like champs. Big engines, good throttle response and planing hulls make the difference.

    • @johnmccall2044
      @johnmccall2044 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are designed to shed water quickly when backing down hard on a big fish. No issues swamping.

    These large sports fishers seem to really ride high at the bow with minimal stern freeboard, how are they to helm, they look quite cumbersome?

    • @davidbayles6494
      @davidbayles6494 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low freeboard in the stern for fighting fish.

    Radar is not required on vessels under 1600 GT (33 CFR 164.35), however, Rule 7 states that .
    In other words, whoever has one must use it. The Navigation Rules are
    not meant to discourage the use of any device, rather they expect
    prudent mariners to avail themselves of (Rule 5),
    e.g. the use of radar. At issue is whether the use of radar is
    appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and that is a determination
    made by the Master; and, ultimately decided by a trier of fact.
    Should you be in a collision how would a judge/jury rule on your
    contention that the use of radar was impracticable (due to electrical
    drain, crew shortages, etc.)? Also, if a collision does occur, then
    there was obviously a beforehand. Could the
    determination of that risk have been made sooner with the use of radar?
    It is difficult to answer such questions because the circumstances of
    each case are different.
