    Just to further argue against "big displacement numbers scary", my last car was a Subaru STI, with the infamous 2.5L 4-cylinder, and it could barely manage 24mpg on a good day if I really tried hard to hypermile it. I traded that in for a Camaro with that same 6.2L V8 you mentioned (yes, I know it's tuned differently than the Corvette version). Despite being more than double the displacement size and 150 HP more, it easily gets 30mpg without really trying.
    I really wish we could unify vehicle emissions laws and base them entirely around a vehicle's weight, and eliminate stupid "chicken tax" type import laws.

    What most people don't understand about the emissions era in the mid 70s on up is a lot of those cars would only require minimal work to achieve acceptable power numbers, the trans am from 1975-1981 is a perfect example of that Pontiac kept it going as long as they could, also you have to understand lead was taken out of gas and you need the lead to lubricate the valves on the high performance motors from the 60s and early 70s, so the later cylinder heads are not required to run leaded fuel making them better for street use today, however over 50 years aftermarket companies have been innovating and producing modern cylinder heads (also everything else) that are leagues ahead of what was made back then

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      you've been told some misinformation in that mix. the need for lead to lubricate valves was WAY exaggerated by the people who didn't understand that it was detuning that reduced performance, not emissions equipment. lead was always just a cheap anti knock additive first, and a lubricant, second.

      I think the biggest bit that people miss is the switch from SAE gross to SAE net horsepower. Some 25% of an engines rated horsepower vanished overnight, and when you add in 3:1 axles for bandaid overdrive, you've got a recipe for rose tinted glasses. Nostalgiacs can't help but to point fingers when they compare cherry picked 400+ ghp homologation monsters to run of the mill v8s now making half what they "used to".

    • @alexjenner1108
      @alexjenner1108 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When they removed the lead, you couldn't get the same hi octane rated fuel, so the compression ratios came down. Plus high compression engines tend to produce more oxides of nitrogen (NOx), responsible for acid rain and other fun stuff, so compression ratios came down for those reasons too. With modern lead free high octane rated fuel, and electronic engine management we are back to high compression, high output engines again.

      @@hatch450sx3 People always throw out the “with stock heads/cams” with the Coyote. People also don’t realize that the stock cams are considerably larger than a LS, especially for its displacement. Plus, it’s not like the Coyote heads outflow the typical L92/LS3 heads. Stock v stock, they flow similar… around 315-320 CFM. The main thing is that the Coyote has that flow on a considerably smaller engine. Combine the equal flow with bigger cam lobes on a smaller engine, you get something that doesn’t make as much torque (considerably less down low) but can match the HP by revving higher.
      There’s also the cost factor to consider. A set of Coyote cams cost as much as getting LS heads CNC ported (where they can flow more than Coyote heads). A LS cam can cost as little as $200 for a drop in NSR cam that can pick up 40+ hp alone (tuned stock vs tuned cammed). The irony is that many of these “small” NSR cams have similar duration to a Coyote… 210-212 @ 0.050” duration. And with it a LS ends up making peak HP around 6500 and easily revs to 7k.
      I’m not knocking the Coyote. It’s potent AF and a damn good engine. My point is that the LS is extremely mild from the factory, has good heads, and extremely capable.

    The 1970s US engine issue was caused by the banning of using leaded gasoline. The EPA thought the technology existed and pushed the regulations through and the automakers scrambled to meet the demand. The removal of the lead additive significantly lowered the octane of the fuel, which required the detuning Bladed mentioned so that the detonation didn't destroy the engine.

    • @stlchucko
      @stlchucko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The drop in compression and timing advance did lower power, but not nearly as much as emissions limits did. Rule of thumb is about 2-4% per point of compression. The leaded gas ban reduced octane, so higher compressions couldn’t be used.
      Prime example of this is the 1970 vs 1971 LT1 350. In 1970, it was 11:1 compression and rated at 350hp. In 1971, it was virtually the same except reduced compression to 9:1, and rated at 330hp… roughly a 6% decrease for 2 points of compression.
      Where the big power drops come is when they had to go with smaller cam to meet emissions standards that came in 1973. Gone were the big solid lifter cams and high revs, and out came the small hydraulic flat tappets to meet emissions. The 1972 LT1 (same as the 1971) was SAE net rated at 255hp (prior years were SAE gross rated). The performance engine that replaced it in 1973 was the L82 was rated at 205hp with the same 9:1 compression… a 20+% drop in power.
      Yes, the leaded gas ban had a noticeable effect on power, but the tailpipe emissions standards had a much greater effect.

    • @andrewolson5471
      @andrewolson5471 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@stlchucko you're not wrong, however it's important to note that both things went together. The tailpipe emissions requirement necessitated the catalytic converter, and the lead additive would destroy the cat. So besides being toxic to all life forms, there's a second reason to ban it. The problem was that without the lead, the octane rating of the fuel dropped significantly, which is why compression had to drop. High compression and low octane gas means you get detonation, and I'm sure you know what that does to the innards of the engine.

    • @stlchucko
      @stlchucko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@andrewolson5471 Right. My point is that the other things required to meet emissions standards did more in reducing power.
      Even if it didn't destroy cats, unleaded gas still would have been banned, just like leaded paint for consumers in the 70s. The fact that it does destroy cats, it made sense that the mandatory leaded ban/cats required laws happened simultaneously.

    V6s can make good power, it was just that in the past, they were also, like most engines restricted in terms of power and performance, both in America, Europe and Asia.
    Like a 3 liter v6 in a Mitusbishi could make around 130-140 hp in the early 1990s for example, so it wasen`t just in America the engines were choked sadly.
    In America of course, we had the very stringent emissions and fuel consumption rules of the 70:s and 80:s which pretty much killed the power of most engines, from small 4 cylinders to big v8s, but as all that was relieved, and tech advanced power figures did go up, both for v6s and v8s, and todays v6s are alot more powerful than they ever been so.
    Here in Europe, emissions, high fuel costs and displacement costs in some countrys, like Italy, where cars, whit engines bigger than 2 liters were hit with higher taxes, that`s why many makes, made special 2 liter version for the Italian market.
    France also had high taxes on bigger engines, which like Italy lead to a big market for small engines in many European countrys, although here in Sweden, big cars and engines were often the norm, often around 2 liters and above.
    In Japan, there was an agreement that cars made in Japan could not have more than 280 hp, there is no doubt that the inline 6.s in the R32,R33 and R34 Skyline GTR and MK4 Supra could have made alot more power than they did, which tuners have shown over and over again, these engines had great potential and still do.
    Same is true for the first gen Honda NSX, whit it`s naturally aspirated 3 liter and later 3.2 liter v6, which is still regarded as one of the best sounding road going v6s engines you could find, that sound at 8000 rpm, was awesome.
    Some other great sounding v6s for me would be the Alfa Romeo Busso V6 engine, which was in production between 1979 and 2005, it is also regarded as one of the best, if not the best sounding road going v6 ever made, it was just sad that Alfa pulled out of America, since that engine could really sing for a whole concert hall, it also had chromed inlet pipes in it`s transversly mounted fwd form in the 90s and early 2000:s.
    Also the supercharged Toyota based V6 Lotus is using many of their cars now, sounds just fantastic aswell :)
    Also Fords 2.5 and 3 liter Duratec v6s are also a favorite of mine, especially the 2.5, not the most powerful, but the sound was just great :)
    It`s just sad that the turbo v6s of today don`t produce that same interesting sound sadly.

    2 word : CAFE Standard !
    Manufacturers who made more large trucks would have been allowed to meet a lower overall CAFE target, manufacturers who make more small trucks would have needed to meet a higher standard.
    What I'm saying is cars, sport cars and even Hyper cars downsize engines because they are smaller than trucks and must conform to stricter fuel/emission standards

    To balance an engine, you have to consider rotational balance (720/whatever number of pistons) but also linear balance (the inertia of the pistons going up and down). And also the imbalance between the 2 sides of the engine (you want your pistons on each side of a boxer, for example, to conteract their inetia). The fact that you have to consider all of them makes it very difficult to balance an I7 engine, for example. Furthermore, manufacturers don't like to waste money, so when they develop an i4, they can put 2 together and get a V8, or with an i3, you can get a V6 and V12. But an i7 is a nightmare to balance, and where would you fit a V14 ? Thanks if you read through all of this ❤

      Does that give slightly better fuel economy to the US V8s, out of curiosity? It sounds to me like that means more acceleration is available for a given power rating, so at standard driving speeds, I would _assume_ that means less fuel needs to be burned per minute to maintain cruising speed

    The hilarious thing about talking about engine balancing is none of us are the ones who are gonna have to balance an engine.
    Oh gosh, the displacement argument. So like, the best thermal efficiency for an i4 is a slightly tall 2 liter (at least for NA, I'm not sure about once you put a turbo on it). The increased weight compared to a smaller engine is easily compensated for by that efficiency boost. Of course, because my car was made before this was figured out fully, it has a 1.3 liter to be super efficient. It's great almost always, but when it's well below freezing, this poor bean can't make enough to heat to keep itself at operating temperature.

      @LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious The thing about the U.S. market, is that we like performance cars. Back in the sixties, all the U.S. brands would have a 4.9 liter or less inline six, sub 200 horsepower. Or you could get upwards of 400 horsepower from a V8 option. That sort of standard spilled over through the seventies, and into the eighties. Around 1987, Buick made a turbocharged V6 that could propel faster than any 60's production V8, but the sentiment of the V8 still holds in our minds.

    Something that needs to be said about displacement is that it’s relative. Cylinders with long strokes(like the ones in American V8s) have huge displacement but also huge compression. It’s a fundamentally different type of displacement than just making a bigger cylinder to burn more gas at the same compression(another way to get power)
