In my opinion, when the CEO of any organization uses fancy words to describe something, but can't explain it in simple language, that's a huge red flag.
I used to be an engineer for a multinational company and we always used to joke that the number of buzzwords used by management was inversely proportional to their competence. Catch is, boomer hedge fund managers and other rando investors love hearing a CEO say buzzwords.

In all honestly, it's Ford's own fault. When was the last time you saw an advertisement for any Ford product other than a truck? It's amazing that Honda, Nissan and Toyota can be sold in the United States, but Ford cannot find a way to sell cars here. Maybe they should "focus" on improving quality, updating ideas on what the American car buyer wants, and ADVERTISE. When my car was being fixed, I had a Ford Fusion as a loaner, and I really liked it, I would have considered it as a future purchase. I loved the Focus ST/R models, they were an alternative to someone who wanted a "hot rod" but also wanted to bring along a friend or two, after all... the back seat of a Mustang is ludicris.
Don't forget they failed to change the looks of the focus for yeeears. Why would anyone want to upgrade if it looked the same except a change to the front fascia?
I know right. If you look inside a Toyota Camry the thing looks like a spaceship. The inside looks awesome. The inside of a Taurus is sad. It looks like a cheap police car, and it runs like one too.
your mistake on some of what you said. the F series is the best selling truck for over 25 years. they sell more F series then tacoma, tundra and titan combined. dont even start with Silverado. and ford leads in technology. it use to be alot of the European cars but that has changed over the past 5 years. it bounces back and forth. Toyota actyally copys alot of what the f150 has standard compared to tundra.

@@taskforceknight9336 the Ford Mondeo is barely in the same class as the Audi A4 and Mercedes C Class. The Mondeo comes in alongside the Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat, Mazda 6 and Peugeot 506... Which it can't compete against. The Ford Focus and Fiesta are top cars in Europe while the Mondeo (fusion) and Kuga (are bottom of the barrel.
@Snow Wolf the fusion sport is a great car but it isn't sold here. However the Fusion struggles to compete with the Accord and the Camry, now imagine throwing a Skoda Superb into the US, the Fusion would be slaughtered.
in England they're still producing the ST. In the US a 5 year old RS with 70k miles sells for a %10 markup. If you can even find one in good shape with original parts which is rare. Ford US took a huge L. The RS was definitely the top hatch.
I'm guessing this video only applies to America? In the UK we're flooded with Focus and Fiesta models. I've just had a letter from Ford advertising the new focus ST. Americans buy more trucks so they sell trucks there. UK buys more hatchbacks so the Focus and Fiesta are sold here by the bucket load
We do buy SUVs in Europe. Just that smaller cars are still very popular. While we’re at that, the new focus is not small at all. It’s essentially a crossover with lower suspension.
Also the 6 speed dual clutch automatic that they used in the last generation of focus and Fiestas were garbage and known to fail at like 10k miles (16000 km in communist units). Manuals are way more popular in other parts of the world.
At this point in time, it's mainly just a whole new car with the "shell" of the actual Ford because if you see a feista in rally, you'd think the actual car itself is sporty

Gornemant it’s not that they are poor quality it’s the fact that Japanese companies do just about everything else cheaper and Arguably better. Besides cars like the fiesta and focus are not what people in at least the U.S. want. Most of us prefer American Muscle, Trucks, and SUVs over hatchbacks especially when the 3 best hatches ford made (Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS) cost just as much if not more than a high spec Mustang GT. I always agreed with this move because Ford actually knows the North American Market.
They are smart to adapt to their markets. UK buyers don't want/need trucks or muscle cars. They want/need small commuters for the geography of UK/Europe. They won't stay in business if they make cars people don't buy,

Not really. If it's reliable and has low maintenance like the Cvpi people would flock to buy them. Mainly as this video states because these small cars suck and dont last long. I'm sure they would see a boom. Maybe should not fully produce it. Limited run to start. Let's say a million. See how it goes then keep production reasonable. That's why they fail. Products cost money to make and not everyone can afford a new car every year or two. So still producing cars while not selling the 6 million not sold and sitting is losing money. Hell they should have regulated production while we bailed them out that year. Limit to a new year model every 5 years and maybe 2 million of each car....idk I'm bored talking now.

I am a huge ford fan and this makes me very sad but the fiesta and focus are not dead in Europe so as a British person the only thing I loose is the mondeo which isn’t too bad

Most of Ford Focus or Fiesta are not sedans but hatchbacks :) Ford is deleting the Fiesta and Focus sedan ... as they are not selling. In Europe in most countries you can't buy a Fiesta sedan f.e. Focus sedan is not selling well too. Just hatchbacks and estate. There is even a smaller Ford hatchback called KA made in cooperation with FiatChrysler :)
SUVs are only popular because of the CAFE and safety regulations from the government. Americans historically have disliked small vehicles outside of the brief periods of gas crisis, but with the way oil prices have been for the last decade (thanks to America now being the number one oil producer) that isn't an issue anymore. Wanna sell more sedans? Make them big again.

It's also regulation based. When regulations (safety, whatever that is) demand smaller and smaller greenhouse, higher and higher door panels, higher and higher beltlines, people keep losing visibility from the inside. One of the worst offenders is the Camaro, for example. So people wanna see out, they wanna sit up high. The only way to achieve that is to sit up above the beltline, which is the total opposite of performance no matter which way you cut it. The further away you get from the wheels, the worse that balance and stability get.

Alinea Euros: Why would Ford make better cars for the US? They can just keep falling back on the F series. (Chevy/GM and Dodge/Chrysler don't have trucks to fallback on as much as Ford, so they keep a diverse lineup of cars and SUV's to remain competitive in the domestic space) That's the problem that started this trend for us Americans; Trucks aren't considered the same for regulation and taxing purposes; so it's cheaper to build and sell luxury trucks in the domestic market. The domino effect is that now that's all Americans as a whole expect from the domestic brands; Big fucking trucks packed to the nines with Luxury features.
The biggest issue against a normal car in America right now is just the fact that for some stupid reason, people seem to think that big SUV's and trucks are safer. That has a really large part to do with it. I have actually been asking a lot of people I know why they ALL drive SUV's and literally all of them said that the larger stature makes them feel safer. They didn't really care about the number of seats, the storage room, the off road capability (if theirs had any), the size or power of the engine... none of that. They slightly cared about fuel mileage, but with modern engines able to somehow haul these behemoths and still get decent gas mileage, that only helped persuade them. Meanwhile... here I am daily driving a sports car because (in my eyes) active safety is much better than passive safety any day. I can help myself out of accidents with the handling ability of my car and think nothing of it. We need to figure out how to quell this false idolization of "big car is safe car" mentality before we can get cool stuff back.
The real thing is, those unnecessary crossovers and the like are safe, but the thing is so are cars. All they do by choosing to drive big trucks and crossovers they don't need, is endangering the people who were reasonable enough to drive a car instead of another box. Their sense of "ride height" is what makes them think they're above the other "plebs in cars". One of my cars is a Z06, and I think about this every time I drive it. Stupid assholes in these oversized hatchbacks on stilts texting on their phone are such a hazard. God help me if one of their dumbasses ever hit me, I'd probably die and they'd walk away. Entirely no need for those shitty things, they only got pushed because manufacturers could make them cheap and rake in lots of profit and convinced everyone they needed this. Somehow people got by for many many years with sedans and wagons...god forbid. Now if you even THINK you MIGHT one day have a child, better go ahead and get a big box to cart them around in...
Shows a lack of insight. Living in some imaginary world that only they drive the big SUV. They forget the SUV can't take corners like a regular sedan, and will more likely roll over. And the other vehicle in their crash will be the same vehicle type anyway.
I had the discussion with my mother in law. She insisted that she wanted a small SUV as the replacement for her 2001 Camry (which just joined the 300k mile club, so well done on that Toyota). She was all "Well I want to be able to see, and the SUVs are safer and they have AWD and are better equipped (blah blah blah). Long story short, shes unhappy that her brand new CR-V rides like shit, and gets worse fuel mileage, and has so little feedback from the steering that its scary to drive on the highway.

Explains why BMW 1M and more recently 135i models are appreciating insanely fast despite them being only 10 years old at the moment. If a hatch is a used hatch, good news. If a hatch becomes a classic, then it goes out of your reach most of the time. Unfortunately due to incredibly low sales and high desirability in the future for those hot hatches, I suspect these will be prohibitely expensive in the future, up to a point where a guy might get his car crushed as his Focus RS was smuggled from Great Britain as the vehicle in question would be too expensive to own stateside.

As someone with a degree in economics and business, this is typical, stupid, American, corporate knee jerk response. First of all, not everyone wants an egg shaped mini crossover. Not everyone wants an electric self driving bubble. Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords, and Nissan Altimas are still selling right? So it's not that people don't want 4 door sedans, they just don't want YOURS. At least, for god's sake, keep one. Keep the Fusion and that's it.
@@jordanbrulez717 electric cars offer little to no environmental advantage over petrol engines, especially when you compare them to ridiculously efficient engines like mazdas. Takes around 300000km for the ev to compensate its carbon footprint comared to the mazda. And thats asuming the battery lasts 300000km, which it wont, you can expect a lifespan of roughly 200000km before you need replacement. So in actuality Evs are more harmful than efficient ICEs. Its only when you compare EVs to the average, which includes 20-30 year old 5l trucks that evs show favourable environmental strain. Hydrogen is a truly clean fuel source. At least much more so than electricity. Its also much more suitable for use in a car and not based upon a limited resource like evs are. Its just not trendy at the moment. Give it a decade or two and hydrogen will begin taking over like evs are today, due to its merit as the superior fuel.

The Focus and Fiesta will continue to be built in Europe for sure. Ford cannot leave the European market and big trucks like the F-150 simply don't sell in Europe because they're impractical here.

The public has this ill conceived notion that crossovers are more roomy, and more capable in offroad scenarios, but if you look at interior volume of midsized sedans compared to crossovers, they're pretty close. You'll usually get better gas mileage out of a car as well. However, Ford is in the business of making money. They're just making changes based on the market. If people want SUV's, then they should tailor their business to fill that need. They are also seeing the writing on the wall as far as ride sharing is concerned. I think of all the changes being made to car tech, the most impactful will be ride sharing. One day owning your own car will be not that common. I hate it, but you'd be blind to think otherwise.

Ford has killed off to many cars in the past 60 years. The fairlane, Torino, bronco, CROWN VICTORIA, thunderbird, country squire, tempo, just to name a few. It’s really sad to see all of fords great cars die off while non-car people buy boring economic vehicles.
Well actually, the origin of the Falcon was the American compact race that had the big 3 debut their first "compact" cars for the 1960 model year. A growing second car family culture and the 1958 recession fueled the need for lighter, less expensive, and easier to maintain cars. Ford's runaway success in this new market was the Falcon, which Ford Australia also received. After the 1966 model year (or somewhere are there) Ford Australia took it and ran with it, developing it for their own needs and wants. The original Falcon survived in the US as it's original economy car purpose until 1969.

I've only owned Honda's and Toyotas. Why? Because they're reliable, require the least in maintenance over a ten year period (how long I typically keep a car), and are long lasting. No way I'd buy American.
Police departments, rental car companies, corporations, and various federal agencies all used to buy fleets of dozens, hundreds, even thousands of Ford cars. As for the police, Dodge has encroached on a huge portion of that market (with the cooler looking Charger), and I see cops rolling around in Explorer SUVs a lot now.

The chargers are made for HWP units (Highway Patrol) and the explorers made for smaller areas, they are both very useful and have their pros and cons which equal out
They're not going away they're still building cars in other countries and will be able to start up production here if the market dictates it. Additionally, they have the best selling vehicle in the country: the F-150.
I cried when dodge made the mistake of closing the Viper production. The fact of the matter is that this new generation is not into cars. They would rather sit on their butts and be unproductive. The manual transmission may as well be considered a anti-theft device...

The new F150s are the size of a small yacht and they’ve made better power, torque, and fuel economy than ever before! With engines like that, it makes sense to buy a truck of SUV that makes the same mileage as a sedan or wagon. I mean, you can drive 600 miles on a single tank of gas...IN AN F150!! It’s absurd!! But awesome.

SmuffyGT I agree, but you have to admit it is a considerable step in the right direction. With a 36 gallon tank, you can drive from west Michigan all the way to middle Tennessee (about 600mi) on one tank of gas, and still have some left over for the ride back. That’s pretty damn good for a truck that’s basically a a large box on wheels lol.

People that love the Crown Vic love them so much. But there are not many of you Crown Vic lovers left. Same goes for the Lincoln Town Car of which I am a fanatic fan. I bought one in pristine condition one private owner with a perfect interior for $3,000. Loved it. Bought it in June 2019 and in Jan 2020 I got hit by a Ford F-350. Probably why I only suffered muscle fatigue after that accident and nothing serious is because those Town Cars are safe and big. So after that I could not find another in that kind of shape in time to have something to drive back and forth to work on. Now I'm driving something I like but not in a fan club over. The nice ones are hard to find. But you know they go for peanuts because most people consider those old people cars and the younger people keep entering into the driving pool. Young folks won't even see those cars on the road. Practically they are invisible to the kid that wants a push button start vehicle with Bluetooth technology. Times have changed and we'll never see these Crown Vics return. You might see Jesus return soon though.

Yep. Trucks and crossovers or nothing. People fail to realize Hatchbacks and Wagons are just as practical and buy the crossovers anyway. In fact the current only wagon sold by a U.S. automaker (the one Opel rebadged as a Buick) is even being marketed as a Crossover and is receiving tacky looking body mouldings to give it more of a Crossover-like appearance. Nobody thought they'd live to see the day where you have to make a car uglier to make people want it.
My wife wants a crossover because it easier to get children in and out than a sedan. I'm gonna guess alot more people think this way as well. To me a crossover is just a car with higher center of gravity which takes away the fun from a car, and since they're based on cars they cant offroad which takes the fun out of having an SUV. God theyre so boring.

Even here in my little town of Somerset West, South Africa we are seeing the effect of trucks ("bakkies" or "buck-keys" which is tray or container in Afrikaans) mostly the Ranger dominanting the roads here with older Ford models and the occasional Frat Matt in an ST. And yeah like your other episodes on the popularity of SUVs it all makes great sense. And cudos to Ford for knowing their strengths but the obvious bummer is the loss of some sick models.

In all honestly, it's Ford's own fault. When was the last time you saw an advertisement for any Ford product other than a truck? It's amazing that Honda, Nissan and Toyota can be sold in the United States, but Ford cannot find a way to sell cars here. Maybe they should "focus" on improving quality, updating ideas on what the American car buyer wants, and ADVERTISE. When my car was being fixed, I had a Ford Fusion as a loaner, and I really liked it, I would have considered it as a future purchase. I loved the Focus ST/R models, they were an alternative to someone who wanted a "hot rod" but also wanted to bring along a friend or two, after all... the back seat of a Mustang is ludicris.
Don't forget they failed to change the looks of the focus for yeeears. Why would anyone want to upgrade if it looked the same except a change to the front fascia?

your mistake on some of what you said. the F series is the best selling truck for over 25 years. they sell more F series then tacoma, tundra and titan combined. dont even start with Silverado. and ford leads in technology. it use to be alot of the European cars but that has changed over the past 5 years. it bounces back and forth. in England they're still producing the ST. In the US a 5 year old RS with 70k miles sells for a %10 markup. If you can even find one in good shape with original parts which is rare. Ford US took a huge L. The RS was definitely the top hatch.

Besides cars like the fiesta and focus are not what people in at least the U.S. want. Most of us prefer American Muscle, Trucks, and SUVs over hatchbacks especially when the 3 best hatches ford made (Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS) cost just as much if not more than a high spec Mustang GT. I always agreed with this move because Ford actually knows the North American Market.

Focus sedan is not selling well too. Just hatchbacks and estate. There is even a smaller Ford hatchback called KA made in cooperation with FiatChrysler :)

I drive a F350, and the first thing I noticed when I got in was the room.
It's also regulation based. When regulations (safety, whatever that is) demand smaller and smaller greenhouse, higher and higher door panels, higher and higher beltlines, people keep losing visibility from the inside. One of the worst offenders is the Camaro, for example.
So people wanna see out, they wanna sit up high. The only way to achieve that is to sit up above the beltline, which is the total opposite of performance no matter which way you cut it. The further away you get from the wheels, the worse that balance and stability get.
And why are cars blamed for "not being as safe" when the problem wasn't the car, the problem is the 3-ton behemoth putting everyone else in danger?

That's the problem that started this trend for us Americans; Trucks aren't considered the same for regulation and taxing purposes; so it's cheaper to build and sell luxury trucks in the domestic market. The biggest issue against a normal car in America right now is just the fact that for some stupid reason, people seem to think that big SUV's and trucks are safer. That has a really large part to do with it. I have actually been asking a lot of people I know why they ALL drive SUV's and literally all of them said that the larger stature makes them feel safer. They didn't really care about the number of seats, the storage room, the off road capability (if theirs had any), the size or power of the engine... none of that. They slightly cared about fuel mileage, but with modern engines able to somehow haul these behemoths and still get decent gas mileage, that only helped persuade them.
Meanwhile... here I am daily driving a sports car because (in my eyes) active safety is much better than passive safety any day. I can help myself out of accidents with the handling ability of my car and think nothing of it. We need to figure out how to quell this false idolization of "big car is safe car" mentality before we can get cool stuff back.

The real thing is, those unnecessary crossovers and the like are safe, but the thing is so are cars. All they do by choosing to drive big trucks and crossovers they don't need, is endangering the people who were reasonable enough to drive a car instead of another box. Their sense of "ride height" is what makes them think they're above the other "plebs in cars".
One of my cars is a Z06, and I think about this every time I drive it. Stupid assholes in these oversized hatchbacks on stilts texting on their phone are such a hazard. God help me if one of their dumbasses ever hit me, I'd probably die and they'd walk away. Entirely no need for those shitty things, they only got pushed because manufacturers could make them cheap and rake in lots of profit and convinced everyone they needed this. I had the discussion with my mother in law. She insisted that she wanted a small SUV as the replacement for her 2001 Camry (which just joined the 300k mile club, so well done on that Toyota). She was all "Well I want to be able to see, and the SUVs are safer and they have AWD and are better equipped (blah blah blah).
Long story short, shes unhappy that her brand new CR-V rides like shit, and gets worse fuel mileage, and has so little feedback from the steering that its scary to drive on the highway.

If a hatch is a used hatch, good news. If a hatch becomes a classic, then it goes out of your reach most of the time. Unfortunately due to incredibly low sales and high desirability in the future for those hot hatches, I suspect these will be prohibitely expensive in the future, up to a point where a guy might get his car crushed as his Focus RS was smuggled from Great Britain as the vehicle in question would be too expensive to own stateside.

As someone with a degree in economics and business, this is typical, stupid, American, corporate knee jerk response. First of all, not everyone wants an egg shaped mini crossover. Not everyone wants an electric self driving bubble. Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords, and Nissan Altimas are still selling right? So it's not that people don't want 4 door sedans, they just don't want YOURS. At least, for god's sake, keep one. Keep the Fusion and that's it.

Takes around 300000km for the ev to compensate its carbon footprint comared to the mazda. And thats asuming the battery lasts 300000km, which it wont, you can expect a lifespan of roughly 200000km before you need replacement. So in actuality Evs are more harmful than efficient ICEs. Its only when you compare EVs to the average, which includes 20-30 year old 5l trucks that evs show favourable environmental strain.
Hydrogen is a truly clean fuel source. At least much more so than electricity. Its also much more suitable for use in a car and not based upon a limited resource like evs are. Its just not trendy at the moment. Give it a decade or two and hydrogen will begin taking over like evs are today, due to its merit as the superior fuel.

The Focus and Fiesta will continue to be built in Europe for sure. Ford cannot leave the European market and big trucks like the F-150 simply don't sell in Europe because they're impractical here.

The public has this ill conceived notion that crossovers are more roomy, and more capable in offroad scenarios, but if you look at interior volume of midsized sedans compared to crossovers, they're pretty close. You'll usually get better gas mileage out of a car as well. However, Ford is in the business of making money. They're just making changes based on the market. If people want SUV's, then they should tailor their business to fill that need. They are also seeing the writing on the wall as far as ride sharing is concerned. I think of all the changes being made to car tech, the most impactful will be ride sharing. One day owning your own car will be not that common. I hate it, but you'd be blind to think otherwise.

Ford's runaway success in this new market was the Falcon, which Ford Australia also received. After the 1966 model year (or somewhere are there) Ford Australia took it and ran with it, developing it for their own needs and wants. The original Falcon survived in the US as it's original economy car purpose until 1969.

I've only owned Honda's and Toyotas. Why? Because they're reliable, require the least in maintenance over a ten year period (how long I typically keep a car), and are long lasting. No way I'd buy American.
Police departments, rental car companies, corporations, and various federal agencies all used to buy fleets of dozens, hundreds, even thousands of Ford cars.
As for the police, Dodge has encroached on a huge portion of that market (with the cooler looking Charger), and I see cops rolling around in Explorer SUVs a lot now.
For cops, the explorer is a much better vehicle than the Crown vic. Much more room for equipment and better all-weather handling.

The chargers are made for HWP units (Highway Patrol) and the explorers made for smaller areas, they are both very useful and have their pros and cons which equal out

Jesus H Medrano not really.. with the new ecoboost engines, they make incredible mileage and power. The new F150s are the size of a small yacht and they’ve made better power, torque, and fuel economy than ever before! With engines like that, it makes sense to buy a truck of SUV that makes the same mileage as a sedan or wagon. I mean, you can drive 600 miles on a single tank of gas...IN AN F150!! It’s absurd!! But awesome.

SmuffyGT I agree, but you have to admit it is a considerable step in the right direction. With a 36 gallon tank, you can drive from west Michigan all the way to middle Tennessee (about 600mi) on one tank of gas, and still have some left over for the ride back. That’s pretty damn good for a truck that’s basically a a large box on wheels lol.

People that love the Crown Vic love them so much. But there are not many of you Crown Vic lovers left. Same goes for the Lincoln Town Car of which I am a fanatic fan. I bought one in pristine condition one private owner with a perfect interior for $3,000. Loved it. Bought it in June 2019 and in Jan 2020 I got hit by a Ford F-350. Probably why I only suffered muscle fatigue after that accident and nothing serious is because those Town Cars are safe and big. So after that I could not find another in that kind of shape in time to have something to drive back and forth to work on. Now I'm driving something I like but not in a fan club over. The nice ones are hard to find. But you know they go for peanuts because most people consider those old people cars and the younger people keep entering into the driving pool. Young folks won't even see those cars on the road. Practically they are invisible to the kid that wants a push button start vehicle with Bluetooth technology. Times have changed and we'll never see these Crown Vics return. You might see Jesus return soon though.

Yep. Trucks and crossovers or nothing. People fail to realize Hatchbacks and Wagons are just as practical and buy the crossovers anyway. In fact the current only wagon sold by a U.S. automaker (the one Opel rebadged as a Buick) is even being marketed as a Crossover and is receiving tacky looking body mouldings to give it more of a Crossover-like appearance. Nobody thought they'd live to see the day where you have to make a car uglier to make people want it.
My wife wants a crossover because it easier to get children in and out than a sedan. I'm gonna guess alot more people think this way as well. To me a crossover is just a car with higher center of gravity which takes away the fun from a car, and since they're based on cars they cant offroad which takes the fun out of having an SUV. God theyre so boring.

Even here in my little town of Somerset West, South Africa we are seeing the effect of trucks ("bakkies" or "buck-keys" which is tray or container in Afrikaans) mostly the Ranger dominanting the roads here with older Ford models and the occasional Frat Matt in an ST. And yeah like your other episodes on the popularity of SUVs it all makes great sense. And cudos to Ford for knowing their strengths but the obvious bummer is the loss of some sick models.
