I have one of these (2.0 )but the screen is dark and hard to see at times ..much darker than the original model of this ive had for years and v2.0 is supposed to be better...Any suggestions? Thanks.
Sounds like the backlight is dying. You may be able to buy a replacement lcd if you know the model number (written on the back of the original lcd), or if you are comfortable you can try to desolder the old leds and replace them with new ones.
I was hoping for something a little more interesting/challenging but at the end of the day I did get to sit back and enjoy playing some snes in bed so I cant complain!
I am no expert Shawn, and I wouldn't dare question your knowledge... but is probing and putting power in a circuit board on a carpet a good idea? Great video though!
Thanks, bro! It is fine so long as I dont drag it on the carpet, it isnt a dry winter, or I dont have anything conductive on the floor. I've been doing this since I was 8 and have never managed to break anything due to esd. Obviously though if it is something valuable and you are worried then just dont risk it.
Mine is just completely off. I don't know if my charger is even right, and they're going for an outrageous amount online. Can't find a correct charger anywhere
IIRC the charger isn't anything special but I remember it being an odd voltage or something. I'd have to check when I find it (it's probably still packed in some box that I haven't gotten to since I moved in to the new house).
Sure it's possible to desolder and replace the connector, the difficulty is finding a compatible replacement connector. Your best bet is to take measurements of pin spacing and how many pins it has and search digikey or mouser.
Hey brother nice repair! My screen has randomly developed a permanent white horizontal line that is there no matter what game i play or even if a game is inserted..was wondering if you had any suggestions.
I think it was 1.0 since I heard they fixed the audio problems in castlevania 3 in v 2.0 and when I popped it in mine the audio was definitely ungodly!
I don't have access to mine right now so I unfortunately cant check the lcd model number so you'd have to open yours to find it. It looks like a generic 3.5" 320x240 lcd they sell commonly for car reverse monitors but I couldn't guarantee without matching model numbers.
Looks like you can get a replacement from aliexpress (www.aliexpress.com/i/32825400472.html), depends if you want to invest the $20 for the part but should be an easy replacement.
I broke a singular pin on this thing 😪 I was able to nudge it back and make a connection however, it is not plays one out of the 10 games I’ve tested on it
Nice job, I had mine for about two months of light gaming and suddenly failed to read games, it turns on fine, I am guessing could be related to the pin conector do you have any suggestion ?
Hi, I know this video is 5 years old, but do you think it would be possible to change out the screen with a better one? I was looking int9mit but want a more experienced persons opinion before attempting
Any 5v composite input 3.5" screen will work, just the options for better looking ones are going to be limited since I doubt many companies are still making/selling composite lcds anymore.
I do not know if you will reply, but I purchased one of these a while back and noticed I had red dots on the screen. I opened it up, and saw a lot of flux and crap on the boards as well. And some pink residue. So I cleaned the board and contacts as best I could. Anyway, in the process of opening it, I snapped the battery cord (it was stuck with some flux or something in the socket). Is there any way to find a replacement battery? Also. Could I send it into you for a repair?
The red dots on the screen sounds a bit like stuck pixels. As for the battery it should be possible to resolder the battery wires back on instead of buying a new battery. I'm a bit overwhelmed currently with commissions and repairs I've taken, but if you'd like me to fix it for you shoot me an email at sjm4306@gmail.com and I can get on it when things settle down.

Actually purchased it before I found your video, but I know nothing about repairs like this I just thought it would be a nice thing to experiment with. I have 4 pictures of the main area according to this video and I just need to know what to solder to fix it. If you could help lemme know.

Yeah a multimeter will be necessary to check what failed. Just follow the power rail from input jack through the components downstream till you find where the power stops and that's your failed component.
Amazing skills. How do you know what volts a capacitor must have? That's a nice skill to know. Do you know of a way to revive a lithium-ion battery (this is for a iPhone 5), it's new, just days when I used it (from iFixit, Apple OEM), it had not be charged for a long time, now the battery I believe won't charge anymore. God bless, Proverbs 31
Most of these hardware clone systems run at 5V (well the core logic does). If you have no idea you can usually guess by deductive reasoning by looking at the rail voltage decoupling cap ratings (for example: 6.3V caps probably mean 5V rail, 4V caps probably mean 3.3V rail). Additionally find the main chips and look up the datasheet to see what voltages they run at to give you a clue. For your iPhone battery, you can revive it using a very low constant current (something like 10-20mA) to trickle charge it until the voltage gets up to around 3V and then use the phone to charge it the rest of the way. If you do this though be super careful to measure the temperature the whole time and keep an eye on it as once the voltage on a lithium rechargeable drops below ~2V it is not supposed to be used for fear of it igniting or venting hydrogen gas if recharged.
Thanks again. That's hopeful and they say if these types of batteries won't charge anymore if it's at zero charge for months. What kind of juryrig/diy wire do I use that has 10-20mA (by the way where do I dial to, in the multi-tester to measure amps, is it the capacitor one or AC or DC one). Which gadgets do I have, have you think has the specs (will stick two wires out their plugs I guess): 1. USB power cable for an external hard drive enclosure 2.Game Boy Color AC adapter (it's wires been cut off already from recent revive project but it's heat shrinked). 3. Eneloop battery charger (insert 2 thin wire in the + & ground held by an Eneloop battery. How thin should the wires be though) 4. USB charger for the Wacom Intuos 4 5. Speaker 2.1 AC adapter 6. Could a small 10v battery be used? 7. Thanks. I'll wrap it in aluminum just in case it catches on fire. So it's much safer could I just use three 1.2 rechargeable batteries then 1.5 regular batteries for a total of 5.1v? Or the amps with this battery setup is too weak?
The voltage doesn't really matter (just keep it low ~3-5V), it is the low current defined by the series resistor that is important. We are just pre-charging the battery till it gets to around 3V, then the actual iphone internal charger can recognize the battery after that point to fully charge it.

That would unfortunately likely be permanent damage to the lcd, only practical fix would be to replace the screen.
My retro duo portable screen won’t display but the sound is on do you have a video or solution for that
I'd check the connection between the main board and lcd. Either the screen isn't getting power or composite video

Likely the cart slot pins like you've guessed, all it takes is a single bad connection to fail to boot a game
