  • When the guys over at Stiles invited us out to see some of their machines in action, we jumped at the chance to tour a multi million dollar woodworking facility and really see how production shops operate! We also stop by local woodshop Dakoda Love, and check out their booming floating shelves business!

It's all terrific stuff operationally. At my age though, I now finally have the privilege of being the adult in the room.
Tread carefully when it comes to the acquisition of equipment like this, as the ratios of initial purchase cost to operational cost are VERY different from what most recreational and maker-level woodworkers are used to. The infrastructure, power, support, maintenance, software licensing, upgrades, tooling, materials, and operational costs all increase along with that gain in efficiency. Just look at everything else that ISN'T a machine in those plants, and figure out what it costs to install and maintain.
And unlike humans, You can't 'layoff' machines, infrastructure, and square feet when all of a sudden there is not enough work available for them. Especially in low-cost credit markets, it is VERY easy to get over-extended. My suggestion is to, in a perfect world, pay all cash or at the very least, do your payback calculations based on having only 40%-50% of the business revenue you think you will have. All of the things these machines make are highly discretionary-income driven products, and their demand disappears immediately at the first economic downturn.
Study 2008 very carefully; when all of these kinds of machines were available on the secondary market at 20¢ on the dollar due to all of the bankruptcies and repossessions. To be clear; I'm not saying don't try to grow, but I AM saying plan carefully, and always consider the downside case in order to protect yourself.

This is just huge advice for all businesses. Don't try and over grow. I did this with my business years ago and it set us back a good 6 years. Overgrowth is often one of the major failures of all businesses. That being said when you have a product that you can cut huge amounts of human hours and errors out of automation is amazing. I work in the tech industry and a script that might take a week to write can save hours each day and send email alerts.
These types of production units are different than my business however I am into metal and wood working as well and love it.
2008 was a interesting time wish I had more funds and not sunk into my business at the time as I could have bought a lot of great gear back then. Starting it in 2007 was interesting. Still around now so at least doing something right!

i used to work in a cabinetry shop with some of these machines it was fun and interesting and 100 % agree one of our biggest bottle necks were the edgebanding machine being down or just plain messing up. though i wouldn't fault the machine most issues was lack of proper maintenence and whoever was working on it didn't have enough experience and couldn't trouble shoot the problems

    • @larsvegas1505

ive worked in a factory that makes office desks/tables.. we had like 1 machine that cut the desks to size, put all the holes in and also did the edgebanding (more like a big cnc machine).. we did have to put on the panels by hand though.. but that thing was fast af... did like a whole desk in about 30 seconds.. also this was like 20 years ago.. so to me these machines look a little weird being so new but also less efficient.. cause u need like 4 machines to do the job the 1 big cnc could do back then (and that machine was not new back then).

I worked at a furniture manufacturer for 2.5 years. Not cheap crappy shit. High end solid wood stuff. I was in the breakout department. Ran a chop saw and planner like the first two machines, chain drive rip saws. Assisted on other machines too. The mulit blade rip saw and automated chop saw would blow your mind.
Some days were 8 hours feeding or tailing the planner. Bundle after bundle of rough sawn lumber 4,5,6,8,10 quarter material. We are talking 1000's of board feet a day. (They would get tractor trailer loads or just cherry, or ash, or maple.)
The wood would then go through go through auto chop saw. Input your rough lengths, mark any knots and such on the board, slide the board in, the computer figured out what was best to cut from that piece and it shoots it out the back in separate areas.

Kind of funny that you barely scratched the surface of woodworking machines at Stiles. Also, funny how people are saying how many people these machines are replacing, they aren't, just reallocating what those people are working on. If they say it's not woodworking, build stuff with all hand tools and make a living at it. Very tough to do because no one wants to pay for all that labor cost. Let machines do the work and you concentrate of the detail stuff. Quit drooling and get back to work!

Man, I love y'alls content and really look forward to each video drop, but the Blare Witch camera work and editing on this one made me nauseous. Maybe invest in a steady cam and get your editor to reduce his caffeine consumption? Other than that, keep up the great work! I've really loved following your progress in the new shop.

I am not trying to be a negative nancy, this all looks cool, but I can't help but think: "What is the cost, both in time and financially, in maintaining and repairing them?" I'm not doubting that you still get improved productivity, but as someone who has to troubleshoot machines I don't really understand semi-frequently, and has seen my boss pay a guy several thousand dollars to show up and shrug and say "I don't know," these things seem like they not only have a huge barrier to entry, but barrier to maintenance.
