Some of THE BEST RUNNERS in California come from the Central Valley. When I ran cross country in high school there was this guy from Merced who could run all day. There was this other kid named Rich Kimble who, in one track meet, ran an 8:49 Two Mile and a 4:02 Mile. The guy also came from Sacramento, which is considered part of the Central Valley. Something about the flatness of the locale. In fact, two of America’s premier runners a number of years ago were Jim Ryan and Craig Virgin. Ryan came from Kansas and Virgin was from Illinois, areas that are pretty much devoid of mountains and hills unlike the Bay Area and other parts of California.

I remember Kimble. I saw him run the mile against the top two runners at O'Dowd. He won, naturally, with the O'Dowd runners like the hounds of hell -- right on his heels -- but never catching him. It was like watching three top-flight athletes sprint four times around the track.

@@michaelodonnell7580 I ran against Kimble at a cross country invitational meet in 1972. I take a little bit of pride knowing I lead for the first quarter mile and then he blew right by me. Kimble came in first by a wide margin, but he was disqualified for running inside a course marker. I wound up moving one place to finish fourth. When I heard what happened I, along with the top finishers, lodged a protest with the meet organizers. Kimble’s running error was a matter of 1 foot. If he had stayed on the course he would have finished a ten of a second slower. It was such a boneheaded call by the meet officials. That was my first and only race against Rich.

Hope you’re winning. My daughter got into CC by accident. She was a cheerleader and the CC coach would see her running when they had workout days and he kept asking her if she wanted to try CC and the track team. She was already 5’10”, so he wanted her for running. high jump, long jump, and triple jump. She would come home and tell me the coach talked to me again, so one day I told her just go to practice and see if you like it. She LOVED it. She liked it so much she quit cheer, which she had done for 12 years and did CC and track the last two years of high school. She’s 34 now and is still running and now does full marathons. You never know where it’s going to take you, so good luck to you.
