    This movie is a testament to all adults especially ESPECIALLY All teachers that you are the ones that have power. Power to give even the most broken and down troden of children a chance to become great if only you use that power wisely and not pilfer the opportunity you have

    Playing football back in the day 40+ years ago (cough) - We played a similar orphanage called Sacred Heart in Muenster Tx. I dont know if they even have a team now but back then they did. Their fan base was minimal, their field and facilities were in a sadden state needing plenty of tlc. The field had stickers (which we were used to as we were a small school and practiced in a sticker field). My dad would tease me saying to take it easy on those that were in their situation. My reply was "no pop! They suit up and play just like we do. They deserve our A game, as they will be bringing their A game. So I will play as hard as I can because on the field that is the ultimate respect." Before & after the game it was hand shakes, well wishes, good game type atmosphere. During the game it was an all out ass kickicking contest to see who would win. Though we never lost to Sacred Heart, I promise you they had some D1 talent and deserved the respect of all that suited up against them.

    This is the type of movie that one should show one's children. It is a beautiful story of young men who felt that they would never have a chance to be, become anything worthy of note who, because of a teacher who really cared about them and want them to succeed - invested his time, his intelligence and his love in them and showed the world what can be done when one believes in another and doesn't hold back.
    Thank you for your excellent narration and telling of the story. Good job.

    Emotional good movie. Loves their strength and spirit, I'm glad they have such a good and patience teacher with a supportive wife. That's what the orphans probably needed, not just the feeling of being loved, but being trusted and belonged, that's what will heal their pains of losing their birth parents.

    Actually they were second in Texas High School Football because the team that beat them in the Texas state championship was my grandfather’s team and he was the star running back because he lived and played at Amarillo and later played football at OU as the Running Back before graduating and serving in WW2 at Leyte Gulf. However, the 12 mighty orphans were definitely bad ass teenagers that overcame adversity and overwhelming odds to get to the State Championship.

      Have you considered the concept that your story is false. 2 minutes on google the final game was a tie so the final game was a cochampionship. Maybe your grandfather just wanted to sound cool lul.

    • @aceflowh9133
      @aceflowh9133 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Spartan_767 "The game ended in a scoreless tie, but because Corsicana had a 4-1 advantage and were declared the winner.
      Many years later, the Texas Interscholastic League, changed its interpretation of the 1932 state title game. Today the game is considered a tie, meaning that the Masonic Home and Corsicana were co-state champions that year."
      So basically they lost according to the rules of the game at that time (I don't know if the rules for victor determined in the even of a scoreless tie has changed since), however the league they were in changed the rules and the result of the game many years later just to give the Masonic Home a historic joint "victory" for good publicity and because they had so much popularity so they wanted to give them a better story. Therefore he is not actually lying based on the reasons in your statement and realistically his granddad's team did win and they lifted the trophy.

    • @L8nitedave
      @L8nitedave ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well this is a hodge podge of facts to simplify the bigger story. "Fairbanks", the guy who's leg was broken is my uncle. There is a piano briefly shown in the movie, "Mary Kate" played that and became a well known pianist. She was my mom. "Bones" not in the movie but one familiar to "doc" because of health issues was my Dad. The families of these people all agree they were a little loose with the facts but overall did a good job of condensing it to an understandable story for movie purposes.

  • @markwilliams3174
    @markwilliams3174 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    You can see why Martin Sheen wanted to get involved in the movie: an inspirational story of young people enduring the tragedy of being orphaned, using sport to transcend their traumas and hardship, to become an extended family and be the pride of their community and themselves

    • @L8nitedave
      @L8nitedave ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually education, community, and self esteem development, which sport can play part of that were motivating disciplines. Winning or pride while important was not the goal. It was simply so these kids could function and survive without the support systems the rest of us have. Martin did do a pretty good job of representing "Doc" .

    So many psychological testings and experiments have been done to prove without a shadow of a doubt that the "placebo effect" is most powerful. Whether telling a cancer patient an injection has a high cure rate & watching them recover completely or encouraging ppl, not just young minds, that they are SO capable and brilliant that they go on to achieve great things in their lives otherwise they wouldn't have. The mind with love and encouragement is capable of incredible achievement.

    At 74, I realized, I had been a winner all my life, when I accepted in weakness confessed, was truly real strength. This is when we are who we are. And those who think they are strong are weak, and will always feel inferior and unreal.
    This movie defines real strength comes from recognizing weaknesses are disguised as real strength. Bravo 👏

    From FWHistorical :
    "Several students from the Masonic Home football team went on to have great success in life after leaving the school.
    Harrison Miller Moseley, class of 1938 valedictorian, attended TCU and went on to work with Albert Einstein on the Manhattan project, which created the world’s first atomic bomb.
    Dewitt Coulter, class of 1943, went on to play college football at west point and later in the NFL for the New York Giants. He was inducted into the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.
    In 2005, the Masonic Home closed its doors. Today, only a few artifacts remain of the place that helped shape the lives of so many Texas orphans for 121 years.
