@@dbautistamedia Yeah I wish I had picked some other idols growing up. I played alot of Tool and Radiohead before I got into nu metal, but the simplicity completely took me over.
I love Deftones, my favorite band of all time, but Stephen Carpenter is not a very good guitarist at all... that guy is just adding strings and playing in whatever key his top sting is in at the time.. he's also using the same chord structures he's been using for 25 + years. I love it for what it is.. but Chino and Abe are the driving talent in that band.. shit there's a recent album that he admits to barely playing on.. Ohms I think it was.
You honestly played that Out of Style riff better than anyone else I've seen on here. Great video, man! It's pretty wild how inventive Wes's writing/playing style actually is. Fred Durst might be a goofy dude, but Wes, John, and Sam are without a doubt pro level musicians.
That Out of Style riff is such a Whammy Workout! Haha. I got tired after a few bars. Yeah solid musicians. Fred Durst questionable....but guess solid in his own way

Gary! Every time I check out one of your videos Im impressed. I can tell you put a lot of work into them. Great shots and lighting. Love your mind for guitar. I learn new stuff from you all of the time. And of course, I keep coming back because I love the tunings and tones you pull out. I always like seeing that jazzmaster type custom baritone you have. The blue and the black pearl looks awesome. Guitars look good, you sound great. I am always surprised how few people watch your stuff. Quality content all over your channel. Keep it up! Love from Texas
Thanks so much! Super glad you enjoying the content. And thanks so much for the kids words. Share the video around on the ones you like. Great way to spread the word :)
Wonderful summary and demo! Maybe would you cover Black Light Burns sometime as well? Also legacy by Wes, amazing work there, too. I am terrible to not mention Nick Annis as guitarist in that band, probably a great cooperative work of the two.
"Say what you will about Limp Bizkit..." I'll say this: they sold 40 million albums in their career and blended nu-metal with melodic licks, actually decent rapping, damn tight grooves of the bass and percussion working together in an atmosphere of a highly pyroclastic soundscape of the 90s and early 2000s. The juvenile machismo of Fred was chided far too often but the man has produced more artists and brought more platinum selling artists to the mainstream than we ever bothered to mention because we were too busy riding the hate bus.
I was born in 91. Loved listening to Limp Bizkit as a kid and still love listening to them now. They were an early introduction into heavy music for me. People can talk shit about the Bizkit but they're just afraid to admit they like it.
Wes was , is and will be (unfortunately) the most overlooked guitarist.... the riffs, pacing, chord progression, power chords, creativity, sound..... eh....
If you have a 1500 series bridge you can still do the flick trick you just have to hold the guitar upright. That's the only thing about the older trem setups I miss is that lock
IMO, the key to sounding like Wes, is knowing exactly when to stop working on a riff. He always gives his riffs just enough to be interesting, and quits adding before the groove gets too cluttered. You can see the Primus influence, Larry is also a master of this type of riffage, though Lary usually creates chaos rather than groove. Kristofer Steen from Refused is another great example. I tend make riffs pretty busy, but I think theres allot to be learned from players like Wes.
Amazing video about one of my favorite guitar player of the world ! I was wondering, would please tell me the reference of the guitar with the floyd rose, she's amazing and really inspiring ! Greetings from belgium!
I still need someone to tell me how to get Wes’ tone on Hot Dog. I feel like it is highly produced, so I don’t know how you even replicate it. It reminds me of “tear away“ by Drowning Pool.
Not sure you can say he’s underrated: even Limp Bizkit haters seem to appreciate Wes praising his unique style and persona 😅 Also judging on his interviews he’s just a really-really sweet guy
That's because you use the Trem bar. Its easier to have it facing the other way. You play the note and then hit the trem bar after it to give that vibrato effect to the note.
Thanks. I was just focusing on riffs. where he did different unique stuff. So its not really a Best of Riffs video but more a 'check the weird stuff that Wes does!' video. Will definitely do more videos on him in the future.
One of my best musician friends is the only guy I know to draw a comparison between Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Moreso with Korn but they are both funk bands. Look at Korn’s grooves and it’s just downtuned dissonant Chili Peppers funk.
The rhythm section of Limp Bizkit are the best of those that came out in the 90s. If you want to really experience why, find the Limp Bizkit tracks where the vocals have been mixed out. You can hear all the amazing, drums, bass and layered guitar that show why. Sam, John and Wes are really overshadowed by an MTV clown who kind of undermined the legacy of some incredible musicians.
How to sound like Wes Borland? Take a beat-up, dinged and gouged guitar you found in a dumpster with one rusty string on it, plug it into a shitty combo amp with half of the tubes blown, crank the volume and throw the guitar down a flight of stairs. There you go! LOL!
I expect how to sound like wes to have a run down of his rig, not how to play the riffs ie Wes Borlands guitar techniques still a good video just kind of misleading title or atleast confusing.

I'm not a huge Limp Bizkit fan, but Wes Borland wrote some pretty original riffs and has a really big sound. Credit where it's due
The big sound is in mixing. He was a conpositional Genius Bubye
Yes, agree.. that's exactly 💯 why like wes borland
Check black light burns if you want to appreciate wes riffing without limp Bizkit
Between Stephen Carpenter and Wes Borland, they both really shaped how I play today.
For me it’s Wes and Head
Wes Borland, Stephen Carpenter and Mike Einzenger from Incubus are mine.
I shaped my playing based on the Nu Metal guys until I discovered John Petrucci 😂 now it's a blend

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. The guitar is a Squier Stagemaster. They were made between 2000-2004. Very well made Squiers. Neck feels amazing
bravo ❤❤❤❤
props for doing the rolling part. he uses the Wammy pedal to do it. but crazy that you did it with the wammy bar haha

@@GaryHiebner what a legend. good job all the same. he used the whammy pedal in recording 100%, he explained it in a guitar world back in the day.
