I won't say that other versions suck, but there is a richness to this version that I haven't heard from others. It's the best I've heard.

@@timesawasting7532 It was entirely shot in Harpswell. It was 5:00 am on a cool December morning. -2 degrees. Perfect for chantey singing.
It took me a while to figure out what the point of this opening montage was. This scene shows the town's men going about their work, and the rest of the movie shows what the town's women are up to while the men are off at work.

What a great way to open the movie. This was surely recorded in a studio, but it somehow has that outdoor sound, with no walls. Excellent job!
Just a side note but everything I sang was recorded outside on location. The chorus parts were from the studio recording but my parts were all live.

And outside? With your penetrating voice - you could be a foghorn in a lighthouse! Except it is more likely to draw the sailors nearer.
And I can see where the mouths don't always match the singing, in the chorus. Were they the actual singers, or just locals that looked the part? (you may not want to answer that)

@FosterKid, I agree. I think it's the slow tempo, a capella signing, and baritone register. It's "haunting". Other versions suck -- too cheery, "light" or up-tempo.
Usually the different tempos indicate a different type of work being done or a different work pace. The lyrics all change based on the people singing it too

I loved the movie. It was unique and eccentric. There were subtle things I didn't catch until I watched the second time, like the old ladies washing the cooler and taking out the trash at the end.

From Google, 'blow the man down' refers to a knockdown punch in the face! 'Shiver me timbers' is how the ship shakes when hit with a cannonball. I've always wondered. Sometimes curiosity is a good thing!
IDK, i read this one in Wikipedia: "The lyric "Blow the man down" most likely refers to a common mishap at sea during the age of sail wherein a strong, sudden gale catches a ship with its topsails fully set - the force of the wind, depending upon the load and balance of the ship's cargo, can actually "blow the man down", or blow the man-o'-war down into the water, partially capsizing it." Great song rendition, great film. Blow The Man Down makes clever use of symbolism and offers a solid reflection on money laundering and those who unknowingly profit from it. Reminiscent of Winter's Bone.

Prime has so many new movies! And who makes these movies, and why? I liked it, and loved the singing! But what is the market for it? All that money, for basically 'direct to cable'? I thank them all, but why do these make so little, while tripe like Marvel movies make a fortune???

Going to respond with one word: monopoly. Movies like these, if they are not produced or distributed by Disney, won't have a fighting chance in theaters due to their limited audience range and economical risk. After this quarantine, this might become the norm.
