I disagree with her. 100% the 2nd game is a true masterpiece and a work of art. it's a realistic view on what a world would look like if it would to fall as it did.
It's a shame that you didn't give the second game a chance to win you back. It's a masterpiece. The storytelling, writing, character development, it's just on a whole other level.
2nd game was outstanding. I understand people that were upset because of what happened so early on in the game but the story of what the pain of losing someone can do to someone and how their hunger for revenge can overtake them was so well done. I can not wait for the show to tell this story. The end of episode 2 should shock everyone who did not play the game.
Not to be dramatic, but the second game changed so much of my worldview. I was not in a great headspace when I first played, and it got me rethinking the path I was going down. Only powerful media can have an impact on someone like that in my opinion. Maybe Kathy needed to finish the game to understand fully why they made the creative decisions they did. No matter, I am glad they are covering the second game and based on this trailer it seems like the creatives understand how to capture the game's tone for the show.
@@rafaelnussi2001 ... In season 1 they softened up Joel and made him look more vulnerable than in the game, and I noticed that he is also sheading tears at the end of this teaser, so I also suspect season 2 to be more soft and more about love in some places than the game.
The second game is about grief, loss, humanity, and forgiveness. Calling it a game about hate or revenge is intentionally obtuse to what the bulk of the story covers.
I had to play it a second time to really understand how much of a masterpiece it was, in its own way. I was extremely mad, but pushed through and enjoyed it. Then the second play through made me fall in love with it like I did part 1. Definitely worth giving it another try. I’m excited and sad for season 2. They’re also saying they’ll make the second game into 2 seasons.
Luke Stephens, a well known gaming youtuber, did a poll that revealed that most people who stopped playing TLOU2 half way disliked it, and most people who completed it loved it. TLOU2 is not the standard blockbuster sequel with more of the same: Joel and Ellie on another adventure. It's an exploration into the consequences of violence, and it is all about the events and complex dynamics of TLOU1. I truly believe season 2 will demonstrate the superior quality of its story, in a way that's going to be much more unanimous than when the game was launched. People just weren't ready. Hope Kathy changes her mind.
Very much disagree with her! Lol honestly it was one of the best video game stories ever told and it was ballsy! It just comes to the whole thing if ya like that kind of story or not. It’s a dark story and honestly haven’t played it since I bought it lol it takes a lot out of u. I can’t wait for this season I like that it’s not the carbon copy of the first one. Ya should definitely finish the game too! Of course we were traumatized but that doesn’t make it bad. Plus highly acclaimed from game reviewers so don’t worry guys it’s good!
It's amazing. I understand not liking it, but it fit the world of Last of Us perfectly. The other thing is that the criticism is lame without getting through the whole game. They make beautiful choices in that story telling puts you in the roles of the people affected by Joel Miller. It was bold, it was different and in the end it played out to show you a theme that was destroying the usual revenge trope.
It’s not a vanilla story like much of what we are used to in terms of mainstream storytelling. The characters in TLOU are storytelling devices that reflect the nature of humanity when faced against impossible odds. The story is not about infected in a world of people, but about survivors and their stories in a world that no longer belongs to them. And in contrast, humanity is meant to be seen as the darkness, and it is up to each of us to find our way forward. “When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light.” When life takes an unexpected turn full of loss and sorrow, we don’t get to say “No thank you, I don’t like that.” We react. And so we decide to search for the light, or become blinded by the darkness. Blinded by grief, by anger, and by seeking justice (revenge) at any cost. If a story makes you feel true loss and you find yourself attuned to a protagonists emotions, I’d say that is fantastic storytelling. I understand people’s negativity toward the game. We all mourn differently and those who have experienced loss would never choose to go through that feeling again. Then here comes TLOU 2, amid a global pandemic no less, to distract everyone from the sickness and the death just to lose a best friend! I don’t blame anyone, but to say it’s bad storytelling is just plain incorrect in my eyes, and to those who truly love the game, characters, and a good story, no matter the cost.
@@thebatmanbadass30000 I agree. Personally to me it’s one of the best video games I ever played and I think it’s much better than part 1. It actually is a story about closure and healing. But you’ll have to finish it first it to understand that ;)
Part II is pretty hard to take in, as it's by far the most brutal and emotionally demanding game EVER, nothing else comes even close. But that's why it's such a masterpiece, with almost perfect writing and storytelling. You have to go back and finish it, and after you did, I'm pretty sure you'll change your mind. Can't wait to see how they put all that into the tv series.
All the people who ragequit the second game because of 'the gold club incident', are just proving what they are trying to say with the story. Emotional bias can be dangerous. The two main characters have acted on exactly the same motive, but the haters only want to justify Ellie's choices because they grew attached to her in the first game. And what's ironic is that it's the other character who achieves the moral high ground.. even if the haters don't want to admit it.
Even though their decision in the second game was shocking, and very hard to get past.I was so mad. The game was even better then the first one. Can't wait for season two to start, but still nervous and excited.
First of all everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I have to say that I respectfully disagree with Kathy(also she said that she didn't even finish the 2nd game which means her opinion really holds no value because it's based on an incomplete experience) If I may suggest going back and completely finishing it. Also a few months ago they released The Last Of Us Part 2 Remaster on the PS5 so it's a great time to replay it... As a huge TLOU fan who absolutely loves both games Part 1 and Part 2 both masterpieces it's my favorite game series of all time. I promise no spoilers. But the story of the 2nd game is so beautiful, complex, deeply thought provoking full of emotions, it's really a human study on how trauma, pain, obsession, can shape us, and how one's decisions can have massive consequences and ripple effects especially living in such a brutal post-apocalyptic world. This trailer I got goosebumps all over it looks so wonderful I recognize so much from the 2nd game. Also Abby became one of my favorite characters, and Kaitlyn Dever is a great actress I look forward to seeing her portrayal. I simply cannot wait!!! thank you for the reaction video cheers.
I feel like this woman quit as soon as the event happened...and I've got news for that woman....they ain't backing out of it. No way. What would they make the rest of the show about? That event is CENTRAL to the story. Also, it's unfair and very shallow to judge something like this that u admittedly didn't finish because u didn't like something. It's like someone saying all of Tarantinos movies are bad because u don't curse, but quit watching because of the cursing and tell everyone the movies are just bad when u didn't give it a chance. Which she didn't. How many awards did that game win? It was A LOT.
Also to be fair i saw so many bad reviews of the second game that i did not feel motivated to get past an awful narrative choice. Its just me! But gonna dive back in and eat crow if thats what it takes!
TLOU2 is my test story for people. I simply don't respect your opinion on storytelling if you think that is bad. You can not like it but to say it's bad is asinine.
I know part II wasn’t an ideal choice people liked, but if you can push yourself to play through the game to the end, you may be surprised how you feel at the end of it. Unless you’ve watched a play through of someone and already know and are forming your decision of disliking it on that. I loved the game so much. The 2nd game had great game mechanics and story. The only issue for me was the pacing of the game due to the way the story was told, but overall it was an amazing game.
A lot of people hated the second game and even more people loved it by every metric. As far as there being bad decisions and bad execution Part 2 won 300 different game of the year awards. It sold 10 million copies over the 2 years after release meaning that by then people knew about the negative reaction,. the campaign of hate directed at the game, Neil Druckman the creator and Laure Bailey the actress who played Abby in particular. They knew the event in the game concerning Joel and the change of character they would be playing as for a good portion of the game. Knowing all of this the game still sold millions of more copies. In anticipation of the next season many of those commenting who have played both games say they liked the second game better than the first which even surprised me. Not for the reasons that those who hate it would give but because no matter how good the sequel may be people tend to have fond memories of their first experience of a game or characters that leaves them unable to be totally objective about any sequel let alone one this controversial. This was a game with a purpose, not just a story to tell but something important to experience and think about. Neil often says he doesn't care if someone loves or hates the game, only if they are indifferent to it. It is made to make the player uncomfortable at times. Many people claim to understand that while complaining that because they "got it" they should have been able to quickly opt out of what made them uncomfortable. But doing so would just demonstrate that they really didn't "get it" in a way that matters. You can hate it, you can even stop playing it. But if you do stop you forfeit the right to make claims about the terrible things that happen and the "terrible" decisions involved in creating the game. You didn't like it, that;s fine. But you never finished it, you have no idea what those "terrible decisions" were leading to or the overall impact they had on the story as a totality. You certainly can't make the ridiculous claim that those who played the game are dreading the upcoming season. In fact they understand what painful things are to come and are nonetheless looking forward to seeing those things in live action. The only opinions that bother me are those that are stand as objective facts not as in my opinion or speaking for myself.
Season 1 ended exactly where the 1st game also ended, so season 2 will be from the 2nd game only, but it has already been alluded to, that they are going for at least a season 2 + a season 3 based on the 2nd game, and that the structure and chronology is going to make season 2 different from the game, while the story itself will be much the same.
It’s all subjective in the end, but I very much disagree with Kathy’s perspective on the 2nd game. “Terrible decisions” is a pretty blanket statement and really up to the eye of the beholder. Hope Mark and Burk keep an open mind.
@@CinemondoPodcast it’ll be good to go back to it now after the initial emotions are passed. I don’t know if the second playthrough will change your mind about the choices - from other discussions, opinions really depend on what you find to be foundational to TLOU (e.g. more character-based vs thematic or vice versa) - but at the very least you’ll have more perspective on the full story. No problem if you still disagree with their choices by the end, but thankfully it worked for me.
Not going to lie, she contradicted herself lol, first she said they made terrible decisions but later said she can't speak on the game because she didn't finish it. She should've at least finished the game to really know what the story was about. Just because they made a choice about a character at the beginning of the game doesn't mean it's a bad decision. They made it for a reason which by the end of the story you kind of know the meaning behind it is.
The terrible decision they made colored the game for me. I walked away from it rightfully. But i am hearing so many good things i am willing to give it another go!
First of Kathy. Before you give a review of a piece of work, Make sure you complete it to view the complete narrative vision of the story. It’s not fair to judge something that’s halfway done and create an opinion to sway away people from ever giving it a try. People worked years on it, So it should at least be judged honestly by finishing it.
Apparently they are splitting Season 2 into 2 parts, so will probably follow Joel, Ellie, Dina, Tommy and Jessies part, then parallel side to Abby, also the flash backs in the game can stretch this out for 2 seasons. Also they are probably gonna reveal The Last of Us 3 at the Game awards, so it may all tie in to them being able to start filming or at least planning for Season 3 of the tv series too and not having us have to wait 3-4 years for the 3rd Season
It is a shame you quite palying TLOU part 2. The second game is even better than the first one. They didn't make ANY bad decisions. Every choice they made was for a reason that was in service to the story. From what I understand, game two will take two to three seasons to cover in the show. There is also a third game I believe in the works, so another 2-3 seasons of the show can be expected.
@@CinemondoPodcast What would the "big mistake" be? The story was brilliant, for all the comments mentioned. It was a moral dichotomy between virtuous actions and malevolent deeds, on both sides. So, if your entire argument is "I'm mad Joel died," then you need to have it pulled out of you. It is crucial for the story, for Elle, Tommy, Dina, Abby, and all the others.
Part two is a story that you absoutely need to finish, and then ponder what just happened and the reasons why for a bit. After connecting the dots, if someone gave me a chance to rewrite it, I'd do it all over again ;-)
@@CinemondoPodcast Not the major beats and structure. I would give Abby more interesting hobbies than coin collecting and eating protein. I'd explain why she's a miserable person unless she's with Lev, and make her question the WLF life much more. Basically blend her character and Owen's to make her a less shitty person that is actually relatable
@@tRexArmXtender SPOILERS since she very obviously quit close around the 2 hour mark of the game...: The coin collecting is something she took over from her father to honor him. The "eating protein" aka buffing up is also very much explained. She's obsessed with Joel and uses the training to cope with her trauma and to prepare herself for when she will find him, to the point where she drives away her friends and kills her relationship with Owen. It's completely obvious why she's miserable when you enter her part of the game, since you literally see it happening. lol It's also fairly obvious why Lev seem to help heal her, because they very obviously draw a huge parallel here with Joel & Ellie.
Both games are masterpieces. I understand why someone may not like it, but saying it was "bad writing and bad decisions" is just wrong. I love the risk they took and the fact that they deviated from the typical "black & white" type of storytelling. It was ballsy and brilliantly executed!
Categorically disagree with Kathy's take on part 2. Yupp, there was a pretty harrowing moment and it was tough to push forward but the payoff was beautiful and it all comes full circle. Kathy, now that some time has passed since the peak of the outrage, you should definitely give it a chance. It sounds like they are spreading part 2 over at least 2 seasons though...
It's worth giving 2 another shot after some distance. I strongly disagree respectfully. Part II is my favorite game of all time, and I think it's an absolute masterpiece, I was so moved by the time I finished it the first time
The first game ended exactly as the first season ended. That's over with. Abby is the second protagonist that you play as in The last of Us part 2. You play as Abby for half of the game. She is not an amalgamation of other characters. She plays a gigantic role in the first half of the game and is the protagonist in the second half. She will be the star of season 3
@@CinemondoPodcast I just thought that the second game had a lot of common sense, taking into account the highly harmful context and the decisions made by each character. The big thing, that you (Kathy) and many other people didn't like, in my view, was very predictable... not to mention that it opens up a very strong line that can be addressed in the third game.
She's one of the haters who could not cope with the reality and consequences that were absolutely on point. By the sound of it she literally dropped the game within the first couple of hours, while the full game is about 30-40 hours long. Part 2 is way better than Part 1, but people like her can't handle it and thus claim that it sucks. Part 2 is the only game that ever affected me to such a degree on a personal level in all of the decades of playing video games so far. No other game made me think about its story, characters and happenings 24/7 for a full month. It popped into my head when idling, it prevented me from falling asleep when in bed, it made me dream about it when I finally did, and it was the first thing in my mind when I woke up again - before even opening my eyes. Claiming that the game is bad is just a shit take because a bad game would not be able to do that. Also, calling Joel selfless? Dude went through almost two decades of being a pos bandit who murdered innocent people, and then sacrificed humanity in order to turn Ellie into a replacement Sarah.
@@CinemondoPodcast It made you not want to know why she did it? Why her eyes were so full of hate? Why she knew his full name - even before we did? Like, the initial feelings for her are obviously intended, but I feel some people never managed to emotionally get past it. Just like some people somehow see Joel as a saint or role model, even though he was just like the many people you murder throughout the first game. To get a little off topic but... May I ask whether you had to unfilter my comment or something? Because I'm pretty sure it was not there when I checked with a private tab, unlike my reply to someone here. I just can't make sense of YT eating my comments all the time, even some very high effort ones, which is incredibly frustrating.
I am not going to tell you what to think but I will say not to make an opinion until you finish the game. If you left where I think you did you missed the best parts of the game and you did not even get to encounter the best characters in the game. I agree the game is hard to play because of how much you love these character but if you can stick through it you might surprise yourself by how much you end up loving it in the end. When discussing the game it might be good to not be so negative because you might be poisoning the well for the people you watch these shows with. Kind of like how the negative "reviews" of others stopped you from finishing it.
I disagree with her. 100% the 2nd game is a true masterpiece and a work of art. it's a realistic view on what a world would look like if it would to fall as it did.

There is comfort in that
It’s all subjective in the end, but I very much disagree with Kathy’s perspective on the 2nd game. “Terrible decisions” is a pretty blanket statement and really up to the eye of the beholder. Hope Mark and Burk keep an open mind.
They wont play it but i will! Gonna go back!
Seriously
Talking about the trailer context of the trailer and major plot point
Apparently they are splitting Season 2 into 2 parts, so will probably follow Joel, Ellie, Dina, Tommy and Jessies part, then parallel side to Abby, also the flash backs in the game can stretch this out for 2 seasons. Also they are probably gonna reveal The Last of Us 3 at the Game awards, so it may all tie in to them being able to start filming or at least planning for Season 3 of the tv series too and not having us have to wait 3-4 years for the 3rd Season
I am very encouraged by this! Thank you for bringing me hope!
They made one big mistake but maybe they pulled out if it
@@CinemondoPodcast What would the "big mistake" be? The story was brilliant, for all the comments mentioned. It was a moral dichotomy between virtuous actions and malevolent deeds, on both sides. So, if your entire argument is "I'm mad Joel died," then you need to have it pulled out of you. It is crucial for the story, for Elle, Tommy, Dina, Abby, and all the others.
Part two is a story that you absoutely need to finish, and then ponder what just happened and the reasons why for a bit. After connecting the dots, if someone gave me a chance to rewrite it, I'd do it all over again ;-)
You wouldn’t change anything!?
@@CinemondoPodcast Not the major beats and structure. I would give Abby more interesting hobbies than coin collecting and eating protein. I'd explain why she's a miserable person unless she's with Lev, and make her question the WLF life much more. Basically blend her character and Owen's to make her a less shitty person that is actually relatable
@@tRexArmXtender SPOILERS since she very obviously quit close around the 2 hour mark of the game...:
The coin collecting is something she took over from her father to honor him. The "eating protein" aka buffing up is also very much explained. She's obsessed with Joel and uses the training to cope with her trauma and to prepare herself for when she will find him, to the point where she drives away her friends and kills her relationship with Owen.
It's completely obvious why she's miserable when you enter her part of the game, since you literally see it happening. lol
It's also fairly obvious why Lev seem to help heal her, because they very obviously draw a huge parallel here with Joel & Ellie.
Both games are masterpieces. I understand why someone may not like it, but saying it was "bad writing and bad decisions" is just wrong. I love the risk they took and the fact that they deviated from the typical "black & white" type of storytelling. It was ballsy and brilliantly executed!
i dunno... but I will go back in and try the game! Just going off what friends told me!
its actually season 2 and 3.. the second game was confirmed to be split into season 2 and 3
Categorically disagree with Kathy's take on part 2.
I will do it! Thank you for your encouragement!!
It's worth giving 2 another shot after some distance. I strongly disagree respectfully. Part II is my favorite game of all time, and I think it's an absolute masterpiece, I was so moved by the time I finished it the first time
Wholeheartedly agree with part 1 - also my fave game of all time. Close second is Elden Ring and Bloodborne!
I didn't want to be Abby!
@@CinemondoPodcast No one did. But it was a bold move and opened my eyes to the power of perspective
The second game for me was way better than the first... lmao.
Tou are the first person i have heard say that!
@@CinemondoPodcast
I just thought that the second game had a lot of common sense, taking into account the highly harmful context and the decisions made by each character. The big thing, that you (Kathy) and many other people didn't like, in my view, was very predictable... not to mention that it opens up a very strong line that can be addressed in the third game.
@@CinemondoPodcast There are lots of people in your comments that already said that
Nosferatu official trailer reaction? It's already dropped
Second game was sooo good, really disagree with her, they made bold decisions based on a theme, and it was Glorious!!!
They should change nothing!!!
Will try again but still disagree with what they did
She's one of the haters who could not cope with the reality and consequences that were absolutely on point.
I didin't like the plot turn - that's it! But wanna go try again tho the prospect of playing Abby bums me out
@@CinemondoPodcast It made you not want to know why she did it?
First!! Daniel lim here
Hellloooooooo!
Going back in!
