This is Why They Call It Death Wobble

  • GoPro footage of the front suspension of my 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ experiencing the dreaded "Death Wobble". I shot this footage to help troubleshoot the root cause. It turned out to be a combination of worn tie rod ends and a wallowed out axle-side track bar mount. New tie rod ends and a custom washer welded to the mount resolved it.

    Update: replaced drag link and tie rod due to worn ends. disconnected track bar at the axle and sure enough, the hole had wallowed out a bit. Replaced the bolt with a larger diameter bolt and added some heavy duty washers. Next trip I'll weld the washers to the bracket.

      Hey man, I have a Jeep Wrangler X 2008 and it was doing this. Changed everything that it could have possibly been. The last thing I changed was the tires and that worked. It was because on tire was "out of shape" (lack of a better word) and wouldn't stand up on its own. Switched to retread mud tires from Treadwright. That isn't a plug for the company. It just worked out like that.

      So you solved this 100 issue by buying a twenty thousand dollar used vehicle that isn’t even in the same league? Seems legit. For the price of your land cruiser you could have built a prerunner Cherokee with a stoker 4.6 or LS swap. Your land cruiser, I’d made after the 90s, through a a check engine light, you’ll be staring at your ABS and VSC lights too. Have fun replacing your timing belt every 100k whether it’s messed up or not. Converters are about 800 each. Heated oxygen sensors fail every other year. They eat brake calipers, they crack radiators, the power steering pumps leak frequently, the manifold gaskets leak as soon as you hit first puddle. Gimme a break. A land rouser is a parking lot princess for soccer moms. What guys use cherokees for you would never destroy your land cruiser trying

    The beauty of death wobble is that it is super easy to fix and you can talk some down on a price very easily. I once got a gorgeous XJ with death wobble. A price of $5000, was being asked. I went over and turned on the engine and checked everything. Everything worked excellently. Then th owner told me to tqk it for a ride but keep it under a certain speed to avoid a small misfire. I took it past the speed and the death rattle kicked in. Then I knew I was going to get it for almost nothing. I took it home for $1000 and put in a 4 inch suspension lift that got rid of all the old junk in the front anyway. I still have that 99 XJ today on 33 inch tyres and with a later added Edelbrock cylinder head that someone gave me free! By the way, of course I kept the legendary stock cylinder head. 2000 was a poor year for the stock AMC 242ci I6 cylinder head.

    A friend had a late 80s or early 90s GMC 2500 4x4 truck that would get into a crazy death wobble. Turns out the upper ball joint on those Dana 60s is forced into a conical seat by a heavy duty coil spring. Over time that spring sags, loses force, and is no longer able to keep the BJ fully seated. The result is the BJ popping in/out of its seat - resulting in loss of positive control of the kingpin angle. The fix? installing a new spring and conical seat. Easy peasy. But boy, when that thing did the death wobble - you thought you were about to die.

    I remember working on the front end of a Dodge Charger when I used to work at a body shop. Two links were the lower control setup which also were used as the steering components. We had to "burp" the power steering system after replacing some parts of the system, and the front end worked its way to one side. Don't know what made Chrysler think having suspension components also work as steering components was a good idea, especially on a high performance vehicle

      I actually had a guy bring me his vw based dune buggy (not a sand rail, a vw bug with a fiberglass body) because he took it to the vw dealership in Flagstaff AZ for a steering issue. They replaced the king pin bushings (with a hydrolic press) but obviously forgot (or didn't know to) ream the bushings after installing them in the vehicle, but before inserting the pins (german engineering, ensures the two bushings inner holes are perfectly aligned for the pin to move freely with no play) Result was a vehicle that the worlds stongest man could not have turned the steering wheel on, and the dealership told him to just drive it a bit and it will loosen up..... took me 2 days to get them back apart using a huge vice, a 6 ft iron pipe on the vice handle, an 8 ft bar out of the other end of the pipe, and a torch to heat the outside enough to get it to expand enough to move 1/32nd of an inch each try with me jumping up and down on the end of the 8ft bar... happened around 1989.

    A big thing with the death wobble was because the steering and live axle setup is excellent for heavy duty applications for trucks and the twisting articulation you can get for off roading but because of that you loose higher speed stability. While yes better materials and structural design make it harder to get the death wobble but it’s all the same it’s a old tech that has its advantages but also disadvantages.... and yes a upgraded steering damper or doubling the damper helps but also have your alignment checked because if the wheels aren’t straight that also increases the chance of the wobble occurring the higher your speed.

    Seen bad sleeves, bushings and loose rivets or cracked brackets too.

    So.. Why *_do_* they call it a death wobble?

    • @Michael-1337
      @Michael-1337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Because it can induce a rather violent "wobble" in the vehicle as the suspension rapidly shifts left and right under the vehicle. It can cause the driver to lose control at highway speeds and it can occur very suddenly. This is why it is never a good idea to buy a cheap after market suspension kit that isn't properly engineered. Also it can be symptom of an improperly maintained suspension and a single event of death wobble means the whole suspension system will need to be serviced asap because it further damages the suspension making the death wobble occur more frequently. Here is a link to an article from a jeep engineer describing how death wobble happens www.allpar.com/SUVs/jeep/death-wobble.html

      Thats cute and all Red Phoenix, but you getting all hot and bothered about a post doesn't make it a shit post, and considering the fact that Ive made every repair to every car in my family for the last decade, I would say I've got a pretty good handle on normal wear and tear. Btw, is it really so hard to write in a logically consistent manner? I mean, "as penny pinching endangering people" is just woefully sloppy syntax, and "He cannot tell normal wear and tear from an idiot proof car" simple doesn't follow logically. Are you sure you didn't mean "He cannot tell normal wear and tear from negligent design"? That would a least make a modicum of sense. Perhaps you should take a few sips of coffee before you start typing and then read it out loud to yourself before you hit the reply button. It will help you hide that room temp IQ and all those delicate sensibilities you have about buying a shitty brand of vehicle. lol Jokers and time wasters indeed.

    actually the term " Death wobble" is a motorcycle term and if you have ever been on a motorcycle going any speed above 30mph and go into a "true death wobble", you will never forget why they call it that. your front wheel starts the DW and then if you do not come out of it, the back wheel traction will eventually brake loose and it will start wheel hopping side to side, and then chances are you will go for a ride on the road because the force will throw you off the bike. somewhat like a bucking bull but side to side. that is a true death wobble.

Rusty's tie rod, Rubicon Express adjustable track bar, Detroit ball joints, were the formula to a smooth ride. While I was there I replaced noisy wheel bearing, added Rough Country rubber spring isolators to quiet the ride. Before putting it all together, I used marine black paint for undercoating.
