Gokul is a legend and thanks for getting him on. This specific podcast reminded me why I stopped being a regular to this channel. It is not because of questions or guest or quality of content but there is so much chalk and drag latent in the show that I want to share my thoughts fwiw. 1. Lacks visual packaging. At best it’s done as a lazy zoom call at work 2. Sriram voice time versus guest. We come here to listen the guest speak not Sriram. As one example around 40min here Sriram talks literally for 10min before asking a Q, when he could have easily been a lot less wordy. I notice this every show. Many times spending too much time his experience n then ask the quest about theirs 3. Reduce your options just ask questions. Again, sorry Srirams opinions matter when he is guest on another show. Pretty high drag to wait for his questions coming after his opinions. 4. Very limited appeal to international audience. I feel like the show is unnecessarily tweaked to suit Indian audience. I share because I care. Hope this helps
Amazing insights from Gokul. He shared the mental model of an unpopular decision to move from FB to Square at the peak of his career. Time to time again, hearing the regret minimization framework (from Bezos to gokul), shows how the framework is powerful.
Thanks for this insight on career. I thought of not having a family initially to build something(rather make someone successful). It doesn't makes sense now
Missing the entrepreneurial point I think, in terms of always aiming for a home run hit. One could always bridge a gap in the market, that has a market opportunity of $10B (or thrown in some number big enough number here) and still be super successful.
will all due respect, I disagree with Gokul about "Tiles do not matter", if future employees are not able to negotiate, its not good for them and founders should know and have a vision for the team members growth too, obviously as he points out its always grey so on the other side, if companies are getting too much into title games and not executing, they will eventually fail. So this is also a grey area and choosing one particular side is just not a correct answer. Furthermore can a company be without a CEO? So, CEO is also a title, so it may not matter to the company and the founders, it would matter to team members and so a balance has to be struck in this regards too.
Gokul is a legend. His ability to not talk in absolutes and willingness to share his learnings at ease are priceless. Thanks much for the interview.
Want to thank Gokul Rajaram for this conversation we have wanted to do for a long time.
