I too was very nervous about all the iconography in Anachrony. But it has gotten to the point where the iconography is seriously one of the most satisfying parts of actually play. I guess when you are fluent in the hieroglyphics you can understand with a brief glance what new cards from expansions do. It is so tight and thoughtful and on anachrony's merits alone I am not worried about deciphering voidfall. I trust the pedigree.
Great video and well-explained reasons. For me, the deluxe isn't really about the minis (honestly I'd prefer without them) but the triple-layer hexes and playerboards and the metal components. I own Trickerion and Anachrony CE and the quality and variety is just amazing.
Reason 4 & 5 strike home here. While I love deluxification, I can't currently justify the price. As for reason 4, I have one player (11 yr old) who will memorize the cards, the iconography and which combinations are best for every situation, then proceed to make game decisions quickly, one AP player who will not be able to remember the iconography and will have to look it up each time and me who is somewhere in between. Just the perfect mix for an ulcer. Thanks for helping me resist.
$449 on amazon!? Profit is evidently one reason someone backed it. I came too late to back it, so got the retail version and then bought the triple layered player board sleeves, and the miniatures and Folded Spaces organizer. I'm in it now for little over $200. Just wish I could have the layered hex tiles.
Agree that a lot of heavy euro games are coming out with lots of iconography to digest along with the basic turn and round structure. Then there are the actions and multiple things to bookkeep. The more abstract the iconography, the less useful it is to me and less accessible the game. That plus the fact that my collection is filled with rarely used 3 or 4x games, makes me hesitant to back either Fractal or Voidfall. There's plenty of game in TI4 and Eclipse and others, but I'm still looking forward to seeing more reviews and the final product once both are finally released.
Great summary - I'm running with Fractal atm. But wanted both - the hype for mindclash is real and I'd love to see how many people out of 9k+ actually end up playing it regularly. I watched a gameplay with the devs and oh my goodness... I also hate that it's advertised as 4X ... 100% euro.
Haha, yeah even reading through it I kept on thinking ... where's the 4x!? I kept forgetting to call it 4X, it just is so far from that in my head, haha. Which for me is a great thing because I like Euros more than 4x anyway, or rather it's easier to get my group to play them.

They knocked the solo mode out of the park with Anachrony. Hopefully voidfall is fun solo. Backing because i know if I like it, just like anacrony I will be wishing i had all the pretty little peices which helps with immersion and enjoyment at least for me. I remain a backer!
I was lucky enough to demo it in Essen last weekend and honestly it lives to the hype so I felt validated in my backing. Only played a round, but it was deep and I could see the replayability with both coop and single player mode. But I'm glad you're giving a nuanced look at all those people whom haven't have a chance to actually try it.
Awesome, I love to hear that. I feel like this is one of those games that if I did get to demo and have someone explain it to me, it would be MUCH harder to resist. I'm excited to play it eventually, haha.
@@RoomandBoardReviews buddy of mine was there with me and he was on the fence and after the demo he pulled out his phone and backed it right away. Plus the theme and artwork felt like a mesh between Foundation and Sins of a Solar Empire, totally my jam. Hehe.
I love everything about both of these games, but you’re right - I’ll rarely get them to the table if my other heavier games are any indication. The collector in me wages war with the pragmatist. Maybe I’ll just procrastinate with that dollar pledge. 🇨🇦
I'm not backing either Voidfall or Fractal, and I'm not planning on picking them up at retail. I seriously considered both, but the FOMO didn't win. Voidfall is interesting just because it comes from Mindclash. Fractal is interesting because it promises the whole 4x experience in a shorter time. I can withstand the temptation because I got the Anachrony Infinity box some months ago and I haven't even had the time to transfer the base game into it.
I’m fine with all the iconography because it makes it less language-dependent. I’m an English speaker but many games aren’t accessible unless you speak one of four European languages, so I’m willing to go the extra mile and learn the iconography for a game when it means someone who doesn’t speak a specific language gets a chance to enjoy it too
Fully backed Fractal Beyond the Void and pledged £1 for Voidfall. I have Anachrony and I only played it twice because of the iconography. I met Tuczi at a convention and really admire the guy but Voidfall has far too many icons.
Another great video in this series! I will be getting Fractal and taking a second look at Voidfall once it hits retail. I don't need the deluxe components for a game that I will struggle to convince my wife to play
Wow.... Talk about putting things in perspective.... You really made me think - as I own Eclipse 2nd Dawn, pledged for Anunnaki and The Great Wall already, I probably have my big 4X, and a shorter 4X coming. The only move from here is to get a bigger game - Twilight Imperium 4th:)
Right now I am backing Voidfall, just played it last night on TTS and had fun but got destroyed because there is so much going on I didn't know how to play efficiently, but I am excited to play it again. I am playing Fractal on TTS next week to be able to compare. I have $1 in on the Fractal campaign to get updates and upgrade my pledge if I like it over Voidfall. Euro style of Voidfall definitely appeals to me more. And when you get the campaign of Fractal, suddenly they become the same price. In fact if you get the campaign and the automata it ends up being more expensive for lower quality components on Fractal. But the thing that matters is the gameplay and I will find out next week which one I want to play again more.
This is the first one of these since I started watching your channel that I really didn’t need. I read the manual and… wow. I only wish I had the time to be playing a super complicated 4 hour game on the regular. I read Fractal too and it’s much more approachable, tempting. But you gotta admit the two color Voidborn minis are pretty slick!

Yup getting both, that's obviously the way to go. But mostly because I know I will play voidfall solo, but since you don't want to play solo you should just get fractal.
I don't own Eclipse and haven't yet played it, but I have looked into it a bit. I think they're likely different enough, I feel like Voidfall is going to heavily skew towards the Euro side of things with a battle element. But I guess it depends how much you get your bigger games out and how often you'd like to devote to the both. But mechanically I think Voidfall will have more min/max euro elements to it that should help set it apart. This is just theorizing though.
As I mentioned in another comment here, Cerebria is easily one of the toughest to learn/teach games that I have ever encountered, and yet it is so worthwhile when you get past those barriers to entry. It is unique, as there are not many team based area control games and it works. I say this because Voidfall looks like it will be a beast to grok at first and yet ultimately it will end up being worth it to play. Mindclash has yet to fail me and I am excited to see this one on my table, even if it breaks my brain learning it.
That's awesome :) Yeah, it definitely seems like it rewards that dedication, I love that sort of thing. Mindclash have always been ones that I'm excited to look out for and try whenever I get the chance. I just like it when someone else teaches it to me first haha ;)
@@RoomandBoardReviews 100%. I learned Trickerion and Anachrony at the table from other players, but did eventually have to teach Trickerion. Having had to teach Cerebria, it is somewhat of a stressful teach and for once starting with the basic game and adding things on subsequent plays is the best answer.
Love it, but a difference b/t Voidfall and Fractal (and what stopped me from backing Fractal) is you have to purchase another $34 US to get the solo mode...that is pretty crappy, IMO. Thank you for the Voidfall reasons, I'm going to wait for retail...
"I'm too tired for this rulebook" is my personal catchphrase! And also the reason I don't have this one on my list as a back. I love the idea of it more than actually owning it. Mindclash does some great games though...but no one is sitting around for what is likely going to end up being 6 hours for a first play of this lol
Beast is definitely one I'm excited to look into. I probably won't end up getting just gut feeling because my girlfriend doesn't like hidden movement games, but from my initial look into it I think it looks pretty neat
Very Good points! TH-camr need content, therefore need to learn rulebooks regular, i can totally understand that this will burn the brain, i got already a tough time learning just one game (but properly) so i really understand its elements. We just got into board games recently and like my video game collection, i decided to do everything with the same routine. Get the very best, play everything, get rid of what you may dislike after all and know all there is to know before making judgement and, very important, keep it in a scale that you can handle with ease, therefore we want to get around 20 games and sell everything that didn't impress or hit the table regular and keep the rest while never feel the need to look at the rulebook ever again. I believe, this is the optimum, that works at least for me. But most of our games will be very complex because of that as well. Very good video to state those points and make it understandable.
Nice, that's a cool way to go about it. I like the idea of adding it in with the purpose to sell it if it doesn't sit well. I find whenever I get a game, a little less so now, but it usually stays on my shelf for a long time even if I don't like it because I'm always afraid I'll miss something.
Hahah, I'm glad I laughed at it too. I know! I just grabbed it to get the same handle right now, but I end up spending so much time on the youtube sphere that I always forget to post anything on Instagram. I should just start taking pictures of the games I play at least.

Next month is the third anniversary of my Tainted Grail Pledge and i am still waiting for it, while others even can't remember the rules anymore. So, one reason not to back is, that it might take forever to arrive at your home, while you want it NOW.

Although I hope I won't have to grind too much, but I am severely in a bad position right now so might need to take a whole session to try and heal. I still haven't opened anachrony infinity box,either, lol. I played a friend's copy twice. She said it took like 4 hours to open and sort everything... and both of our games took 7 hours, lol. Its great but man... you might have convinced me. Fractal being supposedly half the time to play might be the key for which one to back
Yeah definitely a huge draw for Fractal over Voidfall is that time element. Being inclined to play it/being able to pull it out when you haven't set aside designated time is a huge factor.
Goodness me make some playlists please! I don't like the complex euros that I feel are complex for complexities sake rather than for thematic reasons so 5 4 3 for me. I'll try it on TTS as it might be a good bet for coop and solo then wait for retail.

I was really interested in Fractal, mostly due to liking their previous game, X-Odus, but I went for Mythwind and no budget for anything else. Voidfall is a game I like in theory but I'm sure the length and complexity mean I'd pass over playing it over and over to table something else. Like Empires of the Void 2, which is quite approachable and a lot of fun. I also already own that. I also own Warpgate, and Sovereign Skies. All games I'd probably play instead. I also owned and sold Twilight Imperium 4th without ever playing it, so why would I think Voidfall is going to be different than that?
Yeah, super legit. I do think Voidfall is so euro and will be better than Twilight Imperium (although I'm really not a Twilight Imperium fan, just didn't land in the way I was hoping and hyped for), but in terms of getting it to the table and being ready to access it, I agree completely.
In addition to reason #1, you might have inserted you backed Stellaris Late Pledge which by last count collected more $ than both Fractal and Voidfall combined. Perhaps too soon to say that since their campaigns aren't over and we don't know how many backers pledged Stellaris and one or both of these new 4 x games too. Yes Eclipse is a good option now but there are a few others Xia, GMT's Star Empires 4x, Twilight Imperium, etc. I would prefer though to take an existing game like AVH's Civ/999's Western/Eastern Empires into the 4x realm of space exploration or planet colonization (or both).
I'm backing FRACTAL BEYOND DE VOID. I think that each faction is pretty unique (Lorewise and gameplay), the information in the campaign is pretty clear and this game hit all the 4 Xs. Backed All in!
Nice - yeah I'm super impressed with the layout and the clarity of the Fractal campaign page. Really gives a great sense of how the game feels and if you'll like it. Either that or great marketing, haha.

As a solo player I"ve backed Voidfall. I had a look at Fractal as well, but it seems to me they added a solo in the end of the development. Sure it looks good, but you can not play the campaign for instance. And I like the solo games designed by David Turczi. To me Fractal has one +, but Voidfall has three +'s.
Yeah great point! I've heard Anachrony's solo mode is really good, and in all likelihood will be how I play that one for the first little bit. Not being able to do the campaign solo really detracts I think.
Well none of those apply to me really, so I’m safe to back it. :) Seriously though I think Voidfall will be great, and I don’t have a lot of games like it. Spirit Island is probably the closest.

Sorry Chris, you already made me pass Arydia :D... I just can't pass it. And my reason is the deluxified version of this game. I usually say deluxified components don't make a game more enjoyable, but I think this game is an exception.I really like the triple layered board, it just makes the game so smoth and more intuitive (as well as the player boards), just as I liked the double layered boards with Scythe, it just makes the game more intuitive to play and teach. Also a lot of fellow Hungarians were on this project as the designer David Turczi, so that is another reason for me. Funnily enough I can see this tabled more than Fractal, so the latter is a pass for me.
Sorry, you couldn’t help me. The deeper I delved, the more it took a hold of me. I tried, but now I’m in on this space euro! And Anachrony is still to come with Perserverance…

I'm skipping Voidfall and going with the Fractal:Beyond the Void KS, it's everything I'm looking for in a 4x game. I can always get Voidfall in retail later.
Eclipse is one of my favorite games of all time. It hits the table 1-2x per year with my group. For that reason, I’m skipping this. I don’t need 2 big 4x games in my collection that will compete with each other. But what about solo play? I’m a solo gamer primarily, so for that reason I backed Uprising. Do I need 3 4x games? Absolutely not.
I have a feeling that the developers will keep changing the game due to the complexity complaints. Which is good imo. Just watch any experienced board gamer play this online. So my 2 reasons. Expect delays and retail version will have fixed errata plus be cheaper. I'm going to back Fractal instead.
Have you played Cerebria? Learning and teaching the game is brutal, and yet the play experience is so rewarding once you get past the barrier to entry. With 9k folks backing this for over 1 million, I doubt they will change much. David Turzci is pretty meticulous in his designs and not a big crowdfund the game design type of guy. This game is designed to be the way it is, and with the success of the campaign, they are really not under any pressure to do anything other than release the game.
The game is so complicated. I’m afraid that I will play solo, then when I try to play with others I’m going to kill them because it’s hard to learn. I like voidfall deluxe because it’s beautiful.. the ships.. the enamel pins. I like fractal for the easier to teach and play and shorter time. But fractal isn’t as pretty, and I don’t like that solo cost extra and the campaign doesn’t work with solo play. I will most likely pass on both.
Yeah, that's a great point about solo and is always my worry. That's why I've stopped playing certain games on Board Game Arena, because then no one will want to play my copies in real life since the skill difference is so drastic.
Fair enough - I wanted to tread the line of talking about specific mechanics that got me excited, but also there are a bunch of how to plays out there so I figured I wouldn't necessarily rehash it in the best way, especially compared to those that have played the physical copy vs me just reading the rulebook. But I was a little lighter on the mechanics of this one than usual, mainly just because it's hard to distill down to keep the video under 30 minutes. I still think mentioning the retail comparison vs Mindclash's history is valid to those who haven't gotten a Mindclash game before it though, which is why I mentioned it.
The look of Voidfall turned me off. Space hexes covered in cubes and dice where you can barely see there might be a planet in the middle. It looks too much like a game and not like a theme. I'd happily back Fractal but there are too many $200 Canadian games dropping out of the sky on kickstarter so I must let wisdom prevail.
I don’t think this counts as a 4x. There isn’t an explore feature since the map is fully revealed. This is another negative since they are marketing it a 4x game. All you’re doing is expanding, exploiting and exterminating.

Haha, yeah that combo with this game sounds ulcer inducing for sure. And I agree, that deluxification bump is just too much of a leap for me.

I don't own Eclipse and haven't yet played it, but I have looked into it a bit. I think they're likely different enough, I feel like Voidfall is going to heavily skew towards the Euro side of things with a battle element. But I guess it depends how much you get your bigger games out and how often you'd like to devote to the both. But mechanically I think Voidfall will have more min/max euro elements to it that should help set it apart. This is just theorizing though.
As I mentioned in another comment here, Cerebria is easily one of the toughest to learn/teach games that I have ever encountered, and yet it is so worthwhile when you get past those barriers to entry. It is unique, as there are not many team based area control games and it works. I say this because Voidfall looks like it will be a beast to grok at first and yet ultimately it will end up being worth it to play. Mindclash has yet to fail me and I am excited to see this one on my table, even if it breaks my brain learning it.
That's awesome :) Yeah, it definitely seems like it rewards that dedication, I love that sort of thing. Mindclash have always been ones that I'm excited to look out for and try whenever I get the chance. I just like it when someone else teaches it to me first haha ;)
@@RoomandBoardReviews 100%. I learned Trickerion and Anachrony at the table from other players, but did eventually have to teach Trickerion. Having had to teach Cerebria, it is somewhat of a stressful teach and for once starting with the basic game and adding things on subsequent plays is the best answer.
Love it, but a difference b/t Voidfall and Fractal (and what stopped me from backing Fractal) is you have to purchase another $34 US to get the solo mode...that is pretty crappy, IMO. Thank you for the Voidfall reasons, I'm going to wait for retail...
Well if they would include it from the beginning, then the price would also bei higher. I think it is neet to exclude it, if you do Not Play solo
"I'm too tired for this rulebook" is my personal catchphrase! And also the reason I don't have this one on my list as a back. I love the idea of it more than actually owning it. Mindclash does some great games though...but no one is sitting around for what is likely going to end up being 6 hours for a first play of this lol

Beast is definitely one I'm excited to look into. I probably won't end up getting just gut feeling because my girlfriend doesn't like hidden movement games, but from my initial look into it I think it looks pretty neat

TH-camr need content, therefore need to learn rulebooks regular, i can totally understand that this will burn the brain, i got already a tough time learning just one game (but properly) so i really understand its elements.
We just got into board games recently and like my video game collection, i decided to do everything with the same routine. Get the very best, play everything, get rid of what you may dislike after all and know all there is to know before making judgement and, very important, keep it in a scale that you can handle with ease, therefore we want to get around 20 games and sell everything that didn't impress or hit the table regular and keep the rest while never feel the need to look at the rulebook ever again. I believe, this is the optimum, that works at least for me. But most of our games will be very complex because of that as well.

Nice, that's a cool way to go about it. I like the idea of adding it in with the purpose to sell it if it doesn't sit well. I find whenever I get a game, a little less so now, but it usually stays on my shelf for a long time even if I don't like it because I'm always afraid I'll miss something.

Next month is the third anniversary of my Tainted Grail Pledge and i am still waiting for it, while others even can't remember the rules anymore. So, one reason not to back is, that it might take forever to arrive at your home, while you want it NOW.

I still haven't opened anachrony infinity box,either, lol. I played a friend's copy twice. She said it took like 4 hours to open and sort everything... and both of our games took 7 hours, lol. Its great but man... you might have convinced me. Fractal being supposedly half the time to play might be the key for which one to back
Yeah definitely a huge draw for Fractal over Voidfall is that time element. Being inclined to play it/being able to pull it out when you haven't set aside designated time is a huge factor.

I don't like the complex euros that I feel are complex for complexities sake rather than for thematic reasons so 5 4 3 for me. I'll try it on TTS as it might be a good bet for coop and solo then wait for retail.

I was really interested in Fractal, mostly due to liking their previous game, X-Odus, but I went for Mythwind and no budget for anything else.
Voidfall is a game I like in theory but I'm sure the length and complexity mean I'd pass over playing it over and over to table something else. Like Empires of the Void 2, which is quite approachable and a lot of fun. I also already own that. I also own Warpgate, and Sovereign Skies. All games I'd probably play instead. I also owned and sold Twilight Imperium 4th without ever playing it, so why would I think Voidfall is going to be different than that?
Yeah, super legit. I do think Voidfall is so euro and will be better than Twilight Imperium (although I'm really not a Twilight Imperium fan, just didn't land in the way I was hoping and hyped for), but in terms of getting it to the table and being ready to access it, I agree completely.

In addition to reason #1, you might have inserted you backed Stellaris Late Pledge which by last count collected more $ than both Fractal and Voidfall combined. Perhaps too soon to say that since their campaigns aren't over and we don't know how many backers pledged Stellaris and one or both of these new 4 x games too. Yes Eclipse is a good option now but there are a few others Xia, GMT's Star Empires 4x, Twilight Imperium, etc. I would prefer though to take an existing game like AVH's Civ/999's Western/Eastern Empires into the 4x realm of space exploration or planet colonization (or both).
I absolutely love the ships and the theme. I’m just not sure I like the crushingly complex gameplay.

I'm backing FRACTAL BEYOND DE VOID.
I think that each faction is pretty unique (Lorewise and gameplay), the information in the campaign is pretty clear and this game hit all the 4 Xs. Backed All in!
Nice - yeah I'm super impressed with the layout and the clarity of the Fractal campaign page. Really gives a great sense of how the game feels and if you'll like it. Either that or great marketing, haha.

As a solo player I"ve backed Voidfall. I had a look at Fractal as well, but it seems to me they added a solo in the end of the development. Sure it looks good, but you can not play the campaign for instance. And I like the solo games designed by David Turczi. To me Fractal has one +, but Voidfall has three +'s.
Yeah great point! I've heard Anachrony's solo mode is really good, and in all likelihood will be how I play that one for the first little bit. Not being able to do the campaign solo really detracts I think.

Sorry Chris, you already made me pass Arydia :D... I just can't pass it. And my reason is the deluxified version of this game. I usually say deluxified components don't make a game more enjoyable, but I think this game is an exception.I really like the triple layered board, it just makes the game so smoth and more intuitive (as well as the player boards), just as I liked the double layered boards with Scythe, it just makes the game more intuitive to play and teach. Also a lot of fellow Hungarians were on this project as the designer David Turczi, so that is another reason for me.
Funnily enough I can see this tabled more than Fractal, so the latter is a pass for me.
Sorry, you couldn’t help me. The deeper I delved, the more it took a hold of me. I tried, but now I’m in on this space euro!

I'm skipping Voidfall and going with the Fractal:Beyond the Void KS, it's everything I'm looking for in a 4x game. I can always get Voidfall in retail later.
Eclipse is one of my favorite games of all time. It hits the table 1-2x per year with my group. For that reason, I’m skipping this. I don’t need 2 big 4x games in my collection that will compete with each other.
But what about solo play? I’m a solo gamer primarily, so for that reason I backed Uprising. Do I need 3 4x games? Absolutely not.

I am not tempted because I don't even have Eclipse 2nd dawn, a game I know is good. Its just been out of print for so long...
I have a feeling that the developers will keep changing the game due to the complexity complaints. Which is good imo. Just watch any experienced board gamer play this online.
So my 2 reasons. Expect delays and retail version will have fixed errata plus be cheaper.

Have you played Cerebria? Learning and teaching the game is brutal, and yet the play experience is so rewarding once you get past the barrier to entry. With 9k folks backing this for over 1 million, I doubt they will change much. David Turzci is pretty meticulous in his designs and not a big crowdfund the game design type of guy. This game is designed to be the way it is, and with the success of the campaign, they are really not under any pressure to do anything other than release the game.
Another reason not to back is if you've backed Stellaris by Academy Games like I have.

The game is so complicated. I’m afraid that I will play solo, then when I try to play with others I’m going to kill them because it’s hard to learn. I like voidfall deluxe because it’s beautiful.. the ships.. the enamel pins. I like fractal for the easier to teach and play and shorter time. But fractal isn’t as pretty, and I don’t like that solo cost extra and the campaign doesn’t work with solo play. I will most likely pass on both.
Yeah, that's a great point about solo and is always my worry. That's why I've stopped playing certain games on Board Game Arena, because then no one will want to play my copies in real life since the skill difference is so drastic.

I was kinda hoping you’d delve more into gameplay mechanisms and reasons specific to Voidfall, not the generic “cuz it costs lots of money!” trope…
Fair enough - I wanted to tread the line of talking about specific mechanics that got me excited, but also there are a bunch of how to plays out there so I figured I wouldn't necessarily rehash it in the best way, especially compared to those that have played the physical copy vs me just reading the rulebook. But I was a little lighter on the mechanics of this one than usual, mainly just because it's hard to distill down to keep the video under 30 minutes. I still think mentioning the retail comparison vs Mindclash's history is valid to those who haven't gotten a Mindclash game before it though, which is why I mentioned it.
The look of Voidfall turned me off. Space hexes covered in cubes and dice where you can barely see there might be a planet in the middle. It looks too much like a game and not like a theme. I'd happily back Fractal but there are too many $200 Canadian games dropping out of the sky on kickstarter so I must let wisdom prevail.

I don’t think this counts as a 4x. There isn’t an explore feature since the map is fully revealed. This is another negative since they are marketing it a 4x game. All you’re doing is expanding, exploiting and exterminating.
Yeah the main developer has referred to it as 2.5X to me in person when getting a demo at Pax, and I agree
