  • It’s been months since COVID-19 brought the US to standstill, upending the lives of millions of Americans. And while states around the nation grapple with how to return to a new normal, many people have started to notice the indirect effects that COVID has had on the millions of people struggling with substance use around the US- a deadly impact that experts worry will persist long after the pandemic is over.
In this Episode of Latest with Lee, Vice correspondent Lee Adams explores the pandemic's wide ranging impact on people grappling with substance use, and its indirect consequences recovery and treatment options by talking to experts around the country and going on the ground to see first hand what happens when one epidemic meets another.
Since the filming of this documentary, Elwood Porter III started working for Prevention Point. He was not employed at the time of filming.

I was in recovery when Covid hit. I was at a sober living and I relied on meetings, group therapy, therapy, and my sponsor to stay clean. Suddenly, my house was put on lock down and I could no longer access group therapy, my therapist, meetings, and my sponsor. I tried meetings on zoom but they seldom helped. I was forced to isolate and the thought of using started to sound better and better as the weeks went on. I kept feeding the thought, it turned into a craving, and I ended up relapsing. I was kicked out and moved back home, and I started using fentanyl again. I relapsed for 6 months. I had to go to rehab for the third time. I have 51 days clean today.

Slip ups happen but eventually you will beat thet and its totally up to you to get clean and stay clean.
Look I literally eneded all relationship with all people who I used with or bought drugs from.
Addiction is how you lived . We forget what life is like sober.
Its scary. Getting sober feels strange because when we use we dont feel .
Then being sober you feel every thing and its over whelming at first .
Stick with one day ay a time. , do not count clean days .
Just accept life and enjoy the feelings all of them .
Life happens before you know it. I had so much emotion and regrets wash over me .
But I felt it and soon I controled it better and better .
I made peace with my self and family , friends who I hurt.
      Most accept you and understand.
Takes time but you can do it .
Stick with it for yourself , and for every one else to know the real you .

Weed was harder to get this pandemic that is why people were turning to other drugs such as coke which has been laced by a 100 chemicals.

Also not to mention the prices of drugs has skyrocketed during the pandemic because of the border crossings being shut down. LOL border crossings are shut down now and then but e-commerce has almost doubled the number of freight containers circulating in the world... both the big stashes and the casual small ones hidden in parcels travel in those containers buddy, not good old border-crossing Mexicans on cars or trucks.
There is way too much checks at the border...there are checks at freight ports too but the sheer number and volumes in transit, we are talking MILLIONS of 44 foot long containers per day, make it totally impossible for law enforcement to even scratch the surface there.
In Italy for instance in some sensible freight ports like Gioia Tauro in Calabria, a huge naval freight facility that was basically built by the local "ndrangheta" mafia and is still partially controlled by them, every single container gets scanned with thermal and airport-like technologies looking for drugs and immigrant smuggling in a huge effort to thwart cocaine import that in the early 2000 was up to 4000kg at a time (ndrangheta is estimated to control 70% of all the cocaine imported into Europe)...
Cocaine supply and prices haven't even flinched.

People who decide to quit finally get to that point to where they are physically and mentally done with the repetitive tail chasing just to not be sick, then a moment in time aligns where us not wanting it anymore and having an actual out to finally rid ourselves of a life altering demin, is nothing short of a miracle. Congratulations to you and I wish you the best on your journey!

As someone who struggles with mental health and cocain addiction i can truely say that this hit the nail on the head, myself and a lot of other users i knows drug use has gone right up since the start of the pandemic and our mental healths gone down. Were not all strong enough to bite the bullet on our own and we need these meeting rooms and drop ins for the support to get out of the vicious cycle were in. Its getting worse each day and its going to keep getting worse when our hope for.humanity and a stable future keeps fading and were stuck with our own thoughts each and every day with no form of escape apart from the drugs that get delivered to the door

Thinking that there is no better time to smoke than now, even if I have tried to quit smoking for many years. I was just trying to live for those 4 or 5 hours a day when I didn’t feel like I wanted to die and actually had the energy to get up and take care of myself. Now that I’m on the right meds, I’ve been clean for almost 4 years. Help is out there, but hard to find in our society when mental health carries a huge stigma and the cost of mental health care is skyrocketing with many insurance companies refusing to cover these services because they don’t view it as a necessity for some people. Hopefully things change within the next 10 years.

Sober for a year now, alcohol included. A friend I used to drink with got stage 3 kidney failure, and it was a wake up call.

Went to rehab in Feb. for a heroin addiction. After completing the program, my first day back into the real world was the first day of lockdown in the U.S. Sober for 10 months, but it’s been difficult. Especially with the pandemic affecting recovery meetings and support groups. Stay strong and love yourselves my brothers and sisters because you’re worth it ✊🏻❤️

Ive been an opiate addict for half my life and I'm 41 yrs. Old. I've been on methadone for 3 years. Slowly going down. It's been a struggle everyday. I'm lucky to be alive. Sorry to everyone who lost someone due to drugs or suicide
