Every time I bemoan the lack of breakfast meals in the MRE menu, I remind myself of these. I've eaten two of them, only because I thought the first one couldn't have been as bad as I thought I remembered. I was wrong; it was.
Rocky Raab Hi Rocky, I felt the same way about the Pork Sausage with Gravy. Most bad rations deserve a second chance, but rarely do they redeem themselves
I have also had the pleasure of taking a bite out of these, twice. Only tried it the second time because I swore the first one must have been rotten somehow. I just remember thinking no way this is what it’s supposed to taste like so I got a newer one, sad to say it’s still disgusting no matter when it was mad.
@20:32 its almost as if the "scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." Malcom from Jurassic Park is always relevant
I feel like they knew. THEY KNEW... That's why they packed all those other delicious things. Seemed like a really hearty meal, considering. They felt so bad that the main entree was crap that they stuffed it to the gills with goodies.
All MREs as I recall had lots of extras. This one is wrong. It’s missing things. Missing the tobacco bottle, instant coffee, sugar and creamer and that gun isn’t chiclets it’s to turn your digestion back in after consuming all those preservatives
Kiwi Dude, I recently got some US military MREs from a buddy of mine at work. I opened one up, and I swear as I was looking at all the components, I described them in a New Zealand accent. I think I've watched too many of your reviews. ;)
There's probably someone somewhere who LOVES this menu number and wishes that he was still in the military so he could still eat this one glorious meal over and over again. If you're out there, speak up!

MrPlusses It's like the vintage MRE's. Taste and smell is pretty bad, but on the other hand it's fun to try the rare and unusual (in this case - notorious!).
It was thoughtful that they gave you a cider rather than two coffees since you received the vanilla cappuccino. Would have originally assumed it was a one size fits all type of accessory package.
johny tard Cheers. Still crying over the Cricket. To make things worse Crystal and I were at a Rugby League game (Warriors vs Broncos) just prior to the Cricket and we lost that too.
The Slick Sniper Oh ok haha. NZ played in the cricket world cup final against our neighbors Australia and I still hate saying it but we lost. Painful loss too as we didnt play our best so it took most NZers a few days to recover and "get over it". always a next time for us lol :p
Jayman2800 If you were hungry, and it was fresh - it wouldn't be too much of a struggle. I'd definitely unload the entire packet of Salsa Verde though.
Powdered cheese, powdered eggs, powdered milk for creamy texture... Playdough indeed! I remember having one of these from two MRE boxes I purchased several years ago. Off the bucket list, but now I'm getting flashbacks of that flavour and texture again.
I am quite surprised you had the cojones to try this one in particular. Most US MREs, you can eat the entree by itself (and some you can eat at room temp), but the omelet DEMANDS the presence of the Salsa. I found, in my time, that the Cappucino tasted even better if you mixed some of the Apple Cider mix in with it. I also find it amusing you have your "Rock or Something" so labeled. Additionally, I always found it odd myself they didn't put a coffee in this one. Most of my brothers-in-arms would have just "dipped" the coffee, kind of like tobacco. if it were included. As for the granola - I always ate it dry.
Ive eaten apple butter since i was a kid. Its basically heavily seasoned and overcooked applesauce. Ive always been a fan of the texture more than the flavor.
The Angry Chef I found it quite nice. Personally I'd consider it Apple 'Jam'. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be bundled in with the likes of Raspberry Jam, Strawberry Jam etc..
Cappuccino is coffee ;) And the Cider was supposed to be hot as well, that's why they gave you the beverage bag. And Salsa Verde is green, that's the Verde part.
Derek Hand An abundance of hot drinks, combined with an entrée like this. The chips were really stacked. The Salsa Verde was one of the highlights though. Dare I say better than Tabasco?
Kiwi Dude Salsa Verde is way better than Tobasco! Though here Salsa Verde isn't that common, too easy to confuse with "Green Chili" which is a local hispanic specialty. It's a spicy Pork Stew that's generally used to smother other foods like Burritos. So the only places to get stuff like Salsa verde are non-local mexican restaurants.
I'm thinking that most soldiers would want a substantial breakfast, especially if they are off base and working hard. I dont see the need for trying to replicate an omelette, which even when made fresh can be horrible if not made correctly. Personally, I think they'd be better off just serving a lighter spiced meal like chicken with a sauce or a pasta than badly executed "breakfast foods". Whoever greenlit this omelette idea should have been shot for treason.
+Samidela idela when in was in, if the mission didn't start before breakfast, we loaded up our tray when possible. If we were off base overnight, then it was this or pogey bait if we could get some. nowadays, if you are in a friendly area, you can go out on the economy and get fresh food and just cook for your squad, platoon, etc. thanks to the cutbacks, more troops are turning to the local option when they can.

I'll never have to have the veggie omelette MRE, but the new ones are pretty damn good. The breakfast ones aren't bad, in fact hash browns are pretty damn good, same with pork sausage, they are just a little light overall in terms of variety and you feel like they don't have many sides, especially compared to other MREs
Warfighter tested. Warfighter condemned. lol It was great to finally see your take on the dreaded "vomelette" as Jaybird196 so accurately described it. I'm glad you spared the boss the horror. XD
Cold. It Can be served Hot. There is anorher MRE review where everything looked expired. I kept telling "NO! DON'T EAT THAT!" and made me go through the MRE's I have in storage and throw half of them away. Watch him eat those eggs brings back horrible flashbacks.
Apple butter is basically a cross between apple sauce and apple jam, it's a good way to preserve a bumper crop of apples... Omelets shouldn't be made shelf-stable... they're bad enough reheated
Mate. Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I was just wondering if there was a reason why some countries to 24 hour rat packs & others do a separate pack for each meal type. Keep up the awesome work with the videos.
Glad you're enjoying them. You'll find that many countries have both individual and 24hr ration packs. It would really come down to mission specifics and logistics as to which one was distributed. Cheers.
I've got a question and it's been bugging me for a while. What happens if you overfill the water? Does it explode or just doesn't work or something cause I'm very curious about this haha
It's more or less about efficiency and resource management. If you drown the thing in water it's still going to work, less efficiently. That is the reaction will still occur, but it won't heat correctly. If you use too little water it may not have enough to finish it's reaction correctly and may not heat the entree thoroughly. EDIT: Pretty much the do not overfill mark is the average point in which the vast majority of the heater elements will have enough water to function correctly.
I've used a bunch of them over the years, and what FoolishDoug said is correct. If you don't add enough water, you never really get a reaction to start. Too much water, and you don't get enough air into the heater to have a proper reaction either.
Are some of them really good? Cause I've always wanted to try one, but I don't think I'm brave enough. If I were to get one, which would you recommend?
I would save my cheese spreads from other MREs for when I got these, if you mixed a whole cheese spread packet + the salsa and the salt these were actually pretty reasonable. Everything else in the MRE is way above average so making the cheese omelette part edible made this whole thing above average.
if you were in the field and you got one of these, you had a very good chance of going hungry, the omelet is simply inedible, everything else in the meal is decent, it was not uncommon to bro out your battle buddies who got these with extra crackers, salsa, cheese, etc, whatever you needed to choke the mess down
It's one of those 'must try' menus, especially for those of us doing reviews. Thanks to Sgt. Potshot for making it happen. I won't be rushing out to try it again ;-)
Salsa Verde is, at least in my experience, made with lime juice and green chiles, and I love it on my eggs for breakfast. However, something tells me those aren't really eggs. At least not eggs as we know them, Jim.
Apple butter gets progressively darker as it gets older. Dark brown color is normal. What's not normal is to put your Salsa Verde of your crackers. It's a southwestern hot sauce. It's meant to go on the vomlet. With the salsa, the vomlet is passable, I've had to eat it in the field.
+Kiwi Dude Your a braver man then i am. As a german i was quite interested in US MREs, but everyone warned me that the veggie omelet is probably only a bit better then roadkill. Some even stated that the so called 4 fingers of death-frankfurter sausages were better. In the end i avoided this, and i think i am glad about this decision. Especially after your reaction :D
+Kiwi Dude the couple times I pulled the short end of the stick and had one of these in the field, I usually ate it cold. for whatever reason it tasted slightly better and because it was just one solid mass it looked a little more appealing in a strange twisted sort of way.
It looks more like mashed potatoes which is one of the more gross things about it. You know when food is supposed to look a certain way? Seeing it like this makes it even more gross.
I can't say how many times I've heard the gum in MRE's referred to as, "Chicklett's gum". Chickletts were/are very tiny (maybe ~1/8" square, different colors - and flavors) pieces of gum. The chunks of gum that come in MRE's are vastly larger. I've never had bad MRE gum... it is just not anything like Chicklett's.
One has to guess how many were tossed in the field before their management up stairs figured out that these were not being eaten. Maybe the USA should add menu reviews like those nice Canadians do in theirs. Cheers.
Fun story, we had MRE's the night before a PT test (technically our lunch because it was a night shift class), I was unlucky enough to get Veggie omelette, being a gung ho 18 year old, I figured why not, I'm stud right? Throughout the night and during class I shat my brains out, and when it finally came to the 2 Mile run, I added two and a half minutes.
I think from eating these vile old MREs Kiwi-Dude has been self inoculating himself from all the most virulent of bacterial infections. He may be one of the few survivors of a deadly bacteria spread holocaust.
the scones in our exp, have always been "a little off" something about how they make them shelf stable..chemicals...only way i could ever choke one down was with 2-3 packets of that apple butter..smother it in spiced apple paste!!!
MRE foods are the best. My dad was in the army for two years and when he came back he give me my sister and my brothers MRE food. but it was back in 2005 and 2006. I was wondering when you can get them at?
Kayla McNeish eBay is a really good source for U.S. MRE's. If you live in the U.S. there's other options like Army surplus stores, specialise websites etc..
An EPA costs about $20 NZD, but the shipping from somewhere like Germany to New Zealand would cost about $50 NZD. It really depends on where you are in the world as to how cheap they can be sourced. Shipping is always the biggest expense.
MRE videos are my favourite! As a long time viewer of Gshultz I found my way here. Nice to hear a fellow Kiwi accent! Are you still in NZ? Or living abroad?
Nice! I'm down in the deep south in Dunedin. As a fellow kiwi, do you also find it a bit weird how MRE main meals are described as Entrees? To me an entree is more like a starter than a main! Perhaps it is just me.
kasilz I did find it odd at the beginning, but now it feels normal. In all other situations though, I too consider an entrée a dish to come before a 'main'.
As far as urban legend goes, I believe that the main course of this MRE, the omelette itself, matches perfectly to what people would think of when they think of MRE's. Not all that good, and looking like regurgitated something. Most MRE's are, or at least look, quite good. People need to remember that soldiers cannot be AFK because of stomachs problems from food as they are needed in the battlefield, so the food may not taste the best but it should never give you stomach problems. That said, I think that MRE's have developed quite a nasty reputation over the years that because they are "food on the go" and aren't in conventional storage, they give you stomach problems. Perhaps past MRE type food stuffs did, but modern MRE's are much more soldier-minded rather than government-minded, where they look at food and make it so soldiers want to eat them and enjoy them to some extent, while still being able to produce and pack them efficiently.

I fully expected it to look pretty bad, but, HOLY JESUS! That might just be one of the worst looking foods I have ever seen this side of roadkill.
It's pretty bad.
3 days in a row out in the field for lunch I randomly picked this item. Would rather have starved than eat the insult of an omelette.
Don't disrespect roadkill like that
When he poured the omelet onto the tray I gagged like never before, It looked disgusting.
I want my oown "Rock or something" just to look at and smile while I watch these videos. LOL

Razzlewolfflight Agreed.
Salsa verde (green sauce) is usually used for homemade tacos! I'm surprised to see it in this MRE haha.
A fine addition, I feel :) .
Sasha U I can imagine it going well with a number of other menus, but this is the first time I've seen it. Hope to see it again!

I think you were suppost to use hot water with the oats? Correct me if im wrong.
The Slick Sniper you're right. It was oatmeal. Needed hot water.
+The Slick Sniper I could not see anything about the water needing to be hot or cold on the granola pack, but I assume it's up to personal preferance
NO! That was not meant for hot water it is granola! Granola is eaten as a cold cereal.
Cold. It Can be served Hot. There is anorher MRE review where everything looked expired. I kept telling "NO! DON'T EAT THAT!" and made me go through the MRE's I have in storage and throw half of them away. Watch him eat those eggs brings back horrible flashbacks.
nightmares returned so did the taste
Verde is green in Spanish, so at least they came through for you!
Idda Knoe Salsa Verde was one of the highlights :-)
Where do u get them from i want one thank you for your videos they are wonderfull
_"Weird that there's no coffee."_
**
Seriously though, always enjoy these videos for some reason. :)
MRE omelet, AKA 'Lung in a Bag'
Apple butter is basically a cross between apple sauce and apple jam, it's a good way to preserve a bumper crop of apples... Omelets shouldn't be made shelf-stable... they're bad enough reheated
Try jail omeletes
This one was actually the favorite of a friend of mine when he was in the Marines.
+CookwithSarah I'm sure he had no shortage of people willing to trade with him! Lol.
EDIT:
Pretty much the do not overfill mark is the average point in which the vast majority of the heater elements will have enough water to function correctly.
I've used a bunch of them over the years, and what FoolishDoug said is correct. If you don't add enough water, you never really get a reaction to start. Too much water, and you don't get enough air into the heater to have a proper reaction either.
FoolishDoug Plus, it's a waste of vital drinking water.
FoolishDoug Great answer, Doug.
it wont heat
Are some of them really good? Cause I've always wanted to try one, but I don't think I'm brave enough. If I were to get one, which would you recommend?
I could have sworn you posted another video that had the cheese and veggie omelet, but I may be going insane. O_o
Reike4chan Gschultz9 did the same menu recently :-)
Watching this just in time for Halloween.
Props to you for eating that. It looks more like that company packaged something that came out of a diaper, and called it a veggie ommlet
endoftheroadj It's one of those 'go to your happy place' menus ;-)
I'm curious, have you ever gotten food poisoning eating one of these older ones?
I would save my cheese spreads from other MREs for when I got these, if you mixed a whole cheese spread packet + the salsa and the salt these were actually pretty reasonable. Everything else in the MRE is way above average so making the cheese omelette part edible made this whole thing above average.
if you were in the field and you got one of these, you had a very good chance of going hungry, the omelet is simply inedible, everything else in the meal is decent, it was not uncommon to bro out your battle buddies who got these with extra crackers, salsa, cheese, etc, whatever you needed to choke the mess down
lol nooo coffee, that vanilla cappuccino is actually a coffee. 😂
the spiced cider is usually warmed up to drink
cool video. thanks!
Nearly scared me when you pulled the 'scone' out. I thought the moisture absorber was mold.
The Cider was meant to be put into the beverage bag and added to the MRE heater bag.
Hey kiwi dude you should do a video on your camera setup. I want to get into mre vids but I don't know the camera setup
Yikes! That looks terrifying. I'm glad you had the bravery to do it, hahah.
It's one of those 'must try' menus, especially for those of us doing reviews. Thanks to Sgt. Potshot for making it happen. I won't be rushing out to try it again ;-)
Hahah, I bet! I'm glad to see you alive after eating that one. :P
Can anyone link me to the video with the 1983 MRE? I can't find it
:(
RedPandaLove There you go: th-cam.com/video/QM--9rEvTJU/w-d-xo.html
Is there anyone know where can I buy this vomelette, I really try this particular one myself.
Salsa Verde is, at least in my experience, made with lime juice and green chiles, and I love it on my eggs for breakfast. However, something tells me those aren't really eggs. At least not eggs as we know them, Jim.
James Douglas The Salsa Verde was definitely the highlight. The eggs were... "Highly illogical" ;-)
Kiwi Dude *Spock voice* Pain! Pain!
Jaybird196 Lol ;-)
That there Vomelette is pristine. Like you got it Day one after packing
Hey you should do a video on your camera setup when you do the mre videos
Apple butter gets progressively darker as it gets older. Dark brown color is normal. What's not normal is to put your Salsa Verde of your crackers. It's a southwestern hot sauce. It's meant to go on the vomlet. With the salsa, the vomlet is passable, I've had to eat it in the field.
*tastes omelette*
Ugh.....why?
+April Jones At the risk if using a double negative, I couldn't not.
Kiwi Dude I was quoting you. I loved that reaction to the taste of the omelette.
The cappuccino has coffee in it. So, there wasn't your usual packet of coffee crystals, but it still did have coffee. :)
I was going to have eggs for supper too! ick! Eggs in the Navy were never right even fresh because they weren't fresh.
@kiwi dude are you still doing these reviews?!? If so I have one for you to do!!!!!!!!!
I can't say how many times I've heard the gum in MRE's referred to as, "Chicklett's gum".
Chickletts were/are very tiny (maybe ~1/8" square, different colors - and flavors) pieces of gum. The chunks of gum that come in MRE's are vastly larger.
I've never had bad MRE gum... it is just not anything like Chicklett's.
in what universe is that a scone
Kiwi, cappuccino is the coffee in the MRE.
Max Starmer Lol.. of course. I totally missed that one!
Oh my... i dreamt about getting an MRE and when u woke up and checked youtube you uploaded.... eh its kinda the ssme thing
Brandon Limbono It was definitely an experience. Really glad to have cross this one off the list. Thanks again to Sgt Potshot for sending it in.
did that meal look the same after you puked it up? i imagine it looked very similar.
One has to guess how many were tossed in the field before their management up stairs figured out that these were not being eaten. Maybe the USA should add menu reviews like those nice Canadians do in theirs. Cheers.
You are braver than most soldiers trying that crap lol.
I swear there must be something wrong with me, but toss some Tabasco on the omelette and I loved it
Fun story, we had MRE's the night before a PT test (technically our lunch because it was a night shift class), I was unlucky enough to get Veggie omelette, being a gung ho 18 year old, I figured why not, I'm stud right?
Throughout the night and during class I shat my brains out, and when it finally came to the 2 Mile run, I added two and a half minutes.
Great review! That omelet looked awful! I wonder how they managed to make eggs look nothing like eggs?
1weirdgirl Cheers Kerri. More realistic eggs have come out of Crystal's Play Doh factory ;-)
i wana try a mre do you know were i can get one for free
Hello +kiwi dude I'm new to youtube can you upload a vid on your camera setup
GROSS, and interesting, but hope you were not on toilet for 2 days for this little gem of an MRE. Good review
discgolfer78 Cheers. No ill effects (miracle!),
I think from eating these vile old MREs Kiwi-Dude has been self inoculating himself from all the most virulent
of bacterial infections. He may be one of the few survivors of a deadly bacteria spread holocaust.
Bill23799 LOL funny stuff
That seems like a fall themed mre with the cider and cinnamon roll
Portal2master cinnamon roll mre...you may be on to something
lol this is new review :D awesome !
Esfandiari Bhaktiari Cheers.
That omelet looks like cheesy mashed potatoes. Also, who the fuck puts peas in an omelet?
doesnt he know cappuchino is coffe
coffee*
Was about to say lol
the scones in our exp, have always been "a little off" something about how they make them shelf stable..chemicals...only way i could ever choke one down was with 2-3 packets of that apple butter..smother it in spiced apple paste!!!
MRE foods are the best. My dad was in the army for two years and when he came back he give me my sister and my brothers MRE food. but it was back in 2005 and 2006. I was wondering when you can get them at?
Kayla McNeish eBay is a really good source for U.S. MRE's. If you live in the U.S. there's other options like Army surplus stores, specialise websites etc..
okay thank you. i watch your videos all the time. do you know how much the German's MREs food cost?
An EPA costs about $20 NZD, but the shipping from somewhere like Germany to New Zealand would cost about $50 NZD. It really depends on where you are in the world as to how cheap they can be sourced. Shipping is always the biggest expense.
alright thank you
MRE videos are my favourite! As a long time viewer of Gshultz I found my way here. Nice to hear a fellow Kiwi accent! Are you still in NZ? Or living abroad?
kasilz Hi there, I'm a big Gschultz fan myself :-) Still in N.Z (Auckland).
Thank you
