    I have a 1988 c1500 Cheyenne with the 305 V8. Snagged her for $300 with 135k on her 5 years ago, and she needed love, still does. But every problem in this video is spot on, the door hinge bolts and bushings always go bad over time, but these trucks are so reliable that I bought mine, put an alternator in it, and drove her all the way from south Jersey, to Savannah, Ga, then up to Tennessee and back to south jersey, around 2,500+ miles and not a single issue or even a flat. These trucks are built strong, reliable, and made for the owner to be able to service it themselves. To be honest I think they should put another line of these out, I’d rather buy one brand new for $30-40k than this shit they put out these days. Once I get a garage, I will end up documenting the complete restoration of her step by step.

      Right on brother, love your story, and thanks for sharing! I remember being so happy to get my truck in a garage. And these are badass amazing trucks. I was just out driving mine today as it's been sitting in the garage all winter looking pretty. Sounds like you got yourself a *sweet GMT400* . I have the best resource anywhere on *GMT400 Upgrades and Performance Parts* . I have a 3K word article that truly covers it all with links to everything. I mean everything. *You should check it out* . It will be a solid resource for you going forward www.buildpriceoption.com/gmt400-upgrades/ and I have *over 60 videos of my truck* and most of the videos are of me doing some kind of fix. Got the same truck, same year.
      I had to replace the entire front end suspension. I feel as though I may also have a gasket leak. I was driving to work in Atlantic City one day. Truck had run fine. Appeared to start to "overheat" and as I was pulling over lost responsiveness in the throttle.
      Sound like a gasket leak?
      Great truck tho.

    I own a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 454 7.4 with the NV4500 manual transmission. Just went over 1,415,000 miles on it and just had to order a ECM today. Yest that's a million miles. Never rebuilt, does not burn oil and survived sitting in 3-4ft of water during Hurricane Harvey. I had to replace a lot of stuff after the flood, but that truck has worked daily through three different businesses. It's a true work horse. It use to get 13-14 mpg city and about 17 hwy loaded or unloaded. Now she gets about 11 city , 14 hwy. I decided I'm going to put a new distributor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, temp sensor, map sensor etc to go with the new ECM. They just don't build trucks like these anymore. Parts are dirt cheap. I'm still finding some parts made here in USA, Mexico, Canada, but more and more in China. The China stuff is pretty junky with the heat from those 454. I enjoy my truck. Also I really haven't had most of those issues you listed. LOL.

    The same body-style was continued until 2002. I have a 2000 C3500HD. These were originally sold as Cab & Chassis trucks. There's a filler panel between the grill and front bumper to cover the gap created by the massive frame. They have Dana 80 rear axles, i-beam front axles, and leaf-springs on all four corners. Mine was the last year for the 7.4 (454) Vortec. Great trucks.

    • @jimervin1637
      @jimervin1637 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And that filler panel is just a piece of plastic which easily cracks and breaks if you hit something with the front bumper, as I did once. But those things are now replaced.

      @@KingStepside No not correct, the 3500HD (the real HD truck) was around until from 1991 to 2002. It is a true class 4, 15,000 GVW C&C only, medium duty truck that was eventually replaced by the Topkick and Kodiak C4500 trucks. The Silverado is just a class 2-3 truck regardless if pickup or C&C. GM started to use HD for Silverado as it worked well from a marketing point, nothing more.

    Very solid reliable truck. My late production 1994 Sierra has 270,000 miles. Of the problems you mentioned I have had the intake manifold gaskets replaced at 240,000 miles. They were causing an intermittent vacuum leak. It is also on alternator no. 3. Nothing electrical, its the bearings that have failed. 5.7 liter engine is original and otherwise unopened. Interestingly, the tail light and license lights have the new glass wedge shaped bulb bases, while the interior and front end bulbs have the better known round brass based bulbs. I installed led high and low beams, and they make a great difference.

    So many different ways to do these trucks. Love the 90s OBS look.
    The OEM oil cooler lines that snap in to the oil filter adapter seem to be a common oil leak problem.
    I spent the better part of two weekends standing inside my engine bay cleaning oil and dirt after I pulled the motor out.
    I decided on the oil cooler delete. No oil line leaks, quicker valvetrain lubrication on startup, and easier oil changes.

    Bought it with 97,231. Miles.
    Bought it from an older gentleman.

    • @BuildYourOwn
      @BuildYourOwn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're facing with your '95 c2500. Based on your description, it sounds like it could be a fuel delivery problem or a sensor issue. Here are a few things you might consider checking:
      Fuel Pressure: Ensure that the fuel pump is delivering the correct pressure. A faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter can cause these symptoms.
      Throttle Body and IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve: The TBI system relies on the IAC valve to regulate the idle. If it's dirty or malfunctioning, it can cause idle issues. Cleaning the throttle body and IAC valve might help.
      Vacuum Leaks: Check for any vacuum leaks, as they can cause rough idling and stalling.
      TPS (Throttle Position Sensor): A faulty TPS can cause idling issues and stalling. You might want to test its functionality.
      Check the Distributor: Ensure that the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wires are in good condition.
      ECM (Engine Control Module): Sometimes, a faulty ECM can cause such issues. Check for any stored error codes.
      Fuel Injectors: Ensure that the fuel injectors are not clogged and are functioning correctly.
      It's always a good idea to start with the basics, checking for spark, fuel, and air. If you're not comfortable diagnosing the issue yourself, I'd recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic who is familiar with the TBI system. I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in resolving the issue! 🚗🔧👍

    Do you still have the factory air cleaner in place? My 93 Chevy 4.3 thermac air cleaner flap that directs hot air from the exhaust manifold took a crap on me last week. The wax pellet that melts which slowly opens the flap doesn't work anymore. I stuck a piece of rubber hose in the flap to hold it open so I could get fresh air to the throttle body. Truck was running like crap when flap was stuck closed and nothing but hot air going to throttle body! You can't find replacements anywhere, only option is salvage yard.......chances are they don't work either.

    Actually most of them sound not fatality, not hard to fix in garage, and parts are not expensive even from dealer.
    Mine is also a 1994, it's a Chevy Suburban Silverado K2500, with a 454 underneath. I own it for 1 and half years and 10k miles so far, I love it.
    Issues I encountered:
    1 ICM(Ignition control module), caused stall during driving, wrong-timing-like rough idle, and enormous backfire. This once happened on Golden Gate Bridge, what a perfect place to have your truck broken down. lol And right on the bridge, the catalytic converter got shattered by the backfire. Changed a new ICM. My mechanic told me this is common issue. I dissembled the failed one, yeah, one of the chips fried.
    2 4WD actuator, sounds like another common issue.
    3 ABS module. Yeah, it's module, not wheel sensor.
    4 A/C compressor, looks like another common issue on 88-95, because I can't find it in junk yard, all are gone, means many are bad. Meanwhile 96-98s are there, means they don't broken so many.
    5 Electric door lock on driver side rear door, may be the one on your list?
    6 Radio can't receive any signal, don't know it's antenna or something inside the radio module.

    • @BuildYourOwn
      @BuildYourOwn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Golden Gate Bridge had to be a horrible place to break down. I had EGR issues when I first got the truck. I haven't had the truck but maybe 2 years and change. The joke is I spend more time working on it than driving it lol. We call it the movie star truck since I do so many videos with it. But it actually runs great and I have come to really love this old truck. Next jobs coming up will be intake manifold gaskets and then a new steering box and shaft to get rid of the play in the wheel. Thank you for sharing your truck. Its encouraging to hear from everyone. @@BuildYourOwn Haha, I have the same joke, but mine is the damn ICM. The problem is, you don't know when will this damn thing goes bad, so when you want to diagnose it, it runs good. But when you assume every thing is okay, go out for driving, it goes bad suddenly. To make it worse, at places that you never want it to happen, the GGB is just one of them, it once happened in a 2-line tunnel without emergency parking line, then one day at center line of a high traffic flow 5-line highway, and almost got rear-ended by vehicle behind when trying to merge to right shoulder.
      I changed fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, fuel pressure regulator spring, and then distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, so I know every hardware for fueling system and ignition system.
      After changed ICM, the stall problem never happened, but its power is very very weak. After many miles of driving, some reading on service manual, it finally turns out I didn't it wrong when doing ignition base timing. You know there is a ignition wire, should unplug it when doing base timing. The repair manual says the wire is near distributor, but I never found it, then I just assume that cold idle is base time, so the actual timing is about -30 when it supposed to be +4. Then on the internet, I found out the wire is actually inside cab, above passenger's feet, near the blower motor! Then I did find it, unplug it, finished the timing, then every thing goes right till now.
      Yeah, anyway, working on these old trucks and engines, running between garage and junk yard is a pure fun. Especially 88-95 TBI system, everything is simple and straight forward.
      Sometime I feel, it's like conquering a good horse. It tries everything to throw you on the ground, but when you finally win, it will be your best friend, honest to you forever.
      My coming up project, is add second radiator, and electric fan convention, then have someone to reprogram the ECM, add stand-alone TCM. Maybe in the future far away, procharger.

      Sounds like you have some serious experience with these trucks... So let me ask you... I have the 4.3 tbi and I am seriously considering an engine swap, but I want to keep it as simple and straightforward as possible. I've come to the conclusion that I would like to find a 350 tbi crate engine, maybe put some good heads, a performance intake that accepts tbi and some headers and call it a day. I am looking for as plug-and-play easy as possible. I would keep messing with my 4.3L but there are no parts for it. Curious about your input

    I can only assume all of your pricing quotes are hiring the work done, but as an Avid GMT400 truck fan and having owned 13 over the years, brake pedal fade on the earlier models with the early Anti-Lock brake controller is common. In the rust belt, frame failure is very common on trucks not kept clean or not undercoated, door hinge bushings another big one, trucks equipped with cruise control often experience a failed turn signal stock and those need replaced, also flexible brake lines after about 15 years begin to fail internally causing your steering wheel to jerk to one side or the other under certain braking conditions, 4L80 and 4L80E tail shaft seal failure at around 150K miles and another rust belt issue is factory tow hitch rust. Great video! Thanks for compiling your experiences for us! Zip~

      @@BuildYourOwn I'll definitely check it out! To add...5 of my GMT400's had the 4.3L and even with their quirky odd fire (which was only done one other time with Buick and their 225 V6 that eventually became the 3.8 of Buick Grand National Fame), they are and were a dead reliable platform that you could literally put 500,000 miles on with just regular maintenance. Add the 5 speed manual and typically higher rear end gearing and a few tweaks on the top ends and you've got one super odd (see what I did there) sleeper of a truck that still got in the area of 20mpg on the highway. The last 4.3 I owned I passed along to a friend and at last check it's got 423,000ish miles on the untouched except for typical maintenance engine AND 700R4/4L60 Non electronic. Cheers! Zip~
