Fantastic lesson! I had less than a day to prepare for doing a song in a service in a reggae style. This video enabled me to produce an authentic reggae vibe and attracted many favourable comments! Thanks James 😊.
100% agree. You'll know when you're there. I'm an absolute beginner, but I have a weird natural knack for reggae, which is peculiar considering I'm as white as it gets, and come from a hard rock/metal background!
James that was JuicyJuicy baby! I've only started playing bass last week and I was able to play along not perfectly but good enough ... thank you brother! I prefer the second groove because of the octave sound. Its more dynamic to me. You're a funtastic teacher. I subscribed! I'm loving learning to play the bass . I'm all about Dat bass!
Not sure if you mentioned but typically flatwound strings are preferred in reggae, I've jammed with many reggae and dub reggae bands and flatwounds do the trick..or dead round wounds work to. But string choice is essential.
A respectful and thoughtful look at the genre ! Not bad at all.. My only qualm might be that you're playing Three Little Birds a bit too staccato.. but that's being nit picky
¡Arrechisimo! he visto otros tutoriales, pero este lo explica muy claro, el sonido es genial, ¡muchacho! eres un bárbaro en este tutorial, ¡de pinga!. Awesome!!!, I have seen other tutorials, but this one explains it very clearly, the sound is great, guy, you are a barbarian in this tutorial, very cool!!!
@@ebassguitar my friend I didn’t mean to offend you at all your doing a great job bringing playing reggae to peps who probably never tried it before .. all good 😌👍👍
Hell, I'm not even a minute and a half in, and I've already stopped the video to start copying riffs, then improvising off that !!!! This looks like another winner that I'm gonna need to dwell on a while !!!
@@ebassguitar No bro, I haven't. I've got a backlog of stashed videos here already, more content than my bitty brain can process !!! But you've quickly moved into my favorite top 3 guys here !! Keep 'em coming, you'll see me hanging around !
I just started playijg bass "seriously" in late 2023 after wanting to for years. I mainly play live, 95% improv, and I find reggae oddly comfortable. Not sure why!
Thanks for the lessons. But want to ask its like your plucking hand is far from the neck. whiles some reggae bass players recommend its should be closer to the neck plucking.
Sorry but Three little birds in the intro sounded nothing like the original bass. Too much staccato, you muted and added ascents to notes in all the wrong places. It just destroyed the feel.
@ 6;34 you state the drum accent is on the 2 and four,,,,NOT correct,,,,3 little birds is a 'ond drop' ride,,,one drop accents is on either the 1 or 3, in 3 Little Birds the accent is on the 3,,,,,if u are gonna attempt to teach reggae pls do a bit of research and do it correctly, having said that 1/love
DOCTAH X dude, I did my research on this. I think you a feeling the pulse twice as fast so the kick drum would fall on beat 3. I feel this as half time so the kick falls on 2 & 4. There is a debate on how this should be felt because the guy who makes me the tracks feels it double time. In my opinion neither is right or wrong. I think I might have even mentioned that in the films...

Thank you James O have been learn a lot from you...
You're very welcome Edmundus!
Another great lesson James. Thanks!
Superb lesson thanks very much. Practice time with the pdf. Lovely feel to reggae tunes. Brilliant
This is one of those styles where one needs to just feel it - analyzing it kills it.

Sean Savage makes total sense Sean! :-)
This is great, I'm playing a raggae tune, among other styles and needed a quick lesson. Gig is in a couple of days so this was a life saver.
Great tutorial! :) Got the PDF too! As a complete bass beginner this should keep me busy for a while. Hope to join the club soon! :)
Hey Joe! How's your bass playing? Glad you like the video! Have you tried Bass Lab Plus? All the best!!

Watson Unlimited staccato?!? This isn't Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach.... it's Reggae, Mon!

My take on Reggae is that you have to weave the notes around the rests.
I just started playijg bass "seriously" in late 2023 after wanting to for years. I mainly play live, 95% improv, and I find reggae oddly comfortable. Not sure why!
I Want to learn bass
Do it!

Thanks for the lessons.

That’s something you can experiment with to get the reggae tone that’s for sure... give it a go and let me know how you get on :-)

- thanks for what you do) You have useful lessons)
Glad you learn something useful from the video! Stay tuned for more lessons! :-)
what bass model(s) do you recommend for reggae?
Any decent bass should do it... but I’d probably choose an active bass, so I can turn the bass control ip
Maybe it's just me but I could not hear the bass in the mix. Perhaps turn the bass up or turn the backing track down.
What device are you listening to it on Stuart?
Good lesson but needs on scene tab
Why don’t you download the free pdf?
You’ll learn far more taking that apart ;-)
thanks James nice lesson

🤯 too much music theory for a beginner
Thanks for pointing that out! All the best!

Hmmm.. not doing it for me. I prefer domstrumental's channel. Flabba Holt groove things like that
Well, don is a mate and coming on to a live masterclass thing week - I’m excited!
But i dont wanna learn theory, i just wanna sound cool
Why do you not want to learn theory?
@@ebassguitar it's too hard, i just wanna sit down and play some cool stuff, make use of the patterns etc
I promise you it’s not actually that hard… and the result you’ll experience will far out weigh the work you need to put in
