For people dealing with lag: when the opponent swaps out, look at the top right. To see the pokémon or its name, you will often eat several fast attacks. Or maybe even a pre-charged charge move before you even know what it is. But if you look at the top right, the type of that Pokemon will show up and update much faster.
Thanks a lot! This has been really helpful, coz I’m just learning pvp and I’ve been grinding great league. I lead with ferrothorn and it’s common for my opponent to switch into a talonflame or turtonator or something, but using the pop up in the right I can know the fires coming and switch out to carbink before ferrothorn gets destroyed by an incinerate or two. Fire types hate carbink… unless it’s heatran but you very rarely see him in great league
I heard a good explanation of the pvp IVs, if you have a jar and want to fill it with marbles, the jar is the CP cap, marbles are the stats. Attack marbles are twice the size of def and HP marbles so you get more marbles in the jar with less attack
The pop-up graphics, the side-by-side gameplay. I know my PVP, but man watching this video just for the production was worth it! Good job Daxi, and thank you Dan!
How do you articulately explain pvp concepts to newbies and intermediate level players? THIS is how you do it! Always a pleasure watching and digesting the tips!
I would really like a video on the PvP meta for each season. Changes, what to look out for in the great and ultra league. More meta relevant teams strengths and weaknesses. Maybe Dan would be better off doing a segment on this.
There's a bunch of guys that do videos like that within hours of the new updated moves and moveset changes dropping. Usually the videos are out so fast that they usually have a few things wrong that because Niantic had wrote the wrong info on their site.
Incredible video! This was so helpful in explaining a lot of the concepts I've been trying to understand in PVP and explained mechanics I didn't even know existed. I'll be re-watching this several times-a wealth of information. Much appreciated!
First of all, thank Daxi for always making these incredible explaination videos...and also, thank you Dan for being apart of this awesome compliment of knowledge. I always hit Ace, every season.. but its difficult to raise pass that.. i normally go with teams of pokemon i like, for eg, Togekiss, Melmetal, Excadrill for the master league.. but i couldnt have told you any of that 'ABB' stuff. Now I understand what is required to build teams, somewhat, but im sure it will take alot of practise
Great advice! I amazed how I kinda figured most of this out on my own. Giving away all these secrets, now I see why rank 20 is tough :) Another consideration, yes a person can count fast moves....but I do like throwing them quick and hopefully cause frustration...gosh they're throwing something already...and again....
I would argue that understanding "Team Building" should be intermediate, not advanced. But otherwise, this is SUPER helpful in understanding battling mechanics and strategies.
You’re receiving tons of praise and it’s well deserved! Just started “seriously” learning to battle in GBL last season. My BIGGEST mistake was to try and level every “Meta” Pokémon or counter meta … wasted sooooo many resources! By the time I got my stunfisk (g) up for great league it was time for Ultra and I have no team lol… so last season was rough. I had to stop with scatter gun leveling… none made it and I’m broke. NOW I am so worried I’ll waste more resources I am not leveling anything 😂. I’ve been reading/watching every thing I can and still suck (peaked at 1641 last s12). I NEED a “core” group to build around
Nice to see @Danottawa here as a fellow Ottawa player myself. He’s so right about good players just knowing matchups, the first season I hit legend I played the same GL and UL lines for the entire season without ever switching. I’m by no means a good player, but by “one tricking” my teams and playing so many matches, I had very strong knowledge of the specific line I was running for that league, and just that alone was enough to hit legend, despite my overall relatively low game knowledge.
Hit legend in season 12 (3168 season high) and got to 2939 in 11. What changed everything for me, besides just the experience of playing, was the move timing optimization. I never could get past veteran before I learned proper timing. It seemed like I kept losing very close battles all the time. Once I learned that the vast majority of those close losses could’ve been wins if I had used proper timing, I learned it by heart. And now I don’t even think about it. It’s mechanical for me. And I’ve watched my ELO go from the 23-2400s to nearly 3200 as a result.
@@GDMartin you can look up “move timing tutorial Pokémon go” and get some good videos to show you. FPSticks has a good one. But an example would be if you have a 2 turn move and they have a 5 turn move, you never throw on 5. (That’s 10 turns which aligns with their 2nd 5 live turn (10 turns)). If you were to throw at that time, they would get a full free 5-turn move in on you when gameplay is interrupted to play the charge move minigame. But if you throw on 2, (4 turns), you can throw your move just before theirs ends, keeping them from being able to get that incinerate
From my experience fast moves such as Mudshot, Thundershock, Psycho Cut and Power snow, are typically the best type of fast moves especially for PvP/Rocket boss/Grunt or any trainer battle in general that are not raids, as they charge up energy to use your charged moves the fastest and thus being able to attack first depending on what charged moves you have can either make or break the battle for you, usually make), as being able to attack first can either get you opponent to Sheild first or if not can get you a Ko or even if no ko or no shield still will put you at an advantage if you opponents go is lower and close to being Koed and may be able to quickly farm down or if the charge move has a star debuff then that can also turn the battle around. Typically speaking in a PvP or any type of non raid battle situation it's good to have an efficient fast move that generates the most energy and two charged move, with one of them being a 3 bar spammy 35-40 energy charged move to be able to quickly and efficiently spam sheilds especially against rocker bosses, and with the 2nd move being your nuke move, but preferably not a one bar high energy move like hyper beam as they do high damage but are usually not efficient as they can take too long to charge up. Typically a 2 bar, 40-55 energy 2 bar move that can do around 70 to as much as 100 damage, as those are usually the best nuke moves as they are efficient in energy and not too slow for the good amount of damage they do, such as shadowball, outrage etc
Huge caveat to the advice given here to play at midnight. As with any ranked competitive game, if you play when the server load is light, you are more likely to be matched with more varied opponents. If I play at one in the morning, I am very often searching for an opponent for a while, and then end up with people that are much higher or lower level than normal. If I play at around 6:00 p.m., everyone is very evenly matched with me, even in terms of the kinds of teams they're using. The matchmaking is much better when the servers are full.
Thanks Daxi and Dan Ottawa! This is great! Here's to hoping I can finally get past Ace! Also, just saying I'm super proud of Carracosta as my spice pick for this season. I've only seen one or two other people running him and he's awesome so far!

@@bertram1724you’re doing a great job of saying nothing bud. try harder to explain and it’ll help YOU understand more what you are trying to articulate … if you even do know 🤧
@@PSYCHOV3N0M basically, to win you have to think about which pokemon can beat the opponent pokemon , think about your energy ,shield usage ,switching possibly and in a way you have to think steps ahead. Brilliant video - excellent structure with great explanations by yourself and Dan! Only thing I'd add, as a new player, is the importance of correct movesets and also community day moves... For example I started after Spheal comm day, but heard Walrein was good... so built one (with decent ivs) BUT without powder snow & icicle spear. It didn't go well, since walrein is virtually useless without them! So I'd recommend people use something like pvpoke to find correct moveset for pokemon 👍
Very comprehensive. It took multiple seasons with help from friends to absorb the concepts. But the reward is multiple legend and chances to get a shiny Libre.

I'll admit that back in 2020 when I resumed playing Pokemon Go after COVID came along, I also didn't know that you could have a second charge move on a Pokemon. 😅
This shows how primitive pokemon go is. I mean a billion dollar company can't even explain the meaning of a small button in the game that almost EVERY Pokemon has. I used to think the same back when I returned to pokemone go in 2019. For 6 months I didn't use a single TM because the TM notification said that the move will be forgotten by the pokemon. And when I did TM away a move (blast burn from my community day infernape (my first community day) to get a fighting move) I wasted 40 charged TMs to get blast burn. After that incident I purged my storage of all 100 or so fast and charged TMs. It wasn't until a local taught me how to use the TMs that I started gathering them again. I wish Pokemon go had a tutorial for newbies like I was back in 2019, since I still mourn the loss of those TMs (not really).
didn’t you battle people who used Aqua Tail , and the next move Hydro Cannon or something? how could you not notice people have 2 charge moves ? never saw a person with it either ?
@@GDMartin honestly I didn't. And even if I did I must have thought that it was some kind of cheating as GBL was full of cheaters back in the early seasons. And the game never teaches us the difference between the new move button and a charge TM
Having played so much pokemon long before Go, then rejoining last year, I only battled a few grunts before I had it all figured out. The lack of immunities and not knowing the second charge move option wasn't a "farm stardust for a free move change" option for too long were the trickiest learning curves, and I'm not fond of the former. But I started SLAYING in the Battle League right away, going on 30-60 win streaks. I joined during one of the Little Cup events. A year later I often end up battling people with fully groomed, PvP IV, best buddy teams and still go toe to toe with them. People who played Go from day 1, have rage quit against me from getting absolutely baited with a weird core team into swap locks. The only thing this video gave me was terminology 😅
Saving this video to watch again (and again) later. Got to Ace the first time last season, and it can only go up from here. :) Thank you and DanOttawa as always for the great content!
Thank you for making this. There are players who look down on PvP thinking it's just tapping and luck. This video proves that their opinions are wrong because there's a lot of strategy and nuance to PvP, especially when you're in the higher ranks.
Best advice I can give anyone serious about hitting legend ; Pick a meta line for the GL and UL, and ONLY run that line for the season. Don’t switch Mons because you have a few bad sets. Persist with the line and you WILL eventually start succeeding because you’ve experienced certain matchups and situations so many times. It’s inevitable. Just takes discipline, but it’s worth it.
This was an excellent video. Not particularly relative to me atm, but definitely good for a ton of people! Maybe it'll help me not have people rage quit!😆
Omg, some of the information it was very obvious, but you solve all the questions I had about the battles, thank you very much, and I like you speak fast and to the point. Thanks
Thank you, helped a lot! But here a little feedback: Dan Ottawa didnt explain a few things very well (even if I am happy, that such a high elo player gives us tips!), especially the important part with the Switch, Shiled, Lead Advantages, he nearly only gave definitions (which we knew already), but didnt explain strategies how we can get this advantages. But the Team explanations was cool, good to have, even if I didnt understand the advantages of all teams to 100%. Thank you, I loved your explanations and even Dan Ottawas part was good!
This is a great video for people struggling with PVP, especially the explanation for PVP IVs because I never know how to explain this to people lol great work dax!! Also I never top left, I just can't bring myself to do it 😔 even if I know I'm squashed
The bar around the health of the mon will also denote the effectiveness. In case a player missed the wording. White neutral, red Super effective, blue resisted
Is there a video that contains all ~70 fast move animations so you can identify what they're using so it can be counted? So far, I think mudbomb and dragon breath are kind of obvious but a fighting move like counter is less obvious (some have the ghostey hands and feet and others just have starbursts) and I'm just wondering if anyone has compiled that in an advanced PVP guide. Bonus: charged moves would be nice but those are a lot more obvious in nature (i.e.: earthquake). All the ice moves sorta look the same. Something with fang or claw are a bit easier. Or do people just guess everyone's using the same move if they use a certain pokemon. It's really sneaky when some use a heavy damage move vs a charging move and you can't tell them apart.
While TH-cam only allows a like. I think they should dole out Extra Likes! Like a limited amount per month. You deserve an extra like on this! I feel sooo many don't know these things. And while I like the wins, I appreciate a good loss! This vid will promote me having more good loss scenarios. Better opposition, means I get better. Or die trying🤣 This is a Fantastic Vid!
@24:30 I've actually had about a dozen ties in this season alone. (I play A LOT OF PVP THOUGH) and they've never said I TIED. About 8 times it says (Good Effort) and like 4 times it said (You win) so maybe ties aren't a thing now Daxi? Maybe they were in the past but now in the event of a tie it just: uses a RNG type system to pick a winner? Or go by current lvl or elo? Or whoever has the highest current win streak takes the loss, or highest losing streak takes the loss. I'm actually very confused by how for certain, 2 trainers last mon can faint at the same time, and yet the game picks a clear winner (and the other trainer who did just as good and KO'D all of their opponents mons ALSO loses and with that loses ELO, REWARDS, END OF THE SET DUST, K/D RATIO, AND BRAGGING RIGHTS) that's kinda VERY CONFUSING and disheartening for GBL especially at or after rank 20 once you start to GAIN/LOSE elo.
I play more for the fun I am using (in great) Alola marowak -fire spin -bone Club -shadow ball. Stoutland -ice fang -wild Charge -crunch Kingdra, (Mine does count as a dragon type, so not afraid of the electric type) -Waterfall -Octazooka -blizzard and whit this team i have ca. 50/50 win rate.
Me too. I do a few battles once in awhile just to have fun because getting rank 20 you aren’t even guaranteed a legandary Pokémon. If you we’re guaranteed one I would definitely try and get rank 20

First and I love u content keep on going bro
U not first
Phenomenal content, thank you so much for sharing!
4:03 also with the water and fire you can just hold your finger on the screen and you will automatically hit all the bubbles.
Poison too
@@bertram1724 I hardly do any poison charge moves but I’ll try it out next time I do for sure!
This was very helpful thank you... and I subscribed to the other TH-cam for more pvp tips
I learn some things that I don't now. I hit ice last 2 sezons, but I will try to get a veteran this season. Good job btw. Realy good video.
This is a great video for people struggling with PVP, especially the explanation for PVP IVs because I never know how to explain this to people lol great work dax!! Also I never top left, I just can't bring myself to do it 😔 even if I know I'm squashed
Best POGO PvP video ever created bar none.
sometimes it is favorable to debuff yourself to give the opponent less farm, for example dragonite against togekiss
The bar around the health of the mon will also denote the effectiveness. In case a player missed the wording. White neutral, red Super effective, blue resisted
Pokedaxi doing Ottawa Proud
When poke daxi drops a new video🤩
This video is old dude
Great video. I'm not very good at pvp because I don't really like doing it but I need to get better, and this helped lots.
I had no idea about the shield block colors 😵
Good explanation!
Huge thanks for these tips and teaching aids. So much to learn but hopefully get to ace this season
this was incredibly well constructed
Pokemon is my second favorite anime, yet I have never played Pokemon Go😭 I wanted to get started with the game and pvp, so this helped. Thanks😁
This is fantastic!
Phew! I thought I was fine but learnt a lot! Maybe I can finally get out of Ace this season
Thank you. I'm a level 50 but I usually do just the bare minimum to get elite tms. Now I will try to get a bit farther then 20.😁
Keep up the good work bro 👍
Solid info🤙🏽
Hardwork bro love it
Great content
An "Earthquake sending a opponent flying" is actually pretty funny 😂
Great video dax, how is Steph these days?
It’s a long road for Steph…. A lot for him to get used too. But he has an amazing team a d lots of support to help him along.
@@pokemama9317 that's great
Is there a video that contains all ~70 fast move animations so you can identify what they're using so it can be counted?
Massive video that needed an update. you got so much good points in one video
Thanks Professor Daxi! With you help, I'm sure I'll become a Pokemon Master.
Another banger Daxi
I remember when I predicted this video In your chat daxi 😂
@24:30 I've actually had about a dozen ties in this season alone. (I play A LOT OF PVP THOUGH) and they've never said I TIED. About 8 times it says (Good Effort) and like 4 times it said (You win) so maybe ties aren't a thing now Daxi? Maybe they were in the past but now in the event of a tie it just:
uses a RNG type system to pick a winner?
Let’s go Dan!
I love your channel brother keep it up
Great video
is there a website for best teams? as Dan mentioned to have double resist in the back for the lead pok
Learnt about shield colours, thanks dax
i like the slight voice crack at 11:50
wow im a legend player, but i never noticed that the color of the shield is different if it blocks a super effective/resisted move
haha thats crazy to me, ive known since i was awful at the game but i knew my types from the main series
@@givemeyourarms i always know that a blocked move is super effective or not, so i didnt pay attention
@@vszly same, I also realise it now
How do I get the gladion items? I know it’s from pvp but I just don’t know.
I play more for the fun
I am using (in great)
Alola marowak
-fire spin
-bone Club
-shadow ball.
Stoutland
-ice fang
-wild Charge
-crunch
Kingdra, (Mine does count as a dragon type, so not afraid of the electric type)
-Waterfall
-Octazooka
-blizzard
and whit this team i have ca. 50/50 win rate.
Me too. I do a few battles once in awhile just to have fun because getting rank 20 you aren’t even guaranteed a legandary Pokémon. If you we’re guaranteed one I would definitely try and get rank 20
how much do you trust pvp IV estimations from apps like Pokie Genie?
Danottawa really good at team building 👍👍
Way to spoil it...geeeze
Your the best like no One ever was
