  • If your Miata’s shifter is sloppy, you’ll want to consider installing a shifter rebuild kit. Thanks to the team at TrackPrep Performance (www.trackprepp...) for sending me their rebuild kit that fits my 2001 NB2 Miata with a 5-speed. The kits will be different depending on generation and the amount of speeds so be sure you select the right one.

    GREAT video, thanks for posting!
    Exactly what I needed.
I'm not saying my 200,000 mile+ 99 NB needed a shifter overhaul.... but would you believe the plastic cup under the small ball was completely GONE???
I could not quite duplicate your vise grip setup, so I found that it wasn't hard to drive the front pin forward with a drift punch and back in with a large vice grip.

Thanks for watching and glad I can help out with the video. The pin was definitely tricky to get out but glad you were able to get it with the punch. How's the shifter feeling now?

Well, TBH the shifter has a little less wobble now, but even before the rebuild it was light years ahead of my classic Jag and Ferrari shifters! One BIG improvement I did make: I added an extra piece of insulation from the outer ring of the big rubber shift boot to under the carpet on both sides of the console. MUCH quieter now. :)

To be honest, it never felt bad. Light years ahead of my classic Ferrari and Jaguar! But yes, less slop now. What made a YUUGE difference was an extra piece of insulation from the outer ring of the big rubber shift boot to under the carpets and under the dash and console. SO much quieter!
