I always understood that 12 was the number of completeness, while seven is the number of covenant. In Hebrew, the word for seven also means agreement or covenant. This is why when Abraham and Abimelech agreed that Abraham had dug some well, they 'sevened' themselves, which was a ritual involving seven lambs.

Good works along with faith and right intention help us to stay in God's sanctifying grace and aid in our justification (sanctification) which leads to salvation. So just as willfully sinning pulls us away from God and salvation, willfully doing good works keep us close and pull us towards God and salvation. However, good works alone do not merit anything. Also, the size and quantity of your good works do not merit any more or any less salvation, as long as they are done in love and for the sake of God's will. Eventually doing good works can become just like breathing and are only done in love and for God's will which is the heavenly and resurrection life.
