I Bought A *WORKING* Scissor Lift From The Auction But They LIED... It Doesn't Work

  • The shop build and especially the MegaTV build have been on hold for a long time. To access the ceiling or lift 65lb TVs 15ft into the air you have to have a scissor lift. The one I typically use is going to be tied up for a long time, so I jumped on an auction site, and bought a JLG 2630ES that was ready to roll for a great price. When I showed up it was NOT ready to go at all, it didn't move and they forked it onto the trailer so I could get it home.

    Common Questions:
    What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
    What do I do for a living? Make TH-cam videos.
    Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
    Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
    Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

    Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
    Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
    Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
    Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
    Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

    If you got a JLG for cheap, and that was the only fix that it needed, NEVER sell it. You hang on to that thing until your warehouse falls down around it.

    When you chain something to your trailer ALWAYS wrap the chain around itself near the load, it stops it from running along the chain. If you had hit a big pot-hole the machine could have tipped or even slid across the trailer, the forces can be huge. If the chain is wrapped around itself the tie point will not let the load move, whereas how you have it it can just slide along the chain, even if the chain is tight. Just a bit of advice from an old Australian truckie, take it for what it's worth, if you wish.

    • @tiredoldmechanic1791
      @tiredoldmechanic1791 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You weren't legally chained down. I wondered if someone would mention that. Technically that would count as a 2 point tie down when you are required to have 4. If a chain broke or a binder came loose only one chain would be holding it. You can use one long chain but it would have to be hooked to itself so it acts as two different chains. th-cam.com/video/46hKizooXDk/w-d-xo.html

      agreed. i was working for a company and was in charge of maintaining the company material handling equipment as well as manufacturing equipment. we had a genie lift that was good, but at full extension it always felt a little tippy and unstable.. so when it came time to replace the batteries i did an upgrade. it originally had 6 trojan t105 6-volts in it as specified by genie as the correct battery, but i did some measurements and found that taller trojan l16 batteries would fit and each battery was 45 pounds heavier. with the new batteries not only was it more stable but the guys loved the fact that they could run it all day long without having to stop to charge it for awhile when the batteries got low.

    Good lift there. One thing I'd check because nobody ever does, is the gear oil in the drive hubs. There's planetary gears inside. Check to make sure they have oil, or better yet just drain and refill them. Very simple and uses simple 80w-90 or similar gear oil.

  • @mckrackin5324
    @mckrackin5324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a good purchase. We (the company I retired from) had four of these exact model. Rented them for a year and then bought them dirt cheap from the rental companies. Three from United and one from Sunbelt. Renting is better in the field because they just come and replace it if it stops working. Less down time. And yes, a single wire can cause a lot of problems. Ours always sit in the rain, snow and ice for years at a time so there are occasional problems.

    Where I live, you are required by law to do and document a daily inspection on any lift equipment. Usually the hours run gauge is in with the batteries as well, so you have to open in up to write that down as well. Would never see the battery terminals end up looking like that. Looks like it was a rental... it should at least be serviced by them once in awhile as well. BTW, these are kind of easy units to operate, which can lead to a bit of laid-back approach. Had one unit that would move around even while extended up. My heart kind of dropped when a wheel crushed through a covering on a floor opening. And on another job-site I wasn't on, we had a sub-contractor found on-site who perished after pinning himself. Make sure people on the ground are trained on how to lower it from the ground, it's amazing when something breaks or something how long someone can be stuck. Also, there's a reason the location of lanyard attachment points are where they are.

    I love it when it's a quick easy fix after all. I just spent hours over Saturday night trying to figure out why my new uber 12 core computer stopped booting after I installed a program and it needed to reboot to finish the installation. I did a bunch of stuff, repaired the boot stuff, it would boot in safe mode to 10 pro but wouldn't completely boot regularly except occasionally. I finally remembered the next morning the mouse refused to work in the bios setup screen and I remembered the Logitech wireless USB chip got moved to the rear ports. I moved it back to one of the front ports and it booted perfectly. My box was loosing the connection to the mouse and keyboard from the farther away USB ports and just looping as it tried to find the missing keyboard and mouse it was trying to load🤬
    Super easy fix but took hours to find because it didn't register with me at first.

    Look for when equipment rental places sell or even better, auction off equipment. Bought a light tower with less than 1500 hours. Previewed the auction, found it fully fueled, and started it. Ran fine. There were several at the auction. Picked up mine for less than $1000. Mostly use it for the 6KW generator. There are titles on trailers, including light towers, so ensure you can get the title when buying those at auction. Without a title, getting a plate and registration is difficult.

    Close to my experience with a used Honda generator, buyer says recently serviced, then dumbo her finds the oil overflowing out of the gas tank, buyer beware and some sellers lie. Great talk through on this , thanks 👍 solution for me a new carburetor. It could have been much worse.

    Hey Pro-Tip if you ever need batteries for equipment like this O'Reilly has them for order and they usually are the cheapest around. Specially with a corporate account.

    By welded it means the contactor fails and eventually the internal contacts weld shut which the ecu will detect but it will keep the motor running constantly until you use the battery disconnect to shut it off. Newer contactors use an internal diode which the cheaper aftermarket ”NAPA” brands won’t have so keep it in mind when buying parts via Amazon! 👍🏻

    Thanks for showing the pitfalls of buying at auction in the real world. For all you know that lift did work when parked but some other bidder pulled that wire to chase other buyers away.

    The fact that you picked it up from a Sunbelt Rentals place tells me you bought it from the same auction site I've gotten various power tools from. I've actually never had a problem other than shipping ALWAYS being more expensive than what I get quoted by shipping companies.
