It’s such a great example of how family can bond and grow and be there for each other and have real LOVE. Not navigating social norms for the sake of politeness. But just... because they want to be there. I hope when my brother and I get to the stage of having kids, we make it work, have the cousins be there for each other. We know first hand how lonely it can be without much family to hold on to.

Emma Dynes I know, right? Like, my nuclear family is close and no one in my extended family is divorced and there’s not abuse and alcohol, so we’re doing pretty well, in theory. But... my cousins were either uninterested in me or jealous and I didn’t understand why they were mad at me (hindsight is 20/20!) and I always thought of my Aunt as “acting,” when she was being nice to me, and it fits, because she didn’t like any of my family. We didn’t spend any time together growing up, don’t speak outside of holidays, don’t even have each others’ numbers in our phones. One cousin calls if she wants something and that’s it. I’ve got my older brother and my parents, which is a lot more than a lot of people. But... I always wanted that feeling of family, the kinship. It’s not something you can manufacture, and I was never able to pretend well enough to really believe things were okay growing up, that I was in a ‘normal happy family.’ Just... the amount of excitement and love is something I was not prepared for. It wasn’t “oh another person means less attention for me,” or “how do I make myself important again,” just.. them being happy that he’s here. The looks of wonder and love were just too much for me. I really couldn’t handle it! I can only hope when my brother and I have kids we do it a tenth as well as the Ballingers.

I totally agree. He accepts who she is. Someone who has worked extremely hard for her career and he lets her do what she needs to do. He just tries to help her in the ways she loves instead of the ways he wants. So perfect for each other.
I love this. Letting everyone hold him, but in a controlled environment. There were only two kids in my family after me, but we weren’t really allowed to hold them. Not even touch them for at least a few months. I was under the impression that basically the whole baby was like the soft spot or something, because despite me being a very deliberate and careful kid, my Aunt was just convinced I’d destroy her kids if I got my hands on them. It made me kind of scared to be around them at all, because the reception I got about it was so off-putting. The other side of my family wasn’t near us so we didn’t see them basically ever, so I never really got used to kids or babies. I’m 28 and except a few times when I was about 7 or 8, I’ve never held a baby. Kudos for doing this in a way that doesn’t intimidate the kids; even well meaning decisions about things they’ll run into in life can have negative backlash for years. It’s so wonderful to see a family that actually acts like family.

I just really love Erik. He’s such a great match for Colleen. Their story is really such an example that joy can come through everything that happens in our life, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.
I totally agree. He accepts who she is. Someone who has worked extremely hard for her career and he lets her do what she needs to do. He just tries to help her in the ways she loves instead of the ways he wants. So perfect for each other.

I love this. Letting everyone hold him, but in a controlled environment. There were only two kids in my family after me, but we weren’t really allowed to hold them. Not even touch them for at least a few months. I was under the impression that basically the whole baby was like the soft spot or something, because despite me being a very deliberate and careful kid, my Aunt was just convinced I’d destroy her kids if I got my hands on them. It made me kind of scared to be around them at all, because the reception I got about it was so off-putting. The other side of my family wasn’t near us so we didn’t see them basically ever, so I never really got used to kids or babies. I’m 28 and except a few times when I was about 7 or 8, I’ve never held a baby.
Kudos for doing this in a way that doesn’t intimidate the kids; even well meaning decisions about things they’ll run into in life can have negative backlash for years. It’s so wonderful to see a family that actually acts like family.
