      He only mentioned them being on the lift since that's what the video is about, but they are also found in other areas. Must more common on wooden coasters, you will see antirollback devices at the top of hills where the train is traveling relatively slow. In the case that a train stalls (there is actually a video on YT of a train that stalled on Hades before it became Hades 360) it will catch on the device rather than falling backwards.

    The only roller coasters I’ve ever been on had chain lift hills. I’ve only ever been on two roller coasters, both located at Playland At The PNE. Before Playland’s Wild Mouse was closed and demolished, I went on it. It was my first time on a roller coaster. It scared me, but at least I learned what it was like. The only other coaster I’ve been on is a kiddie coaster called Kettle Creek Mine. The ride is only about 10 seconds long and requires two laps around the track to complete. There’s also a camera that takes your picture as you go down the first drop

    Good video, and great animation. Something you may find interesting, on many coasters the ARB system is not the first safety in case of lift stop. The gearbox delivers power though a sprag clutch, which prevents the chain traveling backwards under the weight of the train when the lift motor is not running. Ideally, this should prevent the train from rolling back and engaging on the ARB rack.

    2:26 Well that’s a good thing to have next to a lift hill. I’m talking about the sign that says “Remain seated and keep arms and legs inside vehicle at all times”. Those who ignore this important safety rule can get seriously hurt or even killed. People have stood up on Coney Island’s famous Cyclone roller coaster and plummeted to their doom. After the last incident of this happening, the park’s staff placed a “Remain Seated” sign at the top of the lift hill

    Quick question: I've ridden Green Lantern at SFGADV and whenever I see the trains rise up and let go of the lifthill it's this loud sound metal banging and clicking, is that due to the multiple amounts of chain doug's being used to carry the train up the lift.
    Imo the sound is very satisfying.

    On a lot of modern coaster, you can't even hear the anti-rollback dogs, why exactly? Are they retracted by the tension on the chain dog or how does it work?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ARB on the train can be magnetic, causing it to remain in an upright position as the train goes forwards quickly. When the train slows down, or stops, the ARB falls back down and makes contact with the track once again :)

  • @ilikenintendoalot5286
    @ilikenintendoalot5286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another kind of lift hill is the magnetic lift hill. it Utilises Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) of Linear Induction Motor (LIM) technology to haul the riders up the lift hill at a high pace and it can get the riders up to speed quickly. Found on Battle Star Galagctica, California Screamin' and Maverick, it uses the same technology as a magnetic launch only with an anti-rollback system of some sort. This useful as it can get the riders up to the top very quickly however, it has larger running costs than the other lift hills. Another kind of lift hill as well is the drive tyre lift hill. Found on most junior coasters it utilises drive tyres to get the train up to the top by propelling the train forward (at a slow pace, of course) with pairs of spinning, high-friction tyres that catch on to a piece of metal that hangs under the train and gets caught in between the two tyres. The advantage of this are that you can have curved lift hills, largely increasing compactness. The disadvantage however, is that it requires quite a bit of force to propel the train up as there is a large amount of friction between the tires and the piece of metal COMBINED with the anti-rollback system.

    As a bit of a geek but not someone in the know. I have always wondered why on rides such as the Smiler and Saw the ride, when the cars reach the lift hill they cone to a complete stop whilst the chain is still rotating. The chain then stops and the car engages. Seems like there is a fancy mechanism going on.

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gerstlauer thrill coasters, like the ones you mentioned, use a chain dog which pushes the train up the lift hill. Therefore, the cars stop at the base of the lift to allow for the chain dog to come into contact with the train, then it begins the ascent.

  • @Tomathana
    @Tomathana 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great knowledge video. I however am missing some facts. Forbexample, what about the system that prevents the chain from breaking when a train connects, like the gears and weights that can be seen at the bottom of a B&M coaster (Silver Star is a good example)

    What causes the train to disengage from the chain lift? I'm pretty sure every car on the train gets attached at the bottom but the entire train always disengages and gets faster before the last car is at the crest of the hill let alone at the end of the chairlift, but not so soon that the middle of the train starts accelerating at the apex of the 1st hill. How exactly does that work?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The train can move forward up the lift hill under its own energy, but cannot move backwards. Therefore as the train crests the hill, the chain dog moves up and over the slots on the chain, until it has cleared it. :)

    Actually the train is pushed up the lift rather than pulled. The dog drops into the gap between the links of the chain and rests against the lower barrel of the link thus allowing the chain to push against it.

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pushing, or pulling, is relative to the position of the viewer. If you were standing at the top of the light hill, the chain would be pulling the train up the hill as it comes towards you. The animation hopefully clearly showed how the chain mechanism works, which should avoid any confusion. :)

    what's the point of slowing the chain down rather than stopping it?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not too sure. I'd imagine it uses less power and creates less wear and tear to do so.

    even with the existence of anti-rollback features, the chain lifts still scare me on taller coasters because they are so steep.

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, but sometimes that's one of the reasons for building such a tall ride! ;)

    Do the ride operators in the station control when the chain dog engages and disengages?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chain dog engages and disengages automatically when the train connects or leave the lift hill. Nothing is required from the ride operators :)

    What about vertical lift hill rollback?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This depends on the lifthill. Often the chain dog method is still used. However, Gerstlauer use magnets of their Infinity coaster model to slowly and safely bring the train back towards the ground if the chain does fail :)

    how would a shuttle lift hill on the boomerang coasters work?

    • @coasterbot
      @coasterbot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, I have no idea. There is a manual chain release which causes the chain dog is disengage to it reaches the peak of the lift hill.

    • @ilikenintendoalot5286
      @ilikenintendoalot5286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok. maybe it has something to to with the extra pair of wheels at the back of the train

    • @ilikenintendoalot5286
      @ilikenintendoalot5286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      after taking a look at a boomerang coaster in planet coaster i figured out the answer!
      what happens is that once the train reverses out of the station, it couples up to a powered car. that powered car then pulls the train up to the point of the lift hill where the slope becomes uniform where it connects to a catch car - one that is an actual car. the catch car has a cable attached to it. once all connections are made the train gets reeled up to the top of the lift hill. then the powered car and the catch car are decoupled, making the train roll down the hill. the train traverses the track and then goes up a chain lift hill that is the same hight and incline as the catch car one. what makes this chain lift interesting is that it does not have any teeth. once the train is close to the dead-end, the chain lift deactivates causing the train to roll down the hill, traverse the track backwards go through the station without stopping. the train rolls up the lift hill, stopping about halfway up, then it rolls down into the station and the ride ends. once the ride stops the powered car and the catch car return to their original positions. for a portable coaster, the vekoma boomerang is quite complicated
