Johnny Olson's passing on October 12, 1985 was also among the stories on a variety of local newscasts all over the United States on October 12, 1985 and nationwide on CNN (10-12-1985), the ABC News Weekend Report (10-12-1985), CBS News Sunday Morning (10-13-1985) and Entertainment Tonight (10-14-1985). And Rod was doing double duty announcing on both PYL and TPIR once Rod became the permanent announcer in early 1986, he even had to take some time away from PYL during 1986 to rest his voice
Gene Wood was the primary interim announcer for several months, while they tried out potential permanent replacements (including Roddy) for week-long runs in between. Wood was the first asked to immediately step-in mainly because his voice was most familiar to TV audiences, second only to Olson himself.
Johnny was the best of the best on The Price is Right and Match Game. "Get Ready to Match the Stars!".. I believe he created "Come On Down!" On the original shows he said "Stand up"

an end of an era in so many ways, because "the announcer" sadly seems to no longer a beloved role the way it used to be.
He was simply the best.
Johnny "O", a true legend.
How many shows did Johnny Olsen already tape when this death announcement aired?
I can’t really say for sure, but I think Johnny’s final shows aired up until late November of ‘85.
The rest of the season probably. I don't know.
He still had at least a months' worth of episodes including that of the nighttime version (hosted by Tom Kennedy).
rthI would guess between 6-8 weeks worth.I attended a taping in 1996 which aired about six weeks later. Also Alex Trabek taped 35 unaired episodes (about seven weeks worth) of Jeopardy when he passed.
On your description, Johnny Olson is not the host of The Price Is Right, he's the announcer of The Price Is Right. Can you fix the description, please?
Johnny Olson's passing on October 12, 1985 was also among the stories on a variety of local newscasts all over the United States on October 12, 1985 and nationwide on CNN (10-12-1985), the ABC News Weekend Report (10-12-1985), CBS News Sunday Morning (10-13-1985) and Entertainment Tonight (10-14-1985).
R.I.P. Johnny.
Johnny Olson was the best!
👍🏻
And George Gray is pathetic!!!
I remember watching this. I stayed at home from school that day. He had such a distinct voice, kind of took a while to get used to Rod Roddy (though his name was fun to say to us bad kids).
God bless them all...
As an 80's kid, the death of Johnny Olson reminded me of the death of Mr. Hooper.
They had a lot of shows in the can already. I swear this memorial ran for months!
RIP Johnny Olson. I heard Herb Alpert's song Route 101 in the second showcase.
Born in 1910!!
WHAT. ED MCMAHHON. WAS. TO. JOHNNY CARSON. JOHNNY. OLSON. WAS TO BOB BARKER SAD. ALL ARE. GONE. BUT. T.V. KEEPD. GHEM STILL CLOSE DEAR TO OUR. 💕 HEARTS
Johnny steps down and Rod Roddy steps into the booth it will be that way until 2003 when Rich Fields and George Gray take over as announcer.
And Rod was doing double duty announcing on both PYL and TPIR once Rod became the permanent announcer in early 1986, he even had to take some time away from PYL during 1986 to rest his voice
@@wns808 Press Your Luck ended its original run in September 1986, so yes, there would have been some overlap when Roddy was announcing on both shows.
Gene Wood was the primary interim announcer for several months, while they tried out potential permanent replacements (including Roddy) for week-long runs in between. Wood was the first asked to immediately step-in mainly because his voice was most familiar to TV audiences, second only to Olson himself.
Classic TPIR. Love it.😊
Before Bob got into the whole "Pets" thing.
He started a few years earlier, just not every episode
He'd been closing the show off & on with the message since 1982 - and he got into the whole "pets" thing in 1979.
A great voice & an positive attitude
Legend never was as good
Wow! The song playing in the background is Route 101 by Herb Albert❤❤❤❤❤
My grandmother passed away herself two months later (12-28-85) at the age of 71.
Johnny was the best of the best on The Price is Right and Match Game. "Get Ready to Match the Stars!".. I believe he created "Come On Down!" On the original shows he said "Stand up"
And his stint on the Narz version of Concentration as well
While I think Rod Roddy did an admirable job (especially in the early seasons before illness zapped a lot of his energy), Johnny Olson will always be the announcer I associate with The Price is Right. His love for the show came through in each episode.
Johnny's impression of Boy George was the best! 😂
This show got me through a lot of Sick Days and Playing Hookie from Elementary School! ..
RIP Johnny, BOB
My childhood memories are of bob and bill in the morning lol.
