  • Used in WW1 and post-war Italy, the song has become a popular patriotic song, and was an unofficial anthem of Italy from the start of the civil war in 1943 to the adaptation of the current anthem in 1946.

People that write "Italy switch side" and similar don't know anything about history. Every agreement between Italy and austrian empire was broken before by the austrians many times. Continuing in an agreement that the other part didn't respect would be an humiliation. Morever Austria and Germany started the war, the agreement didn't forced Italy to support them if they started the war, only if they were attacked.

    • @wolfgang_76xx32

You should throw away your books and learn real history. The chief of the austrian staff was totally right, when he said in 1907. Strange - our ally italy is building fortresses along our border - don't trust these liars!

The situation is always quite more complex than memes.
Italy and Austria had a mutual defense agreement.
In practise Serbia agreed to almost all terms and conditions forcefully imposed by the austrian empire over them for the assassination if the prince (even if it wasn't their fault) including quite a lot of humiliating terms. Almost everyone including italy saw that a as a more than fair way for Serbia to make amends but Austria had a casus belli at hand and they wanted to look strong to the other major powers, in part thinking that it wouldn't snowball into a world war as it did. Italy clearly told Austria that if they attacked on such a flimsy casus belli when Serbia accepted almost all their terms they would not consider it a defensive war but a war of aggression and not get involved. When Austria declared war regardless of the public opinion of other major countries being against them that effectively was one of the major reasons behind ww1 as for the Russians/french/Brits ignoring the invasion would have been a sign of weakness. If Austria instead of wasting a long time over the peace terms with Serbia invaded immediately after the assassination most likey other countries would have seen it as justified and italy would have likely ended up on Austria side if one of the allies still declared war. The time the austrians spent making humiliating request to Serbia and than still not accepting a peaceful solution is what effectively involved everyone in the war as the peace terms were discussed with international legations.

Yes, but you also miss that Austria-Hungary was incompetent at remaining allies with Italy. The funniest thing is that the Italians in that time, they voted for to enter the war with the entante or to remain neutral, just saying how Austria-Hungary was hated. Austria-Hungary treated better fucking Bulgaria.

    🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Muti passaron quella notte i fanti,
    tacere bisognava e andare avanti.
    S'udiva intanto dalle amate sponde,
    Profughi ovunque dai lontani monti,
venivano a gremir tutti i suoi ponti!
    sfogarsi e tripudiare come allora.
"No!" Disse il Piave, "no!" Dissero i fanti,
    risorgere Oberdan, Sauro e Battisti.

P.S. I left some things, like the request by italy to have dalmatia, north veneto and others from Austria. But your point is technically right.

@Alfa&Omega 00000 When two countries, both not too strong, fight one another without help from friends, it is usually common that each will win some of the battles. In the case of Austria vs. Italy, the Italians will have to wait for someone like Garibaldi, or Cadorna. :)

    • @FranzKrommer

@Alfa&Omega 00000 Italy won also in 1859 and 1866, but always with "a little" help from some strong friend. As for the future, if the Austrians become too offended by being ruled by Italians (maybe after the Habsburg restoration, which will probably increase the patriotic feelings), and / or if Austria allies with other "underdogs" like Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Finland and Ireland, it is difficult to predict things. And of course, the Austrians can return to the way of guerrilla, which proved quite effective in the late 1950's and the 1960's.

My both grandfathers and great grandpa in WW I served with Austrian-Polish Regiments: k.u.k Inf Reg No 56 and No 20. After they defeated Russians by late 1916, they were transferred to the Italian front. Both regiments came from the Polish Highlands. 56th Inf Reg did receive full Alpine training with Kaiserjaegers in Tyrol..The 20th had to learn the hard way on their own. All three of them did survive WW I and the Polish - Soviet war of 1919-1921, but only one did survive WW2.. My Mom's father.. grandpa served with 56th Reg on Piava-Isonzo front.. and he was telling me stories: most brutal warfare of the Great War but not for the ferocity of fighting but for the conditions.. he was telling me that on our side were the Tyroleans, Italian-Tyroleans, Slovenians,Poles .. against them Italian Alpinis.. but ALL of them were the HIGHLANDERS respecting each other.. more of them died from the avalanches then from the enemy's fire.. And when the Avalanche came down.. at least at few occasions they would drop the rifles, grab the shovels and run to rescue the victims regardless of the nationality.. from BOTH sides of the front lines ..

probably my favourite patriot/historical song about my country, although the lyrics really is an embellishment of what happened:
    “Il Piave mormorava,
    Calmo e placido, al passaggio
Dei primi fanti, il ventiquattro maggio”
the Piave river wasn’t the nearest towards the Austro-Hungarian border, there was the Tagliamento river and the more famous Isonzo.
    “L'esercito marciava
    Per raggiunger la frontiera
Per far contro il nemico una barriera”
the kingdom of Italy was, at least in the first phases of the war, an attacker.
    “Ahi, quanta gente ha vista
    Venir giù, lasciare il tetto,
Poi che il nemico irruppe a Caporetto!”
this is maybe the more historical accurate line. Many, many people abandoned their homes after the break at Caporetto, seeking shelter over the Tagliamento river, but that line was broken up north by german and austro-hungarian forced, forcing people and soldiers to go past the Piave
Im sure that a deeper research will find other contradictions.
Think about le last lines of the song:
    “La Pace non trovò
    Né oppressi, né stranieri!”
When there is a famous saying about that victory, which is the “Vittoria Mutilata” by Gabriele d’Annunzio

    • @davidedavid2893

@Casteddu This can be compared to the cases of Russia and Romania - both fighting of the winning side while losing themselves. But the treaty with Russia was forcefully annulled by the Allies, and the mischievous Romanians reentered the war on the penultimate day, when only the distant Germany remained on the other side.
