  • I hope you find this patch demo useful. I love how it unlocks the DFAM as a proper, tuneable melodic instrument!
    Big thanks to Reddit user Systemvaz ( / systemvaz ) for this great patch tip. Hopefully my video explains it reasonably well.

    I've got my beatstep wired up like yours in this video, but it seems like as soon as I patch anything in at all from the beatstep to the DFAM, I'm not longer hearing any sound at all from the DFAM. Whether I run the sequencer, hit trigger button, or play a pad on the beatstep. I'm not sure what I'm missing!

    hey guys anyone here with dfam and keystep? im trying to send the clock from the keystep and keep sequencing dfam with its internal sequencer, anyone has leads?

    When you have your Beatstep Pro sequencing the DFAM, you can still sync it to an external MIDI source yeah? If I get the DFAM and BSP, I'll run sequences the same as your video explanation but want the BSP receiving MIDI clock from the Maschine or TR8S? & will the start/stop also activate if BSP is clocked to external Midi clock? I could get a Beatstep to use as sequencer for couple synths but don't want it to be the master. Is this an easy set up?

    hey man. there is a way that it wayyy more simple. and you can even get polyphony!
    BSP Pitch to VCO 1 CV
    BPS Gate to ADV/CLOCK
    BPS Velocity to Velocity
    (Pro tip: if you use a splitter/hub you can send the pitch also to VCO 2 CV and get polyphony!)

      hey thanks for the video! I think you should be using attenuators Arturia gate output
      is 12v ? Moog requires 5v
      Arturia says:
      Gate Outputs: 12V.
      If your destination device requires 5V, it will work and won't damage it.
      But in long term, we advise to use attenuators to avoid any risk of premature wear.
      Pitch CV Out range: 0 to 10V.
      The Beatstep Pro can't deliver negative pitch voltages.
      Velocity: 0 to 10V
      Please note that the velocity output voltage can be attenuated from the MCC

    I am thinking of buying a DFAM but the 8 step limit bothers me... can you use the Beatstep Pro to get around this limitation and make longer sequences? I guess you can patch the Arturia to velocity and tuning??

    • @DonDayglow
      @DonDayglow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neil Loughran sure can, although I didn’t mention it in this video these settings also allow for a 16-step program. The 8-steps is an awkward limit and I would honestly prefer 16 as standard, but I can’t recommend the dfam highly enough despite that. There really is nothing else like it

      There are a many ways to extend the DFAM beyond 8 steps. Some options...
      1. If you have a clock divider, step the trigger input 8 times faster than the adv/clock input, you'll now have a basic bass line where each note in the sequence is played 8 times before moving to the next sequence step (you can do the same thing on the BSP by changing the note lengths, so the clock is now a faster rate than the gate output).
      2. Set up a basic 8 step sequence on the DFAM. Now clock the BSP 8 times slower than the DFAM. The DFAM will run through the 8 step sequence, the BSP will then advance 1 step, transposing the original 8 step sequence.
      3. Turn the Seq pitch switch to off on the DFAM. Connect the gate output from the BSP to the trigger input of the DFAM. Connect pitch to the DFAM oscillators (or sync the second OSC, and just use CV1). Velocity to the velocity input, and you now have a playable monosynth (DFAM does not need to be running if you use the trigger input instead of adv/clock).
      It's modular, so there are always options. I have 2 DFAMs whose sequences are transposed by the keyboard out of the Mother 32 (DFAMs are usually clocked at different rates for extra fun). Its a really nice setup for those kind of bass lines from 70's/80's synth tracks (I feel love, bladerunner end theme, the chase, etc).

    Hey, thanks a lot. I got a question: I want to buy the Arturia KeyLab mkII which has no CV velocity out. So do you think all this is still possible? Have you tried without connecting the velocity out of the BSP and the velocity in of the dfam?
    Thanks!

    • @ewanhoozami
      @ewanhoozami 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This method wouldn't work, because it relies on CV to control pitch. But, you could use the keylab's trigger out to launch the DFAM sequencer.

    • @thorberg2192
      @thorberg2192 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam Hignell hey man, thanks. Actually it worked. Pitch out to the osc1 and the gate out to the clock in. So I can play the dfam now as an melodic synth. I did not need the velocity connection. But in the end, I’m limited with my possibilities to record this. The only way I can record my dfam is to connect it via gate with my behringer odyssey.
      Best, O

      According to the manual, the BSP runs a bit hot for the DFAM. But I took the chance and it's been absolutely fine for me
