  • Hey bookworms and bookmarks! It's the start of Booker Prize season 2024! Here are the 7 Debut Novels I have my eye on for this year's longlist! Which, if any, do you think will make the longlist this year? It is shaping up to potentially be a great Booker Prize year as many well-established, prize laden authors have eligible novels this year. However, I have my fingers crossed that at least a few debut novelists will sneak onto the 2024 Booker longlist. Let me know what your predictions for the longlist are in the comments!

I couldn't help put laugh at just how accurate you were when you said the Booker likes a divisive novel.
Just finished The Coast Road By Alan Murrin last night, reminds me of both The Bee Sting and How to Build a Boat... Maybe that's just because they're all Irish, but I think it's a good outsider.

The Coast Road! Not one on my radar, so thank you, I will explore!

happy booker season! last year was my first time following the prize from longlist to winner. seeing everyone's utter shock at the lack of big-names and the ensuing discourse was super fun haha. hoping to see similar surprises this year, though I'm not a huge fan of the Cunningham myself.
i had yiyun li as a professor in college where she taught a class on "the short story". she was one of the best instructors i've ever had. booker hype aside, i hope she's doing okay. she lost one of her children seven years ago to suicide (inspiring much of her recent work), and I read recently that she lost her other child to suicide in February of this year. :(

Yes in researching her, through various interviews, I learnt her backstory and it is all rather sad. At one point, I wondered if she would pull out of judging the prize entirely this year.

I have a feeling 2 out of those 7 will make it to the longlist. I have no idea which ones, but your logic seems sound, and statistically and mathematically 2 feels like a reasonable estimate :)
As to other debuts, Kaveh Akbar's Martyr is a pretty strong and well-loved debut.

Interesting! Fingers crossed! I have missed you.
I haven't heard about any of the books you mentioned in video until the time I watched your video. I am really interested in the first book you talked about-maybe due to the Kurdish struggle.
    Good morning from Ibadan, Nigeria.

Even if none of these get onto the list, it’s still nice to hear about some debut novels Charlotte! Fingers are crossed at least one makes it! 🤞

Yes! My thoughts exactly Jo! Debut novels are always worth a video! 😄

As someone who enjoys shorter novels alongside short stories and novellas, I would be thrilled to see fewer tomes this year. But the list is always interesting and I always look forward to reading as many as I can.

I'm one of those unknown, debut novelists on this year's list. I hope it isn't dominated by these well established authors :-)
My book is on the goodreads list, currently sat in 21st place. I can dream!

Good Luck Peter! I'm confused, you think the 7 Debut novelists in this video are well established? Or you're referring to the vast amount of authors with eligible titles this year who are well established, often with previous Booker nominations?

    • @charlottemolloy
      @charlottemolloy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@BruntonpeteI think this is the first time I've had confirmation that a novel has been submitted by the publisher. Usually that isn't released. Exciting- thanks for sharing! 😁

I would be alongside the debut novelists from your video. I think myself, and those highlighted in your video, are up against some big hitters and established names. I feel like Charlie Bucket looking for that elusive golden ticket - not expecting much but hoping for everything.

Some really interesting titles here! Shanghailanders sounds really interesting to me! And How I Won a Nobel Prize sounds like a hoot! And Great Expectations does sound sooo Booker!

I got an ARC of Shanghailanders a few months ago and really enjoyed it, especially as someone new to living and working in Shanghai. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

I don't imagine it will receive much consideration, but I really enjoyed Brat, Gabriel Smith's debut novel which was recently released in the US.

Brat is one of the novels I've read in preparation for the longlist announcement. Unsure if it's "booker" enough. But I agree, an enjoyable read.

how I won a nobel prize sounds like it could be very funny and the julie min book also looks interesting as it may have a kind of sci-fi element starting in 2040 and going back to 2014⚛😀❤
