    In 1988 I started working as a Police Officer in Delaware. My Issued Sidearm was the 4" Ruger GP 100 identical to yours! The only issue I had was that when it rained (I was a Motorcycle Patrolman) that the wood panels in the grip would absorb the water like a Sponge! However, Ruger offered Polymer inserts as an accessory so I bought some. The accuracy at the Range up to 25 Yards was phenomenal with groups within 3 Inches (from a seated/supported position). Unfortunately, my Department switched to the S&W (or PoS) 6906 with so many malfunctions that S&W did a Total Recall and, unfortunately, my Police Department had sold the Ruger GP 100s... BUT they were offered to the Officers at the Switch Over to the PoS 6906 for a meager $100 each - I bought the gal I carried daily and continued carrying my Personally Owned Firearm while on duty until S&W sent us back Fully Functional 6906 9mm Pistols! The Ruger GP 100? Thumbs way UP!👍

      I never owned a GP100, but back in the early 70s I bought a blued 4 inch Service-Six, which was before the Security-Six. It too was built like a tank and could take punishment from any hot loads you wanted to run through it. Awesome gun for Sure!!

      I carried a 686 on patrol in 1988 and was happy with it, but preferred the 19 or 66. Then Glock took over about a year or two later.

    A blued GP100 was my first handgun. I fed it a steady diet of 125 gr UMC 357's. After a few years the forcing cone was flame cut up like the Grand Canyon. Eventually a crack formed in the forcing cone. Ruger offered to replace it with any GP100 model, my choice. Now I'm the proud owner of a stainless GP100.

    • @Don.E.63

      I had a similar problem with mine, too many hot 125 grain loads will eat up the forcing cone. Ruger is an awesome company to deal with, no questions ask, the day i called i had a shipping label and 2-3 weeks later a brand new stainless gp100 came in.
      So now the only 125 grain i shoot are 38 spl. 140s or 158s in 357 now.

      Stainless 4 inch .357 GP100 was my first handgun that I purchased. Loved it. Took it to the range every couple days for a few years with full power magnum loads (there was a range just up the street from work). Really liked buffalo bore loads. Ended up with lots of flame cutting on the forcing cone. I should have sent it back to Ruger for repair when it started to keyhole, but ended up trading for two other pistols. That was well over 10 years ago, but I still feel like kind of a jerk.
      Also, hiking up and down mountains in SE Alaska with that behemoth on your hip, got very tiring.

    The transfer bar does not block the hammer. Rather, it allows the hammer to transfer energy to the firing pin. When the transfer bar is down, the hammer cannot reach the firing pin. The transfer bar only rises when the trigger is pulled.

    • @wadevenerdi1060
      @wadevenerdi1060 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yep, interesting how many gun owners don’t understand that function. It is literally in the name, “transfer” bar. Transferring energy from the hammer to the firing pin. It means the trigger has to be pulled to fire the gun. Safest guns around, they aren’t shooting if you’re not pulling. Been running an SP-101 3” .357 as my carry since 2014. I could not recommend Rugers more highly! They are fantastic. It used to be Smiths were a little nicer, but with the barrel twist and the Hillary hole of recent years, they are just not as good anymore.

    • @burtonkephart6239
      @burtonkephart6239 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yea they are different!! Most revolvers S&W included use the cylinder stem to lock the cylinder in place . Ruger does not use the stem that way , in fact the only use for the stem is to push buckets out but no locking purpose at all ! The benefit of Rugers design is that it’s much tougher by the cylinder locking to the frame by the main cylinder arm not the stem !! In other revolvers which lock by the stem , the stem can EASILY get warped by rough usage and cowboying it!

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SP101, GP100, Redhawk, and Super Redhawk all use the cylinder crane with a half-moon tab to lock the cylinder to the frame when closed. It's stout and reliable and deals with anything you could hand-load all day long. One small niggle I have, wish Ruger would thicken the forcing cone all all of its double-action guns. S&W uses a nice thick forcing cone.

    This was our issued sidearm for 5 or 6 years in the Montreal police (4in .357 mag). I loved it but they changed it to the Walther pistol when revolvers were deemed obsolete by the national police school. I remember vividly just how well it sat in my hand, the grip was fantastic. The sights were also much tighter than our previous 38 special and even tighter than the Walthers. The trigger pull, well you describe it perfectly it was long and quite heavy but smooth and the gun was so well balanced it didn't take long before you got the hang of it, although it was harder for most women especially when trying to perform in the double tap drills. I always found reloading with it easy, the extraction rod was way stiffer than the ones in our 38s. It would have taken quite a hard hit to brake or bend it. I felt secure with that weapon in my holster at least until the bad guys started packing pistols ya know ?
    I almost forgot to mention ours had their hammers sawed off so no one could be tempted to use it in single action following a regrettable shooting in that fashion that took a life...
    Thank's for the memories man.

    • @SargentRay
      @SargentRay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@Thatboylitme I'm from Montreal Canada and when i started out as a cop handguns weren't that popular in the streets. I'm old enough to tell you i started patrolling in a time where fists where the weapon of choice, in the sense that being a tough guy meant being able to fight and it was quite an honour amongst criminals to beat a cop. They would have immediate "respect" when they went to jail if they had beaten a cop. But things changed at one point and carrying a gun suddenly became the way to go for the bad guys in Montreal. Especially for gang members. This is also a relatively new phenomenon in Montreal. Heck politicians still refuse to recognize there is a gang problem in Montreal or Toronto at this very moment. Of course there's always been criminal organisations here like anywhere else be it the mafia or the Hells angels but 30 + years ago they were way more discreet and their use of firearms were limited to their own realm with their hit mans. But (and this will hurt leftists' ears) Immigration became very big here in Canada and as you might guess all immigrants weren't hard working people willing to adapt to their new country. Many of them came with their own criminal backgrounds and way of life. The first gang problems i was quickly made aware of where the Jamaican drug dealer gangs. They were as violent as they get and with their drug trafficking came the use of handguns. This is really when we saw an emergence of guns in the streets for the first time. It coincides with the beginning popularity of Glocks pistols. Criminals if you didn't know it before also like to have the cool guns and the Glocks quickly became the norm. But it didn't stop there, we also saw a terrible increase of Uzis being used in drug trafficking. Remember that at one point the Uzis where just about the meanest gun around. We almost dont see them anymore, for criminals there are so many more easily concealable and reliable guns to carry than Uzis. In 1991, 92 Jamaican gang members were deported and that was the end of that, we never had a problem with that community after that. But other gangs quickly took over and they expanded their "expertise" far beyond local drug trafficking, in fact the made their place by doing other criminal organisation's dirty work. The jobs they would't do themselves they would gladly do it to gain territories and respect. Were talking about broad daylight shootings in public place, going into a police station and shooting a female officer in the face as a rite of passage and so on. That level of established authority challenging had never been seen before in my country and it was all Hell's Angels leader of the time Maurice "Mom" Boucher's plan to destabilize the very foundation of the judicial system. So like i said the reality of policing in my country changed dramatically at one point almost overnight in the grand scheme of things. That's when the National police school decided revolvers weren't appropriate for policing anymore. That's pretty much our story here, it can't be compared with the U.S' reality, for one we didn't have a prohibition era like in the U.S., where at that time criminal smugglers would already carry Thompson machine guns or similar full auto weapons. Then i'm sure i don't have to remind you here in Canada we do not have a second amendment so guns have always been far less popular with the exception of a strong community of hunters. I hope my lengthy text helps explain what i meant. Have a great day and safe shooting to all.

    SOOTCH -- another great video review. Glad to see you are featuring more family & friends on the range. Ruger GP100, SP101, Redhawk ... THE BEST ! The overall design of these revolvers is fantastic. Push button cylinder release and steel molding around the back of the cylinder looks great and functions IMO better than Colt & S&W [exposed screw]. Ruger revolvers are very easy to stage, as you demonstrated.

I know it will be reliable if the need ever arises. Watch gel tests with Hornaday to see what brutal power this round has. I don’t need 18 shots to stop the threat. If they get hit with one, they’re done.

      I would think Inherently stronger built would describe Rugers versus Smith. I don't think they are better built. Smith made guns like 686 and 629 to perform within the design specs of the caliber they were built in....and they have a superb track record, great triggers, balance etc. Rugers were over built....that's why you've seen custom offerings built on Ruger frames over the years. They could take more pressure than even the calibers they were designed for possessed. Some of the largest bore handgun calibers started life out of custom shops which utilized various Ruger frames for their exceptional strength. So in that regards they are STRONGER built...but not necessarily BETTER built. Both companies make exceptional revolvers in my opinion.

      I got a ruger with timing issues, brand new (2015 one). And there is an obvious quality difference between revolvers they put out twenty years ago and now. Great video. As usual, I am late to this party. The GP100 is one of those revolvers that I have always wanted. What mostly came down to me purchasing revolvers was price and need. When I was in law enforcement, I took my wife to pick out a handgun that she liked for those nights that I worked and she was alone with the kids. Of all the choices she had (and I would've bought her anything in the store) she picked out a Taurus p85 hammerless 5 shot 38. Whaaaat? And she is dead accurate with that thing. Anyway, later on in life, I was in the market for a multi-purpose revolver and came across a Taurus 605 at a perfect price. So I bought it. Once again, I was really eyeballing that GP100 but it would be too large for my purpose. Well, now I live on some acreage and wanted something for the truck and I finally bought the GP100 in stainless! I love this thing. It sits in a DeSantis Wild Hog holster and is with me wherever I go. It was between a Colt, a S&W, or the Ruger. Taurus makes a really good product for general purpose and we will always have one or two on hand. But this Ruger is just the real deal on quality.

      Idk what that Mickey Spillane move is but I guess your referring to cowboying or slapping it in there good yes ? But anyhow the Ruger design is different from ALL other designs in that the cylinder stem of the Ruger is NOT used as the locking apparatus of the cylinder, whereas in most revolvers it IS!! And in most revolvers where it is so , they can easily become warped or damaged by rough usage or slapping the cylinder in but probably not in the Ruger which is really a more improved and tougher more rugged design
