How to replace a headlight in 2012 Dodge Ram

  • My headlight went out in my 2012 Dodge Ram. On a visit to the dealership, I asked them to replace it (I had it there for an oil change that I prepaid for). They told me it would cost $330.00. I explained that I just needed the bulb replaced, not the headlight assembly. The service technician stated that it was the labor that made it cost so much to simply change the bulb. I said, thank you and drove away. I did discover during this video that the bulb was good, but the wiring harness is bad. Once I unplugged it, and plugged it back in, the headlight worked. So, now I need to replace the harness, but that will be in a later video. I did replace the bulb since I already had the assembly out, but I did not record that as I was rushing to get the job done.

    You just showed the hardest way to do this job. There is "No" need to remove the cowling and grill. You can reach the bolt with an extension .
    I recommend watching other video's that show the proper way to do it.
    This guy needs to watch them too.

      Don't take shortcuts. Do it right the first time. That's my advice. Ask an airplane mechanic.

      @@GebosGarage lol if using extensions were the wrong way of doing things I'd have to drop my transmission on my 135i just to replace a starter.
      We're talking about headlights here...not head studs.

    Idk what others are saying by accessing it from the wheel well. I tried it was to difficult to locate what bulb where they need to go taking the cowel off and the grill so much easier less than 5mins to do those and a few mins to change the bulbs and another few mins back on. That little up and down switch Ram didn’t need to do that. That’s way to extra. Thanks for the video I thought I was gonna take the whole wheel cowel off and work from that. Once I got to watch that cowel to be taken off and the grill it was a no brainer from there.

      It looks like he knows how... the bulb is replaced and reassembled, and it works, and it was done per the manufacturer instructions.
      Don't blame the everyday consumer for doing it correctly. Blame the engineers for making it a process or the dealership for the crazy price of over $300 to replace a bulb.

      @@GebosGarage I think it is safe to say that the manufacturer, put an access door in the wheel while they probably don’t want you to take the grill on the whole upper panel off.

    • @GebosGarage
      @GebosGarage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @trd4d That's just not accurate. You absolutely cannot, in any way, shape or form, access the bulb through the hatch in the wheel-well. That hatch serves one purpose, to reach the latch that secures the headlight assembly in place. But you're not the first or the last to make this statement. If I'm wrong (I'm not), go make a video and show the 70,000 people who have watched this video your shortcut, please. I say this sincerely. I'd love to know your trick. Show us, please.

    • @trd4d
      @trd4d 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a dozen videos showing what I said. I clearly said that you don’t need to remove the grill or the entire upper panel. All you do is access the rear latch from the access panel, and the front bolts by taking one pin out of the upper panel. The one pin only makes it easier. After watching the rest of the video, I see you used the access door anyway. So, removing the grill served no purpose at all.

    • @GebosGarage
      @GebosGarage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @trd4d Ah, I see. Yes, you have to get to the bolts. I misunderstood. I thought you meant I could get the bulb out through the access panel. 🤔 That would save time for sure. Thanks for your follow-up.

    Lol how is this one of the first videos that Google gives you for a bulb change? I didn't do any of what you said and got my old bulb out in under 10 mins that includes looking for a 10 mm and my long extension and that took about 9 minutes and 30 seconds. It's a valid effort ill give you that but you could do it so much easier and because of that this shouldn't be a recommendation by Google to fix or change a headlight

    • @GebosGarage
      @GebosGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Your way is another way to do it, too I suppose. The dealer wanted over $300 to replace the bulb. This is how they explained it was done... perhaps to justify the cost? Imagine if they did it your way with that speed and efficiency AND still charged $300? But listen, I can't complain about the dealership though. They just dropped a brand new Long Block in this baby for me.... covered under warranty... I know, I still can't believe it!

    Let's see you broke a clip, you spent probably over an hour struggling, your son asked if your going to break that too(LOL) and in the end you jiggled a wire and the light came back on... I would say $330.00 is a steal! Another great video!!

      Even a shop breaks things and doesn’t tell the customer believe it or not like who would ever look in the back of the light? Only the next person that takes it back out so yea rather be myself than a shop at least it’ll hold with the 2 bolts. And u learn from your own mistakes

    What a waste of time and completely incorrect. I have a 2012 Dodge ram 1500 and I changed my highlight bulbs in less than 10 mins. There is an access cover in the wheel well where you can access the light bulb. You can change it from the wheel well access cover.

    • @GebosGarage

      Will you show us, please? I like to learn new ways to do things. The locking mechanism that you access from the wheel-well is in the way of getting to the lightbulb assembly on this 2012 Dodge Ram.

      Looks like the plug on 2012 is a common problem. I wouldn't have known to look for that, thanks. Now I can take back my $100.00 bulbs. What a rip-off Dodge!

      Higlights bulbs its easy, but for Headlights you gotta do that, you gotta unscrew the Headlights frome the front

    • @GebosGarage
      @GebosGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not a fair statement, and I'll tell you why. I have previously changed both headlamps twice. So, by definition, I have experience.
      And, people who say you can change the bulb through the access panel in the wheel wheel, that's simply not accurate. That gives you access to the locking mechanism for the headlight assembly to unlock it so that when you do the job correctly, you can remove the headlight assembly to get to the bulb.
