There is a koi statue in the pond lab. U know where the diving bell spider was in the place with the scab? It is in a corner of that room next to where the spider spawns. There is also an aphid statue in the hedge lab, (on one of the tables) and a weevil statue in the haze lab (in the room with all of those explosives. It is located on a table) all of these unlock a mutation that makes it so u have a chance to steal an item from bugs (such as a spider fang from a wolf spider) some things u cannot steal tho and I'm not gonna say the example because it a spoiler.

You got more air because you killed the Diving Bell Spider. A number of things will refill your air when you kill them, such as Water Boatmen.
EDIT: also, you can see what the trinkets do by equipping them, then looking below your equipment to find the icon for Invincible Block. It will then give you a description of what it does.
