OMG Fly Bee! You’re my hero. Just fixed it myself for $19 with that capacitor on Amazon. So easy and this is not my wheelhouse at all. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. My garage door opener is a different model, but these general steps helped me replace the capacitor and now it's working great! Saved me hundreds of dollars. Thanks!!
I Searched "Genie screw drive just buzzes" and came right to this video and that is exactly what I suspected. Thank you so much for your detailed video. Perfect fix!
Thank you thank you thank you. I had this issue. I called a local service company to fix. It started with $1200 for a new door opener, and then they told me that, to use it, I would have to drop another $4,500 to replace the door (not that there was anything wrong, but that modern door openers wouldn't fit my older door. Thanks to your video, I fixed the problem for $12, saving me $5,687. Thanks!!!!
Thank you sir for very clear and concise instructions. I had the exact same problem and your step by step instructions helped resolve the issue in 10 minutes and saved me from a big expensive service call.

Ugh, sometimes, this state... Anywho, followed these instructions and had my garage door working in under 10 minutes for under $20. I even followed safety guy at top of the comments just in case and all is well, garage opens and closes strong. Thanks for the video brotha!
I love that you got your garage door to work again so quick, and for fraction of the cost. Yippie! Thanks for letting me know.. and I am glad this video served it purpose! Best wishes
This absolutely worked! My Model is a little older but it made the same noise. I opened the motor and my capacitor was corroded. I ordered a new one and used the tape technique. One note. The 4 wires are 2 yellows and two orange/Red. The capacitor has two sets of connectors each with 2 connectors. You should attach the two yellows to one set and the others to the other. Fly Bee - Thanks for the help with this. It saved me time and money!
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback and info about wires. Makes me happy to see my video served its purpose to help others facing the same situation. Thanks for taking the time to let me know this helped resolve your problem! Best wishes
Thank you SO MUCH! I was having the same issue, and wasn't wanting to install a new opener or call a repair person. Saw your video, made the same repair, and now for less than $20, the door is working fine again. As others have said BE SURE to take precautions around a capacitor like that.
I was at one of my Rental Houses today and I think it is the same issue! Needless to say, going by tomorrow to look at the Capacitor! Funny thing is I had an AC Capacitor failure at the same house (same Renter!) Going to keep my fingers crossed that this is the issue! Never thought I would become a Capacitor Pro!
Fantastic! my capacitor was fine but 1 wire had disconnected on its own due to vibration! Hardest part was unscrewing the cover that a previous repairman closed it so tight as if it had an evil genie inside.
I found my cap, 50-60 MFD tests @ 49.8---52.5 MFD. May test ok but I think it is going bad. No bulge, smell has gone away after 1 day of removing it. I will replace it and update you. Thanks!!
You are so kind to say this. I hope my video helps resolve the issue you are experiencing with your garage door. If you get a chance let me know the outcome. Thanks
I believe I have the same garage door opener. I no longer have the manual. How should the indicators at the door appear? Is one steady green and the other steady read or blinking red? Thank you sharing this video!
In reference to the two indicators / sensors that are located at the floor level on either side of the garage door channel, one is steady green and the other is steady red. This is their normal state when garage door is working without issues. I hope this helps.
Makes me so happy to know my video helped .. it served its purpose! Thanks so much for letting me know! If you have replaced the starter let me know the outcome. Best wishes
If the model number of the garage door motor is exactly the one I show, it is possible the person who replaced capacitor last time likely used an aftermarket capacitor or one they could find locally. You can also lookup the garage door motor specs online to see the correct part number of the capacitor needed.
I have the same problem but to my eye, the capacitor looks OK. Also, the motor tuns fine when the screw drive is disconnected. While it looked OK, I did replace the coupler and that dod not fix it. Could this still be the capacitor? if not, maybe the screw drive is binding? Any suggestions? I suppose despite the capacitor looking normal I could try to replace it first.
Good question. The answer sort of also depends on how old the capacitor is ... which just means whether it has higher likelihood to fail. When capacitor fails there is typically some leakage - you can remove the capacitor from the housing to see if it looks good. Worth the try but be careful handling the capacitor.
Hello and thanks for the tip. I had replaced the capacitor on my Genius Intelligent garage door and it fixed the problem for two weeks. It is now doing the same humming sound and not opening nor closing. Do you think it might be the circuit board that needs to be replaced? The system is from 1996. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you and merry Christmas.
If you have double-checked that nothing is blocking the sensors on either side of the garage door then the problem would be with motor or circuit board. Depending on the type of unit you have, it may be cost effective to replace the garage door opener set completely vs. paying for repairs. I saw some good deals recently on these units. Please look them up. I hope this helps.
Yesterday my door would only go halfway down, then reverse back open. This morning it wouldnt even open, only a hum. I opened it manually and I left it open all day. When i tried to close it this evening with the motor, it just hummed. I closed it manually. I pressed the button, and it still hums, even without the load of the door. I hope my capacitor is the issue....
SAFETY WARNING - ALWAYS discharge capacitor by using a metal screw driver touching across the terminals before touching! otherwise you may get a high voltage shock!
This is very important to charge the capacitor. You could mislead other people that this steps can be skipp! Actually after you discharge the capacitor with a screwdriver serve as a stunt, you should use a long nose pillar to pull the terminals. It is so scare that everyone can post some video on the internet and act as if these are the steps! This could cause harm to the public!
The capacitor does NOT hold a charge. Therefore you will not be shocked. Please disregard this old man's comment. Be sure to unplugged device before grabbing wires
My garage door is having this issue only when I try to open it. I get the hum, but If I pull the safety cord and disconnect from the motor then press the garage door button the motor works. I press the button again to stop it, re-engage the safety cord, then the door is operational again. Could that be the capacitor too? I'll take a look at it.
It sounds like the garage door motor does not have enough oomph / power when pulling the door up - likely a capacitor not providing enough power so worth checking the capacitor. also check the chain and whether it is in good condition. I hope it is an easy and inexpensive fix. Best wishes.
My genie screw drive opener is making that same noise it won’t open. I’ve changed the capacitor once over a month ago & it worked great. Then a few days ago it started making that sound & the door wouldn’t close. I bought a new capacitor but it’s still not working & still making that noise. Any suggestions?
You have checked that nothing is blocking the sensors that are on both sides of the garage door? Unplug the garage door motor from power, wait a minute and then plug it back in? Same issue happens when you press the garage door open/close button that is in wired and in the garage?
Hey I'm not sure if you can give me any tips but I also have a genie remote for my garage and it stopped working so I replaced the battery and it lights up when I click it but my garage door will not open at all and I have no other way of getting inside I'm not really entirely sure what to do I tried open the door manually and it seems like it's sealed shut.. any tips?
To open/close garage manually you will have to disengage the automatic chain. Please watch my video from count 2:50 to 4:20 that shows how to do this. To reconnect please watch from 7:50 onward. As for the red light, this happened a few times with my car's remote! and went away when I reset the remote to factory setting. Please reset and reprogram your remote to the garage door motor and see if that helps.
@@imemilywilliams In case the transmitter signal is getting interference - Turn off your home WiFi and see if that helps your garage door opening. Other option, hold down the lock button on the transmitter for 5 seconds and then try to open the door. Another option is to use a flex metal rod (open a metal dry cleaning hanger) to pull the red string inside garage - see this video: th-cam.com/video/EAk0t-D-_eo/w-d-xo.html If nothing else works then your local locksmith or garage door company can help.
I have a Genie garage door opener that hums and doesn't open. It uses a 18004B Capacitor which I replaced, it still hums and doesn't open. What should I do?
I am guessing you have sensed the sensors on floor level by the door itself, and also checked that the door was not accidentally disengaged / disconnected from the motor (mentioned on video count 3:00)?
In my case the humming sound was coming from the motor. Capacitor only provides power to the motor so to me it looked like capacitor was not providing power to motor causing it to humm. The very visible flux leak from the capacitor made it an easy decision for me to change it. If there was no visible leak from the capacitor I would have still changed it considering (a) I have had the same garage door motor and capacitor for more than 10 years (b) capacitor is more likely to fail from repeated use (c) cost of capacitor replacement is much less than calling a garage door repair person. Your situation and details are most likely different so proceed with DIY or calling a repair company - whichever you think would be best in your situation.
Mine hums and the light comes on and doesn't open. But if I release it and then click the opener it will grab and open and close it. Do you think its the capacitor?
When you release the safety pin and dis-engage garage door from the motor and then motor works but when garage door is connected to motor then it does not, then capacitor is likely going bad. I say this because the purpose of a capacitor in a garage door motor is to provide additional power boost to lift open the heavy door. In your situation the motor works fine when the door is disconnected but does not have enough power to lift the garage door when it is connected to motor ... which means the capacitor is not doing its job. I hope this helps.
reminder... be very careful touching those terminals on the cap. it can kill you if energized!! always de-energize first by crossing both terminals with a rubber handled screwdriver great video, thank you
I have 2 Remote garage door openers and I use only 1 regularly but after I used the other Remote (that i did not use for many years) the first Remote is not working! First I thought battery issue but after installing a new battery it is still not working, And after this the old one I did not use for years is Not aworking either!z, Can you Please help me. Thank you so much. It is very urgent issue to me.
If you have not yet reset the garage door opener motor and reprogram the remotes then definitely try it first. The reset button is usually on the motor and you see it when the bulb cover on the motor (that faces the front of garage) is removed. The one on your model may be different so please look it up. If you get a chance, let me know the outcome. Thanks
@@FlyBeee hello, thanks for replying. Do you have a video to do this? That would be of great help. What letters indicate model number for my Genie garage motor? In your video, there are letters starting with HP and then there is model number with letters begining with ACRG.. and resr. Which one is model number for genie garage motor? I am confused.
@@FlyBeee the remote is not programming. The red light reset on garage motor keeps blinking red for 30 seconds amd goes away. Pressing the remiote control to programm it is not working. Where can I buy a hew remote for genie garage motor?
@@jakeb8298 It is possible that your (or your neighbors) home wifi or devices like roku, nest may be messing with the garage door opener frequency causing it to not work. Power off home wifi and then check garage door opener / try to program it. To minimize radio frequency interruption some people had success by placing 2 ft by 2 ft piece of aluminum foil over the garage door opener (I am not kidding on this one!) Worth a try! If you decide to go the route of new remote: in US, Walmart and Home Depot, and in Canada the 'Canadian Tire' carries Genie and universal remotes.
@@jakeb8298 I don't have a video but from your other reply I think you found the correct way which is to press on the 'learn' button on the garage door opener, and when red light is on, within 30 seconds press the button on the opener. Pretty much all openers and HomeLink in vehicles are programmed the same way.

Mine made a Big pop when lowering if now it buzzes but won't open lights up and buzzes
Did you get a get it fixed or tried the capacitor replacement?
Jessica I have the same issue as yours.. any luck with changing the capacitor. Thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you kind sir
You are welcome! Best wishes
reminder... be very careful touching those terminals on the cap. it can kill you if energized!! always de-energize first by crossing both terminals with a rubber handled screwdriver
great video, thank you
Good advice. Thank you! :)
Didn’t work for me. I have a chamberlain
Oh, did you find the problem? and how was it resolved with Chamberlain?
