Doug, I watched this video one year ago and I want to thank you for introducing me to the best car I have ever owned. I flew from Houston the Seattle and purchased a 2013 Jag XJL 5.0 SuperCharged with 22,000 miles for $42K. These cars are absolutley amazing. My biggest suprise was the fuel mileage I got driveing back to Houston. My "Average" speed was 73 MPH and I got 29MPG! At 85 mph the engine was only turning 1800rpm. One year later and I am still amazed and appreciate the car as much as I did the first day driving it back to Texas. A big "Thank You".
this video also convinced me to buy an XJL!! I picked up a non-supercharged 5.0 model (I dont like factory boosted vehicles), for only 18k. Has 50k miles on it, and its not the London tan, its the orange-ish and black interior. Almost looks brown!!! I LOVE this car, and i was 3 days from buying a ford Taurus SHO for over 25k. So glad i ended up with this jag.

+James Franco scared words spoken by people afraid to live their dreams. Unreliable is not really a thing with modern cars these days. When considering the purchase price of BMW vs Lexus plus maintenance the maintenance cost is negligible. The boring Lex May cost $200/ year while the BMW costs $1000 a year in maintenance. Do you really care about $800 after a $50k investment so much that you will drive a grandma car? No thanks.
The XJ x351 has a flaw with the key and that is a oversensitive one-click button to accidentally open the trunk of the car which you can do with out even knowing. A nice feature on a rainy day...

Depreciation on Maseratis, Jags, and most luxury german cars is absolutely stunning and i love it. I bought my 2012 XF Portfolio w/ tons of options in March of 2016 for 40% of its original cost and it was still under its original factory warranty (which i used a couple times). Its incredible how little the average joe even knows about depreciation

This is definitely one of my favorite DeMuro videos - the level of humor is where I like to see these; everything down to the pretzels was great/hilarious - yet still the dude is tremendously informative!
In 2012 I bought an '09 Jaguar XF with a supercharged V8 for $35k. Great luxurious car for the price. Owned it for less than 3 years but in that time there was only typical maintenance such as brakes or tires and a few blown fuses. Oh, and it was fast. In high school it earned me the nickname of "that kid with the jag".
Mi Zhou I could make a cool story here but I'll just tell the truth and say my dad bought the car for me. But $400 monthly payments honestly isn't that hard to make. I'm currently making them on a Range Rover Evoque Coupe.
I've been looking at this car as a luxury cruiser. After a few hours of looking around, the general sentiment is that this is one of the most reliable Jaguars around.
Dear Doug, Today I committed the ultimate sin and made the incredulous decision to search TH-cam for a car review of a "2017 Jaguar XJ review". However, I used the search bar for those particular words only. After wasting countless time filtering through videos, having my ear drums nearly blown off by the music intros of some people, I finally came to my senses. I realized I should have came and searched the God of Car Reviews first before sinning and thinking I can find better on my own. Please accept my confession, forgive me, and continue to bless me with your videos. Thank you
@@abdulaleem7344 If someone wants to buy an XJ Jag... they obviously care about how their car looks... so obviously a Lexus LS460... is NOT on the table.
Uncle has owned a 09 Jag XFR since new, never ever had a single fault. Not one hiccup. Happy with that to be honest! Jag's have been getting much better in the reliability stakes.
I put over 40k miles on my last used Jaguar in about 2 and half years and never once had an issue other than a bad A/c valve that I had replaced in the first month to make sure I had cold a/c on the 5k mile road trip I was planning.. And it was a ten year old car when I bought it. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.
I own one, and it’s amazing to drive. As far as handling, it handles like a champion outperforming both the S550 or A8 (I know, b/c I’ve driven those), and as good as the Panamera.
@@kylesalings8355 No. I’ve owned two, and put a lot of miles on both. Both always worked great. The power is amazing. The only mechanical issue I had was with my first Jag when the moon roof broke and wouldn’t close all the way. I think it was because my kids were standing on the armrest and up through the open space and took it off the track. Anyhow, I traded it in for my second model, which I still have. I’ve put 80k miles on it (currently at 109k miles) and runs like new.
You know because it's common sense. If you used a computer in the 90's - 2000's you saw this typed in every chat room about 8,000 times a day. Oh the days if ICQ and mIRC.
Ethan Ward damn Doug! His journalistic integrity is in question. How dare he claim asl stands for age sex language. It means location. We all know this Doug is wrong wrong wrong. Nothing he ever says is now all in question.
The whole yogurt pretzel thing gives me flashbacks to Top Gear's Ferrari F430 vs F458 video. Jaguar owner: You ate a yogurt pretzel in my car. Doug: It's OK, it's depreciated to nothing, you can't drive it anymore.
Frank O'Connor I don't understand why you Americans make fun of British reliability. the shit you yanks turn out is so fucking terrible only Americans buy it. go to another country, I'll guarantee the closest thing you'll find to an American car is a European built ford.
Jags are quite reliable now, and Land Rovers are also much better than they were too. Ironically, considering the USA vs UK argument going on here, it was actually FORD who did quite a lot to save them both and improve the manufacturing processes of each, as well as having a gigantic R&D resource pool to use compared to before.
Jaguar have overcome their reliability issues and now score very high in customer surveys. In Europe Jaguar also achieve best in class for holding their value. I've owned 2 XF's the current one has 40k miles but the first one I sold at 130k miles. Both have been very reliable and had very few issues. Keep up Doug!
It was one hell of a car to be dropped off at school in! My dad has owned 4 jag's, an 09 XF supercharged, 2010 XFR, 2012 long wheelbase XJL supercharged and now he has a 2013 XJL ultimate edition. I'd love to see Doug review the ultimate edition! It puts this XJL to shame.
Assuming there is a warranty on most of the major components & you don't mind paying 2-3x for each service interval, go ahead. After all as Austin Powers once said, some people "like to live dangerously". I'm most amazed that the XJ is actually LIGHTER than anything in the class; S-class, 7 series, Panamera and Quattroporte. It weighs about the same as a Avalon or 3 series, which is amazing considering it has much more power & luxury features. That's what all aluminium construction does for you.
Kels Monti ひ I know their not supposed to have problems, I'm just saying that cos most people think that jaguars always break down even though most of them don't
@@MrMusic55123 well here we are in 2022 and I still have my 2011 XJL. No problems and I love it. I keep thinking of getting a new car but I can’t find anything I would love to drive as much as this one.
I won't consider a car unless I can find a Doug Score on it first. I laughed at the trunk openings - its the little touches that make these reviews the best. (Yes, the Doug DeMuro auto reviews are the best on the planet.)
Wilfred It's great. Some things that annoy me, as with all cars. Had a 997 before and I mainly miss the manual. It's certainly much faster than my 997, sounds significantly better, doesn't rattle like my 997 did and is just as much fun to drive, probably more fun TBH. Traction can be an issue in the rain, but when it's dry out it's not as bad as some reviewers might have you believe. You can easily floor the car in 2nd gear and just rocket away with little to no TC actuation. With a manual it would literally be my perfect car. As it stands, I'll probably get a second car for the summer next year to scratch my manual itch, something cheaper, like an Elise. Alternatively I may trade in the F-Type for a new GT3, if that should actually get a manual again, as is rumoured. Though TBH...as much as I love Porsche, my main reason for getting rid of my 997 was disappointment with customer service, which was incredibly poor over the 3 years I owned it and I frequently ran into trouble with my OPC (everything from cracked windshields to personal insults) - so, yeah, I'm not too psyched to be buying a car from these guys again. They don't seem to be taking younger buyers seriously at all (bought my 997 at 21). Meanwhile, Jag's service has been absolutely terrific up to this point. Time will tell.
This was one of the vids that helped me make my decision to by a mint 2011 XJ SC from my neighbor in 2018. It had 68K miles and she cared for it well; she was a regional manager that had to drive around to a lot of branches so she wanted to be comfy no matter what. She got a new job and didn't need to drive much so she put it up for sale and I bought it for $19K. Since then I've put 30K more miles on it and the only thing that I replaced was the water pump. It rides like a 510 hp limo when you want it to, and is as agile as a JagUar when you put it in Dynamic mode. The crazy thing is it is still worth $19K lol...
Gotta love the Jags! But I do prefer the look of the older ones (90's - 00's) over the modern post 2008 models. They're cool now, but they used to have this classic elegance that I just dont see anymore. But Im sure they perform better now than they ever have, so its a fair trade I guess
This XJ is wonderful and better than the german ones!! Certainly, now they're quite different from those of the past, but I would prefer them!! Matter of fact the XJ is my favorite car
Been watching your videos for a while and it's pretty awesome you have a great knowledge and I hope you never stop filming videos so we can keep benefit from it.
I own a 2012 Supercharged XJL. These are amazing cars, and the depreciation is unwarranted due to an uneducated consumer base. Old Jags had reliability issues, none of which are present in today's Jaguars. That being said, there are still issues with maintenance costs. For example: Brake pads/rotors at the dealership - $2800. If you buy one of these you better be able to work on cars or you will go completely broke trying to maintain the vehicle.
Funny. I have one JUST LIKE THIS in Stratus Grey. Supercharged beast....I love it. ZERO PROBLEMS since I bought it new. Runs like a top. Fast as hell and BEAUTIFUL
I think language was chosen for the smooth tone of "luxury", vowels and consonants. It's really supposed to be location but I don't think it would flow as smooth in the mind.
Used luxury cars can be incredibly good value for money, if you want a lot of cool stuff and big engines... Audi A8, E and S class Mercs, etc. even at 10 years old are so full of tech when fully loaded and you can find them with like 60-80k miles which means they will do at least twice as much without major part replacements... but the downside is that the standard maintenance costs can be higher than for a similarly priced Honda unless you have a small local garage that knows them
In my country (Scandinavia) Jags depreciate LESS than the similar S-klasse Merc and 7-series BMW. Mostly because there are much less of them available in the used market. In my opinion this is much nicer and more exclusive than the Germans.
Nassos Panago or Finland ;) but yeah just looked up at the most popular sites here and the "Cheapest" one was 2011 and with 3.0 diesel engine worth 56 900€ so almost 70 000$ for an older one with alot less power.
World Peace every scandanvian country is pretty nice, just a little dark and cold in the winter. I guess Sweeden is the coolest though, cause they have Abba, Volvo, and SAAB. Plus they created Spotify and Stockholm is beautiful.
Most cars depreciate in value substantially their first 3 years after manufacturing (and being sold). The two makes that tend to have the least depreciation the first 3 years of a cars' life is Acura and Lexus. They're both basically 50% depreciating value after 3 years. This is the first and best reason to never buy a car new, unless you plan on keeping it for 10+ years. I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time and I never buy new. Certified Pre-owned is really the way to go. It's really like you get an almost factory warranty as if you were purchasing new, but you don't have to pay for the depreciation. BMW's and Merc's are pretty similar to the Jag's.
I love this car! I also think it's more appropriate for it to have the V8! Makes it more majestic! Also, $35k isn't even enough for a BMW 330i, with the 4-cylinder turbo!
Can't believe I am only seeing this film now after so many years. I was astonished that Doug missed the basic fact that the reason the XJ performs so well is that the body is entirely aluminium compared to the German S Class and 7 Series competitors, cutting the weight down enormously.
now with the magic of depreciation, lets all cross our fingers and hope the same happens to a Bentley bentayga so that we can get one for cheap and still get super nice features
I have the 3.0 V6 XF and it is extremely reliable it's never let me down once the all be it 8yr old it still feels tight a like a new car. I had no issues with the electrical system or the suspension and with o my £350 for a service its not going to break the bank owning one. Fuel consumption is very light and I get 45 to the gallon the gear box is smooth and silky and has that beautiful Jaguar roar.
No doubt. I Had an entry level x-type. Best car i ever owned but had an oil pan gasket leak. Couldnt get anyone to do it bcs the whole engine needed to come out. Jaguar would do it at $200/hr. 30 hours of laber. Do the math on that one lol. Luckily i got in an accident and totaled it
Charles Wellington lll I got it used obviously. Paid $9K. 3 months later tranny went out. Had to pay $3k for a used one. It was a nice car lol but i learned my lesson and now drive a honda accord
I understand but i wasnt really looking for a jag. I just saw one and test drove it. Drove great for 120k mile car. If only the parts that broke were ford parts it would've been ok
JJ PP Still not a bad car. you can get an s65 amg with over 600 HP for the same dough, though. Or an S63 if you get lucky. (it's like .2 seconds faster but cheaper MSRP than s65 since s65 is a biturbo v12)
So far I have had absolutely no needed repairs other than the water pump that the North Houston Jaguar dealer discovered while I had it in for a simple go over inspection. A small amount of of seepage was found by the technician. The car was still under warranty at the time so no charge to me. I recently replaced the main AGM battery by the dealer and that has been it. At this time I have 33,000 miles and still very much enjoy every thing about the car. Especially in "Dynamic Mode". Truly a bad ass car!

What's faster though? The car or its depreciation?
i wonder if in another 4 years it will be 15k
These cars are about 19k
better off buying a more expensive car that will hold it's value. Buying this is spending 35k that you'll never see again, at least most of it.
Eyal R. most cars don't hold their value. buying a car and expecting it to keep its value is dumb imo

you had a 35k car in high school?
TIL a 16 year old can have 35k in untaxed income without raising suspicion.
Mi Zhou I could make a cool story here but I'll just tell the truth and say my dad bought the car for me. But $400 monthly payments honestly isn't that hard to make. I'm currently making them on a Range Rover Evoque Coupe.
Alim Isaev I believe is but my school wasn't in the best area. Best thing you'd see is a newer Honda or Altima
Giovanni Gomez Props to your old man. Hope you took good care of it.
they couldn't have washed the car before the review? seats, carpet and center console was dirty as shit..
It's a rental, dude...
bruh he rented it why tf would he wash it
I've been looking at this car as a luxury cruiser. After a few hours of looking around, the general sentiment is that this is one of the most reliable Jaguars around.
The trunk thing. Fucking hilarious.

Dear Doug,
Today I committed the ultimate sin and made the incredulous decision to search TH-cam for a car review of a "2017 Jaguar XJ review".
Thank you
why does this only have 6 likes😢

Uncle has owned a 09 Jag XFR since new, never ever had a single fault. Not one hiccup. Happy with that to be honest! Jag's have been getting much better in the reliability stakes.
Spac8 yes, one of the most reliable luxury cars.
Spac8 there's a lot of good ones sometimes
iwilleatyopussy They were. Not so much now.
Spac8 same here I have a 09 Xf supercharged and have done a ton of upgrades and have had no problems. And just this year I got a xjl supercharged
john m I agree, I was a bit hesitant when I was getting the Xf because of reliability and brand issues
wouldn't touch this without bumper to bumper warranty lol
I put over 40k miles on my last used Jaguar in about 2 and half years and never once had an issue other than a bad A/c valve that I had replaced in the first month to make sure I had cold a/c on the 5k mile road trip I was planning.. And it was a ten year old car when I bought it. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.
Sukun Paul it's a jag so it's reliable
Jags improved a lot since Britons are not allowed to touch them anymore
cassius969 Really? R&D and assembly are still in the UK; only the parent company has changed (Indian, not American now).
do some research , jaguar cars are still designed , engineered and built in the U.K you muppet
that car was filthy
looks like someone had sex in it everyday
Just greasy!
If you cleaned it would look amazing
I mean, it's from Atlanta, so no surprise here
Yeah if I were Doug, I would have demanded that thing be steam cleaned and then have the owner spray Lysol all over just to make sure. Lol

Jaguar owner: You ate a yogurt pretzel in my car.
Doug: It's OK, it's depreciated to nothing, you can't drive it anymore.
If you buy a Jaguar, you should really get a bumper-to-bumper warranty with it...you'll need it.
Frank O'Connor I don't understand why you Americans make fun of British reliability. the shit you yanks turn out is so fucking terrible only Americans buy it. go to another country, I'll guarantee the closest thing you'll find to an American car is a European built ford.
haha :D
Jags are quite reliable now, and Land Rovers are also much better than they were too. Ironically, considering the USA vs UK argument going on here, it was actually FORD who did quite a lot to save them both and improve the manufacturing processes of each, as well as having a gigantic R&D resource pool to use compared to before.
www.jdpower.com/cars/jaguar/xj/2012
You're rather generalising a lot of things/people, notformebeaky.

This car sounds like it has a lot to offer. I wonder how much this thing goes for.

Im just watching that F-type R depreciation... one day soon lovely... one day soon.
You can get them for around 60k I think. not bad at all
Initial depreciation has been pretty bad, but that's with all sports cars. Picked mine up for 75k. Still not as bad as the hit you take on an R8.
+ther1kid Same here, kid.

It's great.
I love Doug's sense of humor thats what makes his videos so worth watching lol
How much does it cost to buy a Manatee?
Bernard Bethel I was just thinking of the same thing.
Bernard Bethel If you call it a minutar it will cost you more.
Bernard Bethel Probably $40,000
Does anyone know where I can find Doug's in depth analysis and more details on this car? I'd love to read it.

In 2024. Models with under 50k miles are going for 15k. Definitely one of my favorites I’m considering at the moment.
My mom recently got a jag, they are great. We test drove a few different models at the dealer and they all handled great. And a great warranty.

Such a beautiful car, the interior is amazing and performance is insane for a car that big
This Jaguar aged beautifully.

Doug DeMuro You are dumb
America On Language?
Doug is the kind of guy who remembers to forget things in case he remembers.
Used luxury cars can be incredibly good value for money, if you want a lot of cool stuff and big engines... Audi A8, E and S class Mercs, etc. even at 10 years old are so full of tech when fully loaded and you can find them with like 60-80k miles which means they will do at least twice as much without major part replacements... but the downside is that the standard maintenance costs can be higher than for a similarly priced Honda unless you have a small local garage that knows them
Wish Doug was this excited in his new videos
In my country (Scandinavia) Jags depreciate LESS than the similar S-klasse Merc and 7-series BMW. Mostly because there are much less of them available in the used market. In my opinion this is much nicer and more exclusive than the Germans.
Who the fuck says Scandinavia..? i mean you're either Swedish , Danish or Norwegian no?
Nassos Panago or Finland ;) but yeah just looked up at the most popular sites here and the "Cheapest" one was 2011 and with 3.0 diesel engine worth 56 900€ so almost 70 000$ for an older one with alot less power.
detonator2112 same in UK and india too but that's expected
detonator2112 which country is Scandinavia? Haha or maybe you just wanted to sound like you are from somewhere nice
World Peace every scandanvian country is pretty nice, just a little dark and cold in the winter.
I guess Sweeden is the coolest though, cause they have Abba, Volvo, and SAAB. Plus they created Spotify and Stockholm is beautiful.
Moral of the story is don't be the dumb ass that buys a Jaguar new
Most cars depreciate in value substantially their first 3 years after manufacturing (and being sold).
Ryan Shannon my first car was a 2001 saab 9-3. brand new was $89k. paid $4500. nothing wrong, just saab depreciation after 7 years
No, the moral of the story is, if you can afford a new car, then go for it. Otherwise wait till it depreciates.
Volatus how was Saab 9-3 $89k in 2001, did it come with a Mercedes s class?
John Frantz
1 - aero edition
2 - something we like to call the "australia tax", where things are more expensive here for no apparent reason
I love this car! I also think it's more appropriate for it to have the V8! Makes it more majestic!
Also, $35k isn't even enough for a BMW 330i, with the 4-cylinder turbo!
My 2015 XF is in the shop for warranty service so I've been using an '18 XJ 3.0 AWD as a loaner for about a week now. It's fabulous.
Can't believe I am only seeing this film now after so many years. I was astonished that Doug missed the basic fact that the reason the XJ performs so well is that the body is entirely aluminium compared to the German S Class and 7 Series competitors, cutting the weight down enormously.
