  • Mark Schlereth joins Colin Cowherd on The Herd to talk about Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes after he wins his third Super Bowl with the Chiefs, and sets his sight on a fourth next season. Schlereth tells Colin what sets Mahomes apart from other quarterbacks, and makes comparisons to the great John Elway. He also answers whether he agrees with Colin that the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII was a blameless one, just a case of bad luck, as opposed to player or coach mistakes. They also talk an upcoming documentary covering the New England Patriots and what it may reveal about the end of the Bill Belichick - Tom Brady relationship. They end with whether the Denver Broncos should go for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

I saw that Travis Kelce reached a top speed of 19.86 mph when he ran past Fred Warner to set up the Chiefs game-tying field goal, tuat was his fastest speed in seven years. He almost had 100 yards in the second half alone. He is a cheat code. Enjoy him while you can & never take him for granted.

Y'know what so funny about Colin's question at the start, the moment I knew Mahomes was different was actually against the Niners. Nah. Allen is great too. Mahomes only had one touchdown drive all game and it was after greenlaw went out and a backup came in, which made it hard to guard kelce like before. I've got mahomes as number one, but it's not by a mile. Mahomes' defense is phenomenal. So is his oline. Maybe my raiders can steal chris jones or sneed this offseason. Mahomes isn't the reason the 49ers had two fumbles and a missed extra point. I do give him all the credit for overtime. The 49ers should have never let it come down to that because QBs like Mahomes, Brady, and Peyton make you pay

No one seems to grasp the "cheerleader" effect of Mahomes and Kelse on the sidelines. When they come off the field they are constantly running up and down the sidelines talking/yelling at their teammates. All this in a very positive way. The two of them keep their teammates in the game, and playing for a specific result. Yes, play calling is critical, but the team, in this game especially, has to be at the top the entire time. Very hard to do. But those two get their team going, obviously, better than others. Why is Kelse always getting open? He plays harder than the defense.

etc. very little of that is luck - it's how your team wasn't prepared.

I also think Schlereth maybe misses a point when he says that the Niners didn't stick to what they do well but tried to think one step ahead of Andy and Spags. That point is that last year, the Eagles stuck to their first-half plan, and it was the Chiefs that made the adjustments that won them the game in the second half. Maybe Shanahan thought there was a lesson to be learned from that game in terms of playing the chess game that is this era of football. Shanahan maybe didn't stick to his guns because Sirianni did, and it bit him in the a@@. This is just how Andy and Spags get in other people's heads at the moment.

Niners got a ridiculously "lucky" spot on that Chiefs field goal drive to tie the game and send it into overtime. We just don't call it "luck" because they didn't take advantage of it. And that's the thing - luck is what you make of it. Also, the Niners got very "lucky" when Thuney and Omenihu couldn't even take the field - again, we don't call it "luck" because Greenlaw getting injured during the actual game looks more "unlucky."

If you pay attention, you notice the same teams and players consistently "get lucky". What many people call luck, is simply the residual product of preparation, effort, and awareness.
Every game hinges upon dozens of little things, most of which go unnoticed by the general public. The great ones minimize and compensate for their own errors, and capitalize on those of the opposition.

I like the title, the part that sets him apart from other QBs is his team from upper management to the janitors. As a whole they just play better when it matters the most, imo there is only 2 teams that can compete with the Chief (I am taking about the entire team organization from from GM and down) that is the Bills And Bengals and both those teams need to play nearly perfect in all phases. Saying all of that i would still give the Chiefs the advantage over all 31 teams until the other 31 teams can prove they can have success over the Chiefs.

How you correctly point out Shanahan's terrible playcalling then sum it by saying he's blamelesss for his team losing. In 2019 SB when he played the chiefs. The niners were gashing the cheifs for 6 yards per carry, had the chiefs players visibly upset they couldnt stop the run. Then Kyle stops running the ball and has Jimmy playing outside of himself. He starts having Jimmy throw the ball, then when they lose everyone blames Jimmy. When in fact Kyle put them in a bad psoition. Up till the second half Mahomes played like trash. How does Kyle escape accountability, it has to be the last name.

Sorry Colin, a lot of blame to dish out. 49ers multiple times had the looks they wanted, the receivers running free and it was missed blocking/protection assignments that allowed Jones, McDuffie etc to pressure Purdy untouched and disrupt what would've been probably easy touchdowns or 1st downs (and Purdy did have time and just overthrew Deebo in the endzone). The Chiefs led for like 5 minutes the entire game and won. There's blame to dish.
