- Mark Schlereth joins Colin Cowherd on The Herd to talk about Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes after he wins his third Super Bowl with the Chiefs, and sets his sight on a fourth next season. Schlereth tells Colin what sets Mahomes apart from other quarterbacks, and makes comparisons to the great John Elway. He also answers whether he agrees with Colin that the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII was a blameless one, just a case of bad luck, as opposed to player or coach mistakes. They also talk an upcoming documentary covering the New England Patriots and what it may reveal about the end of the Bill Belichick - Tom Brady relationship. They end with whether the Denver Broncos should go for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

It's a challenge to find your official channel postings on TH-cam there are hundreds of people pirating your content and monetizing it some have more views than the real channel are you going to do anything about this? It's hurting your brand and pocketbook.
I saw that Travis Kelce reached a top speed of 19.86 mph when he ran past Fred Warner to set up the Chiefs game-tying field goal, tuat was his fastest speed in seven years. He almost had 100 yards in the second half alone. He is a cheat code. Enjoy him while you can & never take him for granted.
I love his game especially as a chiefs fan but he’s old. He doesn’t have much time left. We’ve got to cherish it 😢
Travis kelce is great. In the discussion for best tight end ever. But his ability to get open also changed once greenlaw tore his achilles. Look at the stats before he went out versus after he went out
@@alexanderritter1522they didn’t target him champ
Taylor Swift is gonna make him retire after next season
All the media meatheads this year were saying Kelce lost a step. Kelce put that to rest.
Y'know what so funny about Colin's question at the start, the moment I knew Mahomes was different was actually against the Niners. That play in 2018 when he scrambled back like 15 yards to avoid pressure and stepped up and launched a bullet to the back of the endzone was when I knew. That play was phenomenal.
I was watching that game. And maybe I’m bias as a chiefs fan, but I said right after that play that Mahomes is gonna go down as the greatest ever. I was half kidding but damn lol.
I knew he was special watching him at Tech. I didn't know if it would get better once he was refined, but damn it did.
Same here I remember that play like yesterday. It confirmed what I already knew, I saw glimpses that he was really good in his first start vs. the broncos and also in a preseason game vs the falcons
My brain almost shut down after that play. Epic. Eluding defenders and just threw a dime/rocket with ease. That was crazy
Mark Schlereth is my all time favorite player-turned commentator. His knowledge of the game is world class, he's never afraid to say what he thinks, and he always delivers great content. More Schlereth, Fox, please.
100% with you on this!
Used to love him and Shannon’s back and forth on Undisputed
Who cares
He is really good. He is usually spot on.
Shannon Sharpe said it best "The gap between QB1 & 2 is larger than between 2-5. I wholeheartedly agree 💯
Nah. Allen is great too. Mahomes only had one touchdown drive all game and it was after greenlaw went out and a backup came in, which made it hard to guard kelce like before. I've got mahomes as number one, but it's not by a mile. Mahomes' defense is phenomenal. So is his oline. Maybe my raiders can steal chris jones or sneed this offseason. Mahomes isn't the reason the 49ers had two fumbles and a missed extra point. I do give him all the credit for overtime. The 49ers should have never let it come down to that because QBs like Mahomes, Brady, and Peyton make you pay
@@alexanderritter1522bro if you knew how insane you sound. Josh Allen isn’t in Mahomes atmosphere.
@@alexanderritter1522 Allen is NOT great. He's made the AFC Championship Game once & lost in the Divisional round three years in a row. No MVP's, no All-Pro's.....not impressed‼️
Do you watch football? Allen lost to Burrow last year and he was at home for that playoff game. I understand you are a big Allen fan but they are not in the same conversation. Also, last time I checked Buffalo has a great defense as well, that’s why over the past 3-4 years they’ve been the favorite to win a Super Bowl.
Josh Allen the next Jim Kelly
Mark Schlereth is just fun to listen to.
😂 you must be a boomer
I would hire him as a GM in a HEARTBEAT!
Luck has the smell of perspiration is a good quote
Unless your last name is Luck

Regular season Chiefs and Playoff Chiefs are 2 different entities.
No one seems to grasp the "cheerleader" effect of Mahomes and Kelse on the sidelines. When they come off the field they are constantly running up and down the sidelines talking/yelling at their teammates. All this in a very positive way. The two of them keep their teammates in the game, and playing for a specific result. Yes, play calling is critical, but the team, in this game especially, has to be at the top the entire time. Very hard to do. But those two get their team going, obviously, better than others. Why is Kelse always getting open? He plays harder than the defense.
The differences is his decision making, his ability to read defenses and he's so poised in big moments. Then there's Kelce and Reid 😄
He's got a baseball arm... he's like a shortstop who can make a split second decision to throw to any base, or set up a double play... his legs are fast enough to steal home, with bases loaded and read defences as good as Brady... this dude is GOAT.
Kelce can read defenses by now too I’d imagine. He was a qb
Mahomes is creative, explosive w/ minimal mistakes. The offense he generates is significant considering he relatively rarely turns it over
The Chiefs are younger yet they knew the rules.
The Wrong team is full of Vets. What the excuse?
I find it difficult to believe that the 49ers did NOTHING to inform players about the rules. The Chiefs clearly spent more time emphasizing it, but at some point the players are accountable for knowing this stuff too.
the excuse is that it's rigged
they knew the rules
they're saying they didn't so all these channels paid by the nfl can get more views.
A month later and y’all still acting like shanahan didn’t know the rules, he said it MULTIPLE times he wanted the ball 3rd in OT
He's like Brett without the wildside
Mark is very smart and eloquent with his words
Agree using math to win a game is stupid. Its a game of momentum, muscle memory and emotions plus skill and being clutch. With a dash of good and bad fortune.
Mahomes is Jedi Master.
7:15 I'm a numbers guy as it's part of what I do for a living and I agree with Mark on this one. I can't stand the overuse of analytics in sports today. Sometimes you have to line up and punch the other guy in the mouth. Football comes down to blocking and tackling
I think Mark in his Patrick take is mostly right, but I think what makes Mahomes the best in the current game is his ability to go from playing bad or just ok for 58 minutes and then flip the goat switch and play with clutchness and win you games.
Mark nailed it. Always defer and kick off to get the extra down in sudden death. You can point at various things that lost them this game, sure, but taking the ball first in sudden death against Mahomes is wild. Especially knowing Mahomes' only TD in regulation was right after the muffed punt off the foot giving him a short field.
KC got 3 drives that got all the way to the 10 yards line but only got 6pts from it because of the fumble and run out of time. 49ers wasnt shutting them down like people thought.
It's not sudden death anymore. In the real, old school rules sudden death, you always want the ball first.
In true sudden death, any kind of first score, wins the game.
@@royalway12 It is sudden death after each team has had a full possession.
Colin Cowherd is the guy who consistently said Mike Tomlin’s Steelers teams were never “buttoned up” in the big moments vs the Patriots & that was on him. But Kyle Shanahan gets a pass.
Wow, thanks for this. This is why Colin bugs me so much. I do see flaws in his continuous critique of folks he like vs don't care for.
which is funny becuase now we know they may have been too buttoned up. Tomlin has such complete control of his locker room is fking insane.
Yeah I'm not sure why Colin is defending Kyle so much -
His whole attitude with this super bowl is a bit of a joke - "I think it's blameless.... luck plays a big part"
LOL No - your special teams not handling a important punt return mishap, somehow not being taught or not responding well to that, your team (actually you the coach) getting a way from the run after Mahomes int.
etc. very little of that is luck - it's how your team wasn't prepared.
Kyle has a lot of blame - and blaming the DC is hilarious - looks like a lack of responsibility.
The little boy Kyle who helped his dad in Denver - not sure he has quite grown up completely..... looks like some nepotism in him even getting a HC job.
If Shanahan had mahomes he'd look like a genius
@@stevenbrown6720
Kyle had his chance to get Tom Brady... didn't want him 🤷
So Kyle's own decisions are why people don't think he's a genius...not bc he doesn't have mahomes.
Love you Schler…Broncos4Life.
This was a great interview.
As soon as he said what he said I recalled the playoff game I lost because of it
I was running the ball 🏈 they couldn't stop me and I'm like they going to adjust .
They where running a defensive system where they could not adjust
I didn't know this I beat myself
Great interview
I was overthinking the situation
Stick to what is working until they show they can stop it
I lost one just like this
Travis (he REALLYwas "clocked" at 22mph!
Mahomes is great yes but KC also has Reid, spags , jones, kelce and veach who are best in their business too.
It's a team effort for sure but Patrick is the kingpin
No luck? Lol. Pat threw a pick which is rare and they fumbled twice i think. One in the red zone where they were about to score or worst case get 3. They didnt make the most of the luck when Chiefs did. Beat fair and square.
Love Schlereth. Straight shooter. Great content!
Love this guy!
Covering for Kelce is not necessary, his coach already took care of it. He was out of line but the leader of the team covered for him. Andy is great.
A Kicker that makes Field goals
The harder I worked the luckier I got.
Henry Ford
The mistake Shanahan made was assuming he'd get the ball back in OT while skipping steps 1 and 2. He underestimated the Chiefs D and assumed he'd score a TD. 😅 You can't get to 3 without doing 1 and 2 first. Haha
I also think Schlereth maybe misses a point when he says that the Niners didn't stick to what they do well but tried to think one step ahead of Andy and Spags. That point is that last year, the Eagles stuck to their first-half plan, and it was the Chiefs that made the adjustments that won them the game in the second half. Maybe Shanahan thought there was a lesson to be learned from that game in terms of playing the chess game that is this era of football. Shanahan maybe didn't stick to his guns because Sirianni did, and it bit him in the a@@. This is just how Andy and Spags get in other people's heads at the moment.
Niners got a ridiculously "lucky" spot on that Chiefs field goal drive to tie the game and send it into overtime. We just don't call it "luck" because they didn't take advantage of it. And that's the thing - luck is what you make of it. Also, the Niners got very "lucky" when Thuney and Omenihu couldn't even take the field - again, we don't call it "luck" because Greenlaw getting injured during the actual game looks more "unlucky."
Analytics is great for creating a gameplan. It sucks during the game,
For the record. The guy directing the band probably can play the clarinet and probably 5 other instruments. They have to be music majors to be a band director and those classes requires you to learn more instruments. Mind you, Every director started in the band in their local elementary or middle school.
it's his ability to identify when his defense needs him. he can rise up. and he changes gears. and he has a lot of gears i've noticed. he can run but doesn't do it unless he must. he can go deep but he doesn't force it. he's got game. and he's a "pure" leader. he's superior to the kid from buffalo, im sorry i forgot his name. and the one in Baltimore(i don't feel like looking it up) because he''ll do what he must to win. and you can see that he wants it.
there is a lot of brady in him. he knows when to drop the act and accelerate and he has the tools and experience to determine his destiny
Mark is great 😂😂😂😂
Yeah everyone seems to think Shanahan is one of the best coaches but the evidence is to the contrary. Maybe a great regular season coach. The GM is better at his job than shanahan is at his. Also firing Steve wilks is crazy & a scapegoat. Shanahan should be an OC. How many chances is this guy gonna get
Why doesn’t Shelerth has his OWN show on fox yet? He’s literally been giving football knowledge now for over 20 friggin years..
People don't like know it all. They want loud analysts. Look at Max Kellerman out of the job.
What set him apart the most is he’s the only qb who never plays against the chiefs
Regardless of the new OT rules or old OT rules. 49ers still kicked a field goal. KC would’ve gotten a chance either way
I don't understand why Mark Schlereth is not a primetime tv analyst. His knowledge and analysis is always accurate. Still amazed about his 29 surgeries though.
Niners played extremely well, but “blameless?” When they’ve claimed they didn’t understand the rules of overtime? Not sure I agree with that perspective necessarily.
Special teams gave KC the ball at the SF 17. One player couldn't get out of the way. Returner tried to pick the ball up instead of falling on it. That shows nervousness and no situational awareness.
People wanted Travis benched in the SB for the “assault” on Reid but then Mark tells a story about jabbing a coach in the chest with his helmet…
I generally enjoy and frequently agree with Collin's input. However, crediting luck for wins and losses is pretty weak.
If you pay attention, you notice the same teams and players consistently "get lucky". What many people call luck, is simply the residual product of preparation, effort, and awareness.
Every game hinges upon dozens of little things, most of which go unnoticed by the general public. The great ones minimize and compensate for their own errors, and capitalize on those of the opposition.
I like the title, the part that sets him apart from other QBs is his team from upper management to the janitors. As a whole they just play better when it matters the most, imo there is only 2 teams that can compete with the Chief (I am taking about the entire team organization from from GM and down) that is the Bills And Bengals and both those teams need to play nearly perfect in all phases. Saying all of that i would still give the Chiefs the advantage over all 31 teams until the other 31 teams can prove they can have success over the Chiefs.
The part that sets him apart from other QBs: An O-line that holds on every play in every Super Bowl, but is never penalized for it.
@@MissedByAMile I not gonna say anything about missed penalties because even with them happening all there teams this year, Bills, Ravens and Niners had opportunities to put the Chiefs away at the end, A missed TD pass to Shakir and a missed FG by the Bills, then a fumble by Zay Flowers that should of been a TD, and with the niners just a bunch of missied opportunities to put the game away before the 4th quarter.
@@MissedByAMile😂😂 salty Whiners fan spotted. How many holds got called against the 49ers?? They don’t call holding in the Super Bowl, both teams held, Chiefs earned a W
No Holding calls

Punt returner should have recovered the punt that hit the shoe. That's not bad luck. That bad football skills.

There's no such thing as luck it's called talent!!
Michael needs to be a head coach, if he is a coach on Detroit, the Lions win the game, play the game that is in front of you!
Mark may hate all those math nerds when it comes to analytics, but I bet he loved those nerds when it came to figuring out his stats for negotiating his contract
Do you think counting stats is hard math? You need to read a book

Not sure what to say anymore 😢there were time history shows you can’t turn the switch on after being average all year 😂but gues you can 🎉
What's really scary is 15 hasn't even hit his prime yet .
Giving the 49ers players a pass on not knowing overtime rules is idiotic. It's not like these guys have to be geniuses.
I love mark! Respect his idea of football so much. But math matters big guy. Not saying I agree with Kyle decision
What is that symbol on Mark's hat? I have also seen John Middlekauff wear a hat with the same symbol.

I wonder if Spencer Rattler is going to start getting mentioned after spring training? The dude has seriously come a long way as a football player and as a human.
Steve Young says the future Super Bowl Champs will be shuffled around among 4 or 5 QBs over the next decade and Burrow is 5 - 1 against Mahomes and Allen (one penalty away of being 6 -0) so stay tuned...
Burrow gets hurt alot
Mahomes will definitely win at least a couple more in the next decade. Burrow and Allen, maybe 2 combined. Maybe.
Joe is 3-1 Not 5-1.
@@SamNB3 against "Mahomes AND Allen"
Fun Fact...12 QBs Who Have Appeared in Multiple SBs Mahomes Ranks "DEAD LAST" in 12th in SB Stats...Stat of The Day...With The Bucs Tom Brady Was "64-0!!" in The Redzone (64TDs & 0 INTs)...That Stat is Absolutely BANANAS!!!!
It took this long for people to realize mahones is different from every qb in the NFL. Like randy moss says come on man. Chiefs kingdom baby
I like Mark Schlereth's analysis of running the same play repeatedly as part of your team's identity. You stick with what works, i.e. "dance with what brung you." Lombardi's Packers ran the sweep so well that it was the same way. You knew it was coming. They even told you it was coming. And you couldn't stop it.
Lot of respect for Mark Shereleft man knows the game and also knows you have to have the take it mindset have appreciated this man's knowledge on football for many years
Mahomes has NOW become so DANGEROUS.. He REMEMBERS , and then USES THAT AGAINST you, ESPECIALLY At the END of Games 🎉😮😂🤪🙄😜🤫🤫🤫🎉
Completely agree with Mark’s analytics take. I absolutely hate analytics because they can’t take into account momentum, player personnel, and player’s tiredness just to name a few
Look at the AFC championship. Reid put the game in the defenses hands. No cute second half plays down field. He called plays that best fit the momentum and conditions of the game. How many coaches would have gone pass happy with a QB like Mahomes?
It’s just weird cuz as a fan I knew and you would think a player would know the rules
I'm one of those who only watch around playoffs so haven't seen Mahomes enough to know his game well. Is there a way for we as viewers to know when he has fooled someone with his eyes, looked one way but passed another?
When mark talks about identity he sounds like like Dan Campbell.
If you're job title is "Professional Football Player" you should probably know the rules for the most important football game. SMH the general standards have fallen so far away from fundamentals it makes me sick.
How you correctly point out Shanahan's terrible playcalling then sum it by saying he's blamelesss for his team losing. In 2019 SB when he played the chiefs. The niners were gashing the cheifs for 6 yards per carry, had the chiefs players visibly upset they couldnt stop the run. Then Kyle stops running the ball and has Jimmy playing outside of himself. He starts having Jimmy throw the ball, then when they lose everyone blames Jimmy. When in fact Kyle put them in a bad psoition. Up till the second half Mahomes played like trash. How does Kyle escape accountability, it has to be the last name.
In your first sentence, are you making a statement or asking a question? There may be a word missing: “do.”
You may want to insert it after the word “how” and place a question mark at the end of the sentence.

Sorry Colin, a lot of blame to dish out. 49ers multiple times had the looks they wanted, the receivers running free and it was missed blocking/protection assignments that allowed Jones, McDuffie etc to pressure Purdy untouched and disrupt what would've been probably easy touchdowns or 1st downs (and Purdy did have time and just overthrew Deebo in the endzone). The Chiefs led for like 5 minutes the entire game and won. There's blame to dish.
Mark should be calling games

That Greenlaw injury was the biggest fluke. It totally compromised the SF defense
and KC didint having their starting guards. continue with the excuses
Not really a fluke when you're too excited and fall over yourself from jumping up and down. Literally not a fluke and just a matter of fact of a guy not being able to contain himself and acting like a child and hurting himself.

There are 4 downs no matter what the choice to punt or not is a choice.
Why does Mark assume the decision to receive was analytics based? Kyle is famously very poor with analytics
Because Kyle said in a press conference that they had done analytics that told them to.
What sets him apart is he plays in the weakest time in football since the 60s. To put him in the conversation with elway is stupid. He is a talented QB but he would have been destroyed back then.
