I loved Chelsea proudly declaring that the vegitarian chicken nuggets are indistinguishable from actual chicken only for Charlie and Matt to go "You absolutely can."
It's a vegetarian thing. My mom stopped eating meat 5 years ago (give or take), and since she has no comparison, she calls fake meat products (obv. the quality ones) indistinguishable, but the rest of our family can definitely tell the difference. It's usually the texture that's the main tell. Honestly, I much prefer vegetarian food that doesn't try to mimic meat too closely, since then it ends up being a worse version of whatever it's supposed to be. For example, in my country we often eat something similar to burger patties (but taller and smaller in radius, also usually made with pork). Since I have reference to actual meat, a fake meat version just ends up tasting like you bought cheap ground meat (the kind that isn't even 100% meat) and were a bad cook, on the other hand my mom makes a similar thing but with diced egg and no meat instead, and it's distinct enough that it just tastes like good food because your brain doesn't subconsciously compare it to the meat version.
I got a buddy that swears that the Morningstar Chicken Nuggets taste exactly like real chicken nuggets. I tried one, and it did not. It was like someone tried to copy the lowest quality chicken nugget, like some of the off brands from a dollar store.
@@MaskedDeath_ Makes sense, guess it's easy to convince yourself something is indistinguishable when it's been years. I haven't really tried many of the vegetarian meat substitutes but I suppose it makes sense that you can't really perfect the meat taste without meat.

@@rosie20098 I feel you with the tofu issue. Not vegan or vegetarian but I do try to limit cooking with meat due to how expensive it is where I live. Tried all sorts of recipes only to find that I only really like it sliced thin and breaded due to the mushy texture. No matter how long i press it for it never seems to be enough.
I've been vegetarian for almost four years now and I agree with this tier list. However, a thing that isn't really mentioned during this is price. A lot of these items are more expensive than their meat alternatives which I think really drives people away. Hopefully in the future they can become the same if not lower in price.
As a vegan, yeah I agree the prices suck, but they've gotten much better, and the quality of items, fake cheese and dairy included, in the 7+ years I've been meat free has grown exponentially. It's just the nature of capitalism though unfortunately, the price won't go down until supply is higher, which is luckily a thing that is happening as the demand is getting higher from not just more people becoming vegetarian/vegan, but the fact a lot of meat eaters are starting to enjoy the products now that they're finally getting so good. A lot of my friends still eat meat but probably only a 2 or 3 days a week now, and the majority don't drink cow's milk anymore.
Have you tried grilled watermelon? It was a thing long before fake meat and, while not having a huge nutritional value, is massively better for you than that processed garbage.
As someone who has to eat all of these because genetics screwed me out of digesting actual meats, I'm happy to see these get some attention and ranked! Pro tip for Impossible Burgers: Set oven to 400* F (204* C), salt and pepper on the burger, little water in the pan, then put it in for 22 minutes, flip at 11 minutes left. should reach a nice 165*F (73*C) which is perfect.
seeing charlie’s smile sparked a gleam in my eye and a slight palpitation of the heart. my grandmother was watching as well and now she can walk again. my goodness, may charlie inspire millions once more
I don't know what brand they use, but Asian vegan restaurants always have the best fake meat. The texture and flavor are usually pretty close or even spot on.
Seitan is used in a lot of the fake meats in asian restaurants, particularly mock duck. It's literally 100% pure gluten flour but as it's kneaded and stretched it creates the fibrous texture you get from chicken, duck and slow cooked beef/pork. The shit is like magic the first time you try real good stuff, seitan revolutionised the fake poultry meat world. There's a junk food chicken place in london called temple of seitan which popularised it and now it's everywhere.
Beef burgers rock, I proved they are good for loosing weight and building muscle💯 that synthetic vegan crud is damn pathetic and what billy gates the villain wants us to do, he sold horribly rushed vaccines and now want people to stop consuming gold meat
Burger King must be bad in the US or something. In the UK, the burgers from Burger King are great. Sure, the chips (over here at least) are boring and crap, but the burgers are really good.
10:29 anyone else think Charlie just looked incredibly gorgeous and cute right here lol like dude. Hair is fantastic, cute funny pout, wtf how is he so gorgeous
I like a lot of the imitation chicken foods, and the sausage links are good too. Most hot dog imitations are ok. There was one product from a brand called Veet that I really liked but I can't find it anywhere. It was a wheat gluten product that was "chicken" flavored. The texture was a little bit like chicken, but was still good. It was very firm and a little chewy. The funny part about it was that it was pressed into the shape of half of a cartoon looking roasted chicken. I try looking for it every once in a while but I think they probably stopped making it.
I had the same thing happen when I was on magic mushrooms at a music festival, I saw everyone eating those massive turkey legs and they started moving and convulsing and it freaked me out so much I couldn't eat it anymore lol
Beyond Burgers really do get it right. Been vegetarian for about a year now, and I made plenty of burgers before that switch. The Beyond brand ones just get so close to the real thing, the only way my family can tell the difference is when they look at the side profile - it's a bit too "square" or perfect looking where regular meat is a lot more rough around the sides. They also had a better solution to making it juicy than Impossible. Instead of trying to replicate the blood of a burger, they just add little bits of extra fat throughout it to make it juicy on the bite
@@defendtheconstitution1776 hot dogs probably come close. Processed veggies are different from processed meat though, processed veggies don't typically have the same negative effects which processed meat have
@striderwhiston9897 false. That extra "fat" they add is a heaping helping of RBD oils ( RBD: Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized) which those in the industry that use that acronym know how terrible they are for you. Prior the invention of these refined oils heart disease was a rare condition and now it's the number one killer of Americans. I would not encourage anyone to eat processed meats, and even moreso for hyperprocessed imitation meats. Regardless of your diet, it's simple, eat whole real local food that is grown/raised organically.
Chelsey's laugh is great! lol Make a Commander episode! As a pescatarian I have to say I really don't like any of the many Morning Star products I have tried :') I might try those corndogs though. Impossible and Beyond are great but I have to make them myself, definitely can't ever get them from a fast-food joint... was actually shocked that you liked the fast-food ones.
This gave me a good giggle. I just turned 50 and I stopped eating meat nearly 24 years ago for both health and ethical reasons. Never been one to push my dietary choices on others. Let me just say that when I first stopped the options were...well, there weren't any. And living in a state where BBQ is all of the four food groups, I had to get really creative, and even then, it was a struggle. Only in recent years has it finally become more mainstream and I'm not constantly being barraged with the same dumb "Mmmm, bacon!" jokes just because I dare to mention I'm vegan when trying to order food. I wish vegan options were more affordable for everyone, though. Even though I can afford to eat meatless and maintain a healthy diet, I feel it's still a privilege because of how overpriced it all is. Everyone should be able to eat they way they want and need. But, yes, vegan seafood still has a long way to go ha!
while there is some truth that it is a priviledge--i dont think it necessarily HAS to be expensive. the processed vegan items, like the ones in this video, are expensive, but plenty of relatively cheap food is vegan. rice, beans, pasta, plain tofu, canned vegetables, etc. you can spice it up with some seasonings or sauces and make vegan / vegetarian meals fairly cheap
@@luigi7834 Oh, for sure. The majority of the food I ate the first couple of decades I became vegan were meals made from the ingredients you listed, and are still main staples of my diet. What I'm mainly referring to is the "meat" options. A lot of people have a hard time cutting meat from their diets cold turkey (no pun intended), and in order to transition into a meatless diet, the best options are very costly. I try to avoid processed foods for the most part, but I do enjoy a good fake meat meal once in a while, as I still enjoy the taste without the guilt. It boggles my mind that all effort and time and money that goes into raising, feeding, watering, injecting hormones, housing, slaughtering, and butchering any animal for their meat, dairy, or eggs costs less than something made out of a few ingredients to make a fake meat patty or a chicken strip. That's my beef with the whole "financial privilege" aspect of it (pun intended).
I've been veggie for about 30 years and the vegan stuff definitely took longer to get off the ground. Even quorn had egg in it, until they brought out their vegan range, the fake chicken taste's like crap compared to the non vegan ones unfortunately.
I have a hack if anyone bakes. 1/4 cup of club soda/sparkling water is equivalent to one egg and it works for a lot of recipes like muffins, cookies, bread, etc without losing the texture benefits of real eggs. Might not work for lemon meringue pie or eggs benedict though haha.
See you guys went with the sausage PATTIES. If you got the links, you'd rank them higher. As someone who had to switch to Morning Star for breakfast sausage due to the grease destroying my stomach, I recommend it. Also I'll definitely try the bacon since it was ranked so high, and normal bacon grease also destroys my stomach.. Also I absolutely love Chelsea's vibes she needs to guest more for these tier lists
Love that they gave Chelsey some serious camera time! I had a plant-based diet for over four years, and she was spot on with her input. Meat-free alternatives are an acquired taste. It's also worth noting that going into the experience with meat as the standard is an inaccurate way to go about it. We don't eat chicken expecting it to taste like turkey... it's the same idea. I'm also happy that companies are switching it up from soy products for universally understood reasons. I have no idea how people committed to the lifestyle before these alternatives ever existed. They have my respect.
I would argue that is a fault of the marketing, a lot of these products advertise themselves as not just meat substitutes, but outright replacements, and being able to create the entire experience of eating real meat.
@@ezlomacks6533 That's a good point, though. I do find it odd that they want to make it look like it's bleeding when a good chunk of their consumers are there to avoid things like that in the first place.
I went veggie in '93, basically your choice when out in most pubs and restaurants was one of 4 options, and most only had one of these ( if they had any at all): baked potato, cannolini, lasange, penne pasta with basil and cheese. Or you were constantly offered fish, which I never understood until I realised there were loads of pescatarians going about calling themselves veggie.. still a pet pev even now
@@EnigmaticIguana It's not about it looking like it's bleeding, it's to further emulate the flavor of meat. Last I knew of it they were using heme from beets, which has a decent amount of iron and imparts a similar flavor to hemoglobin inherent to beef.
shout out to the editor for giving us multiple tier lists!! i have silently wanted this for years!! sucks you've probably been fired because of it and we'll never see this again.
In Germany, BK uses Vegetarian Butcher's patties for their vegetarian options. And, at least imo, all of their products I've tried have been impeccable. Also, compared to the absolutely massive number of meat and fish dishes, there's already a bunch of quite specific vegetarian options.
I appreciate this. I'm unfortunately one of those people who contracted an alpha-gal allergy from a tick, and mammal meat/products are completely off limits. You can only do chicken/turkey so much, so I mostly eat vegan options and fish. Most are much better than anyone gives them credit for.
Dont rely on morningstar! There are so many better options, they didnt give alt. meats the chance imo, I stopped eating morning star bc its just not as good as other brands
Well, atleast nice to know it doesn't entirely lock you out of meat, as someone that prefers turkey and chicken more. Though if it's also mammal products in general.. well that's gonna be a doozy with all the stuff that's got milk in it..
@@HyenaBlank not everything triggers it for everyone. I can do some dairy containing products with if they're either very low fat or processed with the assistance of a ton of lactaid, but anything high fat like cream or even just actual milk reduces me to vomiting within a few seconds. I’m a real person, I eat real meat, unfortunately fast food is fake meat also
I've been vegetarian for almost four years now and I agree with this tier list. However, a thing that isn't really mentioned during this is price. A lot of these items are more expensive than their meat alternatives which I think really drives people away. Hopefully in the future they can become the same if not lower in price.
The vegetarian tax is the worst
Veggie for 5 years and I mostly agree, I like the black bean burger alright though.
Agreed, to be fair tho these foods are extremely processed. Nothing wrong with eating it but maybe not the best for you on a daily basis

I don't know what brand they use, but Asian vegan restaurants always have the best fake meat. The texture and flavor are usually pretty close or even spot on.
That's just cat bro
it’s often homemade
Seitan is used in a lot of the fake meats in asian restaurants, particularly mock duck. It's literally 100% pure gluten flour but as it's kneaded and stretched it creates the fibrous texture you get from chicken, duck and slow cooked beef/pork. The shit is like magic the first time you try real good stuff, seitan revolutionised the fake poultry meat world.
There's a junk food chicken place in london called temple of seitan which popularised it and now it's everywhere.
TVP - Textured Vegetable Protein is what the local vegan Chinese place uses. It's so good.
vietnamese spots always do damn good, and it's because they're already great at working with tofu/soy.

Keep it goin brother!
Fake meat is the most processed food in any supermarket. Kudos to their marketing department convincing others it’s safe to eat.
@@defendtheconstitution1776 hot dogs probably come close.

@@defendtheconstitution1776it’s easier to make food in a factory than it is to grow and raise it
@striderwhiston9897 false.
Agreed. Vegan meat has improved immensely, but I wish it wasn't A. full of sodium and B. super expensive.
See you guys went with the sausage PATTIES. If you got the links, you'd rank them higher. As someone who had to switch to Morning Star for breakfast sausage due to the grease destroying my stomach, I recommend it.

The Liquid Ladder videos are some of my favorite videos on TH-cam. Please never stop doing them
Love that they gave Chelsey some serious camera time!
