May I also say add that in respect to the local customs, guests aren't suppose to catch someone off-guard in their homes. It would be very embarrassing for the supposed host, and being caught cooking in the kitchen isn't any less embarrassing. They would usually have myriads of preparations before even dare to set the time and date to invite the guests. One of the worst thing that the people of Toba dislike is having an unscheduled guest coming over.That being said, there's no crime done here, other than making the lady of the house a bit uncomfortable at first. Also she said "I wouldn't have any money to pay back a visit to your home" (-19.15. "Ngga ada uang kesana, hahaha" ) Paying back a visit sits on top list in the Batak customs. I can tell she genuinely regrets telling Dale that she may never pay back a visit to Scotland due to her sorta permanent financial state. Again no harm done, except maybe giving them money after that, but I've covered that on my first comment, which is practically also no worries. It's considered very rude to ask people for money let alone to foreigners, but it's also open to interpretation to whether it's rude to not accept what's bestowed by an older figure, since it's a common culture to respect elders. We could see that she felt hesitant at first, especially since she didn't ask for any money, yet went along with it. Kids in Toba are most polite, and typically shy and reserved, yet very warm and approachable. They would go out of their way to avoid offending people whom they just met. I've clearly underestimated how familiar these people are with English, since they speak the local Batak language and hardly even speak Bahasa Indonesia. The orange lady was gold. This is the third video of Toba I've thoroughly enjoyed from your channel. Props to your strong tummy for being able to safely digest those cendol and local delicacies without any problem. My brother in law lives on samosir island right near lake toba and it is such a beautiful part of the world and although 95% people are friendly you still need to be aware of your surroundings don't forget you are the bule/foreigners so hati hati 👍😊

I think you should use some simple vocabulary with the local people and repeat it 2 or 3 times. They will understand you. Avoid using long sentences or speaking too fast. Even in the Indonesia language, we understand better with simple sentences. Believe me, the locals are genuine and sincere people. They love talking to foreigners. Even for me, as a city boy, I love talking to the local people. They are friendly and nice. I can see that the locals are trying to bond with you. Some of them are just shy. Some are so open. No prejudice. They are welcoming you to their house and even let you see their toilet. That's how nice they are.

Cendol is originally Sundanese traditional drink. They made some those of jelly thing by pouring sagoo batter through a sieve. I love their coconut milk with palm sugar mix syrup with ice. So sweet and refreshing and when its best quality, you can taste the richness and saltiness from the coconut milk :9

May I also say add that in respect to the local customs, guests aren't suppose to catch someone off-guard in their homes. It would be very embarrassing for the supposed host, and being caught cooking in the kitchen isn't any less embarrassing. They would usually have myriads of preparations before even dare to set the time and date to invite the guests. One of the worst thing that the people of Toba dislike is having an unscheduled guest coming over.That being said, there's no crime done here, other than making the lady of the house a bit uncomfortable at first. Also she said "I wouldn't have any money to pay back a visit to your home" (-19.15. "Ngga ada uang kesana, hahaha" ) Paying back a visit sits on top list in the Batak customs. I can tell she genuinely regrets telling Dale that she may never pay back a visit to Scotland due to her sorta permanent financial state. Again no harm done, except maybe giving them money after that, but I've covered that on my first comment, which is practically also no worries. Scrolled through the comments and as expected, a lot of it mention the misunderstanding in which the girl didn't actually ask for money ( yet didn't refuse when given ). It's considered very rude to ask people for money let alone to foreigners, but it's also open to interpretation to whether it's rude to not accept what's bestowed by an older figure, since it's a common culture to respect elders. We could see that she felt hesitant at first, especially since she didn't ask for any money, yet went along with it. Kids in Toba are most polite, and typically shy and reserved, yet very warm and approachable. They would go out of their way to avoid offending people whom they just met. I've clearly underestimated how familiar these people are with English, since they speak the local Batak language and hardly even speak Bahasa Indonesia. The orange lady was gold. This is the third video of Toba I've thoroughly enjoyed from your channel. Props to your strong tummy for being able to safely digest those cendol and local delicacies without any problem. My brother in law lives on samosir island right near lake toba and it is such a beautiful part of the world and although 95% people are friendly you still need to be aware of your surroundings don't forget you are the bule/foreigners so hati hati 👍😊

I think you should use some simple vocabulary with the local people and repeat it 2 or 3 times. They will understand you. Avoid using long sentences or speaking too fast. Even in the Indonesia language, we understand better with simple sentences. Believe me, the locals are genuine and sincere people. They love talking to foreigners. Even for me, as a city boy, I love talking to the local people. They are friendly and nice. I can see that the locals are trying to bond with you. Some of them are just shy. Some are so open. No prejudice. They are welcoming you to their house and even let you see their toilet. That's how nice they are.

Cendol is originally Sundanese traditional drink. They made some those of jelly thing by pouring sagoo batter through a sieve. I love their coconut milk with palm sugar mix syrup with ice. So sweet and refreshing and when its best quality, you can taste the richness and saltiness from the coconut milk :9
