For clarification, as I don't have a Highland Bagpipe yet, the drones start with less pressure than the chanter? So to start the chanter air pressure must be increased?

That's exactly right BenG. Also, that's great you are getting time in on the chanter. You are setting up a good foundation for when you do get a set of pipes one day. Time on the chanter is time well spent!

are you pushing the air toward the back of the bag?

I don't have to strike in for the drones and chanter to sound. The chanter starts automatically when I inflate the bag enough on its own. Seems okay to me, does it to you?
