Never in all my years of building have I ever damaged a ram stick like that.
And I’ve dropped a ram stick or tried to force one in the wrong way .

As far as I could see, they had put in only two of the four sticks when the cooler was placed on top of them, so they didn't try to check if they would still work it seems

The guy that helped you is the same guy that sold me my new 5800x3d just a few weeks ago.
Also, even regardless of the piece that broke off of the ram stick I don't believe you would have been able to use both kits at the same time. I tried to do the same a few months back in my rig, but got a ton of issues. Game crashes, BSODs, and I was even prevented from making a clean Win10 install. Made a post on the r/corsair sub, and was told that each kit of ram is only validated to work with the other sticks in the kit so combining multiple kits would have these sorts of problems. I was told you can get them to work but you would have to set speeds, timing, voltage, etc. manually.
9700K is still rocking, he should go with only case and GPU upgrade.

Agreed. Had one up until recently. If I hadn't found a killer deal on an upgrade, I'd still be totally happy on a 9700k. Luckily they still go for decent $ so I almost broke even by selling it.
8000 and 9000 series are just weird to me, but at least they can still do the things they need to.
Skate, you’re wrong about his system when referring to his specific CPU model. He doesn’t have an i7 9700K. He has an i7 97000K! Yes, he said i7 97,000 K - the cpu from the distant, distant future! Perhaps a time parallel coexisting next to our timeline just in another dimension shoulder to shoulder with us. Even so likely as they are matching pace at a 1:1, second for second.

You have almost the same specs as mine! i5 10500 and a 1070 haha. I have a micro ATX board though that is bottlenecking my system. Lessons learned 😂

@@MojoWrangler I left all of mine on them. 4 sticks for 32GB. They originally lived with my 1700x, but then I decided to migrate them to a secondary system with a 6700k inside and get a newer kit for the main rig, which also got upgraded to a 5700x.
Waiting for the guy that’s still rocking an FX-6300 and R9 290X. These candidates recently got better base PCs than some of my friends 🫠

As big as I feel the Yonkers location is, you can fit at least one and a half Yonkers locations in that Charlotte location. Also, nice shot of being on the chair Greg. I’ll be buying my chair at Microcenter tomorrow (Saturday).
As much as I prefer AMD CPU’s, I have to admit that i5-12600KF bundle for $259 is a great deal. I do hope he keeps that EVGA 1070 as a collector’s item.
If I were him, I'd repurpose the old rig. I have my old 8700k and z790 platform that I just upgraded from and I'm planning on repurposing it to an HTPC (just for watching content). Maybe I'll get a second hand cheap gpu or I'll repurpose my 3060 when I do finally ungrade to a beefier gpu in a year or 2

Good use of the budget, IMO - and hopefully he can get that SMD component re-soldered onto the RAM so it can be re-used (or upgraded later down the line).

That new PC looks really good. And you are right, the RTX 4060 is a good card if you're upgrading from a much older card. Newer also means longer support and better warranty. Sometimes the people online are too demanding. Almost as if I'm not using an RTX 4090 I'm wasting my money.
Yes, only that and the fact it's 200 less than a 4070. The ti is about the same price maybe even 20 dollars more on eBay, so if anything get the Ti version if you can.
Pretty weird that Kim Jong Un, Jesse Eisen and Dr Disrespect all work in the same place. Even Gregs younger twin brother. I would have bought him an extra ram stick insted of the one he broke.

Man I wish we had a Microcenter here in Central Florida. Loved having CompUSA up in Altamone...hell, I remember when we had Computer City everywhere, too!
As to the 4060 - yeah, people denigrating it, there's a lot of budget minded folks coming from 10 series or 16 series or maybe even 20 series cards for whom that's a great upgrade. Not everyone's aim is 240fps @ 8k.
The 4060 isn't a bad card, it's bad value for the money. There are no bad gpu's, only bad pricing. AMD dominates for value at the lower tiers.
I currently use a 4060 for my first pc and its great for 1080p gaming in every game like esports often reaching high fps its a good card but pricing dont make sense ill probably get a 4070 soon

@connornelson5716 If the 4060 is getting the job you need it to do done, I wouldn't change a thing. Too many people upgrade for no good reason imo. I wouldn't upgrade to get better 1080p performance. I would only upgrade if you want to go 1440p, which I would highly recommend. The difference between 1080p and 1440p is massive. The difference between 1440p and 4k isn't nearly as noticeable. It's kind of like 60hz vs 120hz, and 120hz vs 240hz.
I have that 4060 and play at 4k 60 frames. The card does run hot because it has a bad fan curve, but you can change the curve and it runs just fine.
The 12600KF is a powerful CPU without a doubt. It marginally outperforms an i9 11900K in many tasks. The only issue with these, honestly, is the "F" skew/no iGPU. For what is commonly the marginal price difference, having the onboard graphics can be clutch in a troubleshooting situation.

The "nothing" part of double or nothing wouldn't make for a very long video though... but I would like to see the minimum amount to be increased to something like 800. it always feels like a bit of a disappointment if you could've gotten 1200 but landed on half of that (even though it's free money!)
I have a microcenter literally a couple miles from where I live. They are the best for PC upgrade needs.

I once worked on a PC that a stick of ram was left in the bottom of the case snapped in half because who cares about lining up the keyway, just push as hard as possible.
He said he lives an hour away. Here in the UK an hour away would not seem local for me. Scan (20min for me) is our Microcentre but what we need here is Greg!

I can't quite believe they don't have a Micro Center in Orlando. The one for Miami has been "coming soon" forever and I don't want to drive 4 hours to go to it when they finally open.
The only problem I have with this is almost all cases have dropped internal dvd-rom and most drive bay support.

Maybe it's time to slowly upgrade to DDR5 and that little stunted RTX 4060 is the Queen of 1080p gaming ! (Although the RTX 4070 has an effective speed of +55%)
That Cougar case is so under rated and good value for the price. I had that on my check list until the NZXT flow (2024) came onto the market.
Another excellent upgrade! I hope you were able to sort out the RAM issue and send the viewer home with 32 GB of RAM :)
The only thing I might've done differently would be to keep the old case and spring for a M.2 boot drive. But that's minor, SATA is still plenty fast and those 850 EVOs are excellent SSDs that hold up well even approximately a decade later.

As someone who loves microcenter.......Microcenter probably isn't the best solution when you have a tight budget.

Repurpose ram, destroy ram stick immediately. Not the worst thing ive seen. I saw my dad drop a flat head in a brand new abit p35 pro board directly into the dimm slot. Had to RMA it.
That is such a good price for that cpu, mobo, ram combo. In my country $250 isn't even enough for a brand new 12600kf let alone the z series motherboard and some ram. 😅

I starting my pc journey. I cant afford everything at once. I had to put my case on a pay in 4 plan, but I ordered me a pc case. It may take a year to get everything componet wise to get it started, but Im gonna eventually build my own gaming pc.

I went to Walmart today and they are selling i9 13900k for $290 and the 12900k for $500. I mean I know that 13th gen is having problems but that's a heck of a sale. It's nothing compared to microcenter but it's pretty great.

Very smart repurpose of the old parts. Samsung EVO Sata drives are very reliable. I almost didn't feel the difference in load times between my old 850 EVO and newer M2

I feel ya on no microcenter in Florida, not that I'd want to drive to Orlando or Tampa, I'd rather drive there than have to drive to GA from the pasco area. One reason why I've never been to one.
Dunno why Greg likes that cpu cooler it’s monstrous! Every time I buy a pc with that cooler I swap it instantly. Vetroo or CoolerMaster cooler look better and performance is good.

I love these videos. If I ever actually got picked for one of these or if I could do it myself I'd spend my entire budget on a Small Form Factor case and some nice cooling because honestly I've already got the hardware I need (aside from a small motherboard) but I think something simple would put me in a better headspace at my desk when doing things. I love watching these videos they are so fun and relaxing.
I just did a 12600kf bundle build to go in my semi. I switched the motherboard out for a mITX board and paired it with a RX6600.
Its okay Greg, we're going to get one in Miami soon enough. I so plan to go opening weekend.

I really loved this video made me really wish that there was a micro center near me :( its depressing there isnt it looks like so much fun.
I have a 4060 TI and it works great. There are some 4K limitations (Only that I run high settings rather than Ultra) but it is working great. My games run great and the $$$ saved meant a much better upgrade elsewhere including an M.2 4T Drive.
If he just adds a nice M.2 to that build it would be a good performance boost.
i can confirm that about ppl not removing the peel from those vengeance ram's. i had gotten a 8gb pair of ddr3 used to upgrade a older pc and both sticks still had the peel. and recently got a 8gb kit but of ddr4 and that one also had the peel 😂 same has happened with a few other used stuff ive gotten. so not only got that used value but i also got the peel asmr enjoyment

Microcenter needs to come to the northwest. Theres literally nothing close to me other than a couple little pc repair shops with ancient inventory at a 50% markup. So i have to buy everything online or drive 2 hours to Portland.
