    I have so many great memories with this game. At the time, the only place that I knew it was available was Chuck E. Cheese, and the only way for me to get there was to be part of a friend or classmates birthday party. Needless to say, I always tried really hard (and was often successfully able) to convince them to have their birthday party there, just so I could play some more.
    And for those that are unfamiliar with Chuck E. Cheese, you're in for a wild ride. There's a dude in a giant rat costume. Overpriced and bad pizza is served. There's some mechanical puppet shows and they're kind of terrifying. It has a huge arcade and a playpen riddled with every possible substance that a child could deliver. If you went in the ballpit as a child, you're likely immune to the corona virus and will live forever. What a place.

      Wonderful sentiment but these games aren't really what can be called side-scrollers. That would be Bad Dudes, Shinobi, Altered Beast or Kung Fu Master. THOSE are side-scrollers, or action games. Turtles, X-men, Double Dragon, Golden Axe and the like are all BEAT'EM-UPS.

    Why couldn't Acclaim make deals with Konami and release home versions of X-Men, The Simpsons, Aliens. 32x or Saturn ports would have been killer apps.

    • @Hektols
      @Hektols 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agree. Saturn even had a six players adaptator that would have allowed a full arcade experience.
      I guess that it was due to Capcom owning the X-Men rights at that time, but it's all right, they made Children of the Atom and it led Marvel Superheroes and the Marvel VS Capcom series.

    • @Nick_Nightingale
      @Nick_Nightingale 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Hektols I agree some what. I think Sega had X-Men/Spiderman home rights for a time and then I believe Acclaim got Spiderman and possibly Wolverine (Adamantium Rage?). Capcom had X-Men and Marvel SNES games. I'm glad that it seems WB (DC) and Marvel are getting more control of their properties with regards to current videogames. However, I wish their was a better effort to have collections of these comic book games.

    Their arcade debut had a number of different configurations but its largest one allowed six players to co-0p through the adventure together on a giant cabinet equipped with a double monitor setup. One monitor was hidden below inside the cabinet and reflected up to create a widescreen effect allowing all six players to see what was going on. It was similar to the same technique used by Taito in '86, ’87, '89, and '92 using a three monitor setup for their Darius, Sagaia, The Ninja Warriors, and Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode 3 to create a triple widescreen (but which only had 2-player co-op) and Tecmo's Tecmo Bowl in '87. It was a far cry from Galaxian 3’s 28-player theater but small enough to fit into a local arcade with room to spare. The original arcade cabinet supported up to 4-players and used the exact same hardware hugely popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and its sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Crime Fighters, Punk Shot, The Simpsons, Vendetta, Sunset Riders, and G.I. Joe.

    There three things I remember about this game.
    First thing I remember is playing this monster size arcade machine at the local bowling alley, next one is there is a two player version at a skiing place that I went to for a school field trip as well place had a old Fun House pinball machine which is one of my favorite pinball games, and the last part is if not the best part is it only cost one quarter to play where if you die in the middle it cost a quarter to continue playing unlike most arcade games I played in the 90's that cost way over 50 cents.
    I'm very sure you wouldn't be disappointed with the game unless you forgot pack few extra quarters.

  • @MeatSnax
    @MeatSnax 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "6 playable characters" at a time thing is so genius. You're much less likely to get off the cabinet after a game over if your 5 friends are still playing. Birthday party? You can all either split off onto different games, watch and take turns, or just play X-Men. The presentation alone encouraged me to just not stop hitting continue, I don't know what it was, but X Men was one of the few games I was ok with dumping all my quarters into.

    It's one of the rare games i managed to end in arcade when I was a teen(not counting the various times I won on emulator). I was in an arcade with a friend of mine and some guys were playing the game. We didn't want to disturb but at some point we were like "ok let's get in". The guys were ok to play with us and we ended up playing the damn game with my friend along with 4 strangers. We did lost some tokens but i had a blast teaming up with some dudes to kick Magneto's ass. In the end, everyone was like "cool" and we all went on our separate ways, without asking for our names or whatever. It was just six guys playing an X-Men game, wining and going home. Still one of my best gaming memories to this day

    I remember this game. You could beat it on one credit (no continues), but you had to know how to deal with some of the cheap traps in that game and the boss patterns.
    I think Storm was the easiest to use to 1 credit it. Beat it several times with her. TMNT1 had similar patterns and I was able to beat that one too. Simpsons was hard, I could make it to the last boss but coudn't beat him. Turtles in Time was impossible due to the "Stealth nerfs" which would kill solo players who took more than 5 minutes and 9 seconds to pass a level (this could be avoided until the Pirate ship map, when even if you used a stopwatch to time the "kill bomb", there was just not enough time to react because the level floor was closer to the top of the screen.

  • @ivanhenley
    @ivanhenley 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I played the crap out of this game back in the day. It kept me coming to the arcade when my local arcade got rid of the TMNT game (which irked me endlessly). Nightcrawler and Dazzler were my go-to characters. It was pretty fun going solo, but it was endlessly awesome when other players were in on it too. I also liked that, after the credits, it looped back to the beginning and kept going so that it didn't feel like that one more coin was wasted just to finish off Magneto.
    There was one time I was playing as Nightcrawler and all other five characters were taken by other players. The dude playing Storm kept laughing his ass off every time I had Nightcrawler jumping on fallen enemies. It never failed. Every single time Nightcrawler hit downed enemies... raucous laughter from my immediate right. It never seemed to get old for him, either. By the final stage, he would still crack up at that every bit as much as he had in stage one. It was crazy.
    Even back then I got why there was never a home port of the six-player version, but since they'd done a four-player version as well, I thought they could have at least tried a home multi-player version on the SNES using the SNES Multitap (I also wished they'd done this for Battletoads Arcade, another favorite of mine). Sure, it wouldn't have been exactly like the arcade game, but it would have been something. After all, Turtles In Time made a good SNES game. (And speaking of the Multitap... but, what's the use?)
    Anyway. It was an incredibly fun game, especially with other people.

    Lmao I LOVED this game. They had the six player version at the arcade by my grandparents house in the second half of the 90s. The only problem was the Storm controls had a broken attack button, so she could only jump and use her special. But Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus... and Dazzler lol all worked. I used to go to the arcade in our mall when I was like...5 I think and I would pump all of my quarters into this game. Played it every week for probably 2 years straight.

    I loved that game and still do, there is a local Barcade that has it. I also bought it for the iPhone some years ago, unfortunately it hasn't received updates for the newer OS's. I didn't know it was once on PSN, I hope it still is.

    Back in the early 90s, I was 10 or so and there was an arcade very near where I was living. It took me a while to really aknowledge that big Xmen machine and back then I was thinking that Wolverine's name is XMEN !! I was playing the snes game Spiderman Xmen : arcade revenge and it was then that I became more and more interested about the characters names and details , stuff like SCOTT SUMMERS aka CYCLOPS . Then I went back to the arcade with that info in mind and the game felt great !! It was still a hard game to finish and I would only get past lvl1 or lvl2. At one point my mom brought me to the arcade and she watched me play some. Good memories !!

    Konami really knew how to make fantastic and addictive Arcade games with little to work with. ( Xmen had to work with a failed Xmen pilot and even the Simpsons had only the 1st 2 seasons worth of material). Yet, made some truly epic and memorable gameplay that still made us fans clammer with our quaters to play more!!!!

    I'm so mad at myself I didn't download it to my PS3 before Disney forced them to remove it and everything Marvel from the PSN store when they had beef with Fox. Had so many great memories playing 6player in arcades.

    Thanks for the memories. I didnt remember how bad the fighting animations and fluidity were. This game was greater in my memories :P
    That arcade setup was amazing, although it must be annoying playing on the far sides. That Gaunlet game was also amazing in those years, with the huge screen far away from the control panels. And then came that Nascar game :D
    I remember as a kid in vacation with my family in the US, all I wanted to do was go to the arcades to play this X-Men game, the Terminator shooter and Street Fighter 2 :P instead of the boring beach hahaha

    A local pizza hut had the 6 player game, I loved going thru it even if it was a quarter muncher. Playing the game again on my PS3, it's far easier than the cranked up arcade setting, and the japanese version works it so you only lose health when you fire off the mutant power without an orb rather than always losing health. There's also health powers up and bonus orbs thats enemies drop.

    This Konami classic and The Simpsons Arcade are two of the best beat em up ever, it is a damn shame that there are no ports of this gems for any console, they were only available digitaly on xbox live arcade and ps store for the xbox 360 and PS3 but just for a short period of time,but they no longer are in this stores anymore... DAMNED YOU KONAMI, RE RELEASE THIS GAMES!!!
