Don't forget to make sure you are up on your symbols and blue print reading... Your weld test can be 100% spot on but if you don't know or forget your symbol meanings or have issues reading prints it can cost you an interview. Learned that the hard way... Forgot one symbol meaning and lost a job... So work to remember them😁

I honestly can't believe what I just read from your comments. I'm writing an article series to help veterans transition to civilian careers and the current topic is welding. I'm so happy that I came across this community during my research because I was this close to spreading the lie that there's a shortage of welders and that the pay is heavenly. My biggest issue is that I've got Cerebral palsy so companies are really iffy once they hear I've got a disability and it doesn't help that I never really got a full grasp during school because of It so now I have to find a shop that will take me and help me become the best welder I can be
Absolutely have somebody write your resume. Those people usually worked as HR and know exactly how HR thinks, nothing wrong with using $10 words if you can back them up. Every time I had my resume built I had multiple offers within 24 hours.
All good comments from the panel. When in welding or the construction field you have to go where the money is and when that is over, go where the money is and keep repeating it. Very few every find a job paying bank locally unless you get lucky and start your own company and find a niche, but even that dries up at some point.
Keep in mind all these people that are talking. Are selling a service as in teaching and training. They want you to buy into there company and try to make the future look bright. I have been welding for years show up on time work late and willing to learn and teach my self. Have a positive attitude. And have many certifications. In 4 process. Also have done and learned alot of fab as well as CNc. Let me say this the pay for these skills are not there there is no upward mobility. You will be doing the same job on your first day as your last at age 70. It's a job of passion and being poor it's not a job for old age.
Go be a helper on the pipeline for 6 months to a year. Rig up your truck(2500-3500 truck) sa200 or better welder. Bevel machines and practice that 1104 weld test: take them until you pass and go from there. Make 150k plus
Having a major problem, won't mention the schools name or instructors names but I went to welding school to make a career, and it was during covid and all that and that made it really difficult and alot of it was online and crammed no time to learn what we were even doing. we went through print reading in 1 day, and welding symbols in like 3 days. I've studied the symbols myself so I'm good there but I've really struggled to grasp print reading on my own, and both welding instructors about 3 months into school were buddies and lined up a really high paying job together, and for like a 2 months they did not come into the booths to explain anything or teach anything, they didn't even teach us how to read a tape measure for God's sake you could hardly find where they were and for like a month they both just stood at a table running tig up hill all day didn't know they were practicing a weld test. then they just up and quit without giving a notice, and yes something was mentioned to the people over the school multiple times. They hired a new instructor to fill in and he was a really nice guy and did try to actually teach, but he didn't even know how to tig so I couldn't even learn to tig weld. He lined me a job up at a factory won't mention the name doing production mig, not a very good place to work I mean honestly I barely knew what I was doing and my welds looked better than anyone's there, and I'm not bragging trust me. Well I lost that Job due to some personal family medical reasons and a very very strict points system, so my feelings aren't that hurt there was really nothing I could do. Now I have been looking for a job for like 2 months, and the only one I can find Is a shop that does open root 6010 pipe, and I don't feel qualified and now I just don't know what to do, I really don't wanna give up on welding, I really went into this eager to learn and kinda got messed over. I can't afford school again any suggestions or relatable stories maybe would help don't know if I should cut my losses with welding, or get a job welding doing something I have no idea what I'm doing and probably mess a bunch of crap up, and look like a moron because I know I could pass the weld test to get it it's a flat and over head T joint 7018. I'm not making excuses cause literally half my class dropped out and took different paths, and I tried to stick it out please any advice I'm about to have to be a dishwasher just to make ends meet.
@@itsDjjayyArt honestly it's not man and some of us have families and I'm just gonna break it to people and if this includes you man I'm sorry but I know alot of guys who have got outta trades and just went and found long term employment somewhere that wasn't a skilled trade like construction it pays the bills welding is becoming a very competitive industry and I know guys who have been doing it since the 70s and either lost their job to a robot or due to the fact that for the most part if you're not able to travel and do pipe or structural most welders are being replaced because of the advanced mig technology where it's just so easy to dial these machines in and Diesel shops and train manufacturing shops ect are just teaching their technicians to make half cocked welds with a mig or do some 7018 that looks like hammered whale crap and saving a potential 50 to 60k a year by not hiring a welder to come in and specifically make repairs or fabricate and they'll tell you in school welders can make six figures and that's true but read any labor statistics and they'll tell you the facts only about 15% ever make above 75k annually and out of that 15% they're either traveling 6 months out of the year or own their own business for the largest Majority they make an average between 30k to 45k that you can make doing a simple 8 hour Monday through Friday assembly line or warehouse job with little to no stress or responsibility compared to welding and fabricating basically what I'm saying is dont get into this because of the money there are forums and forums of skilled welders complaining about the low pay for the skill they've worked so hard for so either this is something you really want do and you'll be happy with a median salary or find something else and in my opinion all the things I've said have come from 30 year experienced welders who were shop leads and everything what is happening to this amazing career that so many people have worked so hard to perfect is being taken away in alot of areas and I think it's horrible it's now become a career that everything around you like your economy and ability to not see family affects this industry alot more than others sorry for this long comment but I just want people that are just getting into this to really look at their area and see if you actually have the job opportunity around them because not parts of the world does and not everyone can pack up and move and my instructor straight up told me they lie to students about most of the opportunity because most schools receive their funding based on how many people graduate the class but if anyone is thinking about this I wish you the best of luck and hope you have tons of opportunities that I sadly didn't have and can flourish in this industry and just to clarify this doesn't apply to everyone you may live in an area where you can make a life long career with this I understand that so I don't want anyone getting upset with me but just don't do what I did I rushed into this and didn't realize I actually had like 3 jobs to choose from that are like an hour away lol yeah in hindsight I could've chose something different and not wasted a year of my life

I kinda feel you bro. I'm fortunate to be in a decent welding school and I'm confident saying I'm decent at it. But I'm slowly starting to lose interest in it. Not because it's boring, (I actually find it quite fun) but I don't really see myself doing it as a job. More of a hobby than anything. I really want to get into autobody but there's only one school in my state. I'm gonna try to put myself out there with these autobody shops and see if I can land a job, hopefully putting these welding/fab skills I learned to good use
@@kaz9687 yeah im also trying Auto body that's a great idea and really there is some welding in auto body and most welding jobs what they don't tell you is welding is only like 8% of your job if you're a welder you might spend 6 hours measuring, cutting,grinding, bolting stuff together, preheating helping someone else, driving a forklift, and then you might do like an hour at best actually welding the only welding jobs where you actually keep the hood down all day is production and that will ruin welding entirely for you I think you're making the right decision good luck to you man let me know if you land a good job👍👍👍
I've been having trouble finding a weld job bc a lot of people want experience. I just don't understand, I mean there is a high demand for welders but how to they expect to make more welders when they aren't hiring people out of school. I mean I know how to weld like come on....
That is great and all but if there is no demand do not expect to be getting anywhere after college because when demand is low you have much higher qualified welders waiting in line ahead of you. So best you can do is get a job in a similar setting. Then go from there.

I have ear guages and I can mig Tig stick run our fadal machining center do all our metrology and cad cam it's never about how you look it's how you present yourself you can have 20 piercings and if your there and worth your weight it goes way beyond your appearance
And building off that in an interview I've been asked how did you learn welding and I replied I was self taught and alot of beer and that alone struck a conversation. Act like who is interviewing you is your best friend. They are interviewing many people and that can get boring you can lighten it up for them too and change the pace
I've been in that position you just need to try your best. That's how I learned how to use a press brake. I was at a new job and was thrown into the fire but don't be afraid to ask questions I was able to do production tool box fabrication for utility trucks faster than any school

Yeah it definitely depends on the guy. I’m lucky to have met some great guys and will take their advice to my grave, but have also met some old guys who lack that wisdom and should be ignored
