    Love to see Big L finally getting some love. LOTPAD is one of my favorite albums of all time and people have been mad sleeping on it. One of my favorite bars on Danger Zone is: "Jumped out the Lincoln, left him stinkin', put his brain in the streets and you could see what he was just thinking." A true wordsmith.

    really glad I found this. You deliver your lines in a real professional and calm way that make the video just breeze by, you ain't forcing in jokes into your editing or script which makes the video seem way more personal and it's very clear you know your shit. I'm basically now going through all your videos to try and take in as much knowledge as I can. Keep up the good work, you're gonna get some good attention someday

    I like ya style B, definitely like the nongeneric list, your 7 picks were quite good. Having El-P and MF Doom on there, that alone shows you are not some casual passerby to Hip Hop. One of my favorite songs, "Pigeon" by Cannibal Ox , (El-p production) was just recently introduced to me by my 14 year old son, I'm 38, and thought that I was well learned in all areas of the craft, so having my son show me something new that literally came out before he was born was pretty awesome.

    The real introduction to punchline rap was Big L's mentor Lord Finesse in 1990 with his album Funky Technician
    Jay Z didn't freestyle The Black Album. He may have structured his verses in his head before recording instead of writing them down the way Biggie did, or Wayne or Conway does, but that's categorically different from coming up with your lyrics on the spot. If Jay really freestyled that whole album, he'd be considered the best freestyler on the planet.
    The blueprint for underground Hip Hop lyricism wasn't Doomsday, it was Funcrusher Plus. And when you think about it, there was way more music that sounded like that than Doomsday. You had Aesop Rock, the entire Anticon crew, Cannibal Ox, Non-Phixion, Mr. Lif, Jedi Mind Tricks all making albums with weird sci-fi references, off kilter fast flows (except for Cannibal Ox, who were much slower), much more battle-rap oriented lyrics, abstract lyricism, anti-corporate/pro-independent themes, etc. If anything Company Flow paved the way for DOOM by creating a trend for off-kilter, original and nerdy styles of rap and production. (And that's not a diss, I love nerd rap.) Don't get me wrong, DOOM has had a huge influence in Hip Hop from 2010 to 2020, but from 2000 to 2010 he didn't really influence any prominent rapper's style.
    I love that Gravediggaz album, but I really don't know why it's on here. I can't think of a single album with a clear Gravediggaz influence.

    I remember being 15, rummaging through the hip hop section at F.Y.E, looking for an album cover to catch my eye and I stumbled upon Grave Diggaz.
    The aesthetic was dark in contrast to the other albums on the shelf, as were the contents inside, but not so much as to push the listener away.
    The production was clean, the lyrics were grimy and the overall sound was very abstract, especially for the year it was recorded in (which blew my mind).
    That album steered my ear towards alternative/ underground hip hop and that's where it's been ever since!

  • @rorymunro28

    Very refreshing take. I would never hate on someone's opinion but it is tiring to see the same albums over and over again in this category, whether it's things like College Dropout, MBDTF, MMLP, The Chronic, Die Lit TPAB (which I love), Take Care. All these albums I'm sure are amazing in their own way but I love seeing a list with 6 Feet Deep, Fantastic Damage, Operation Doomsday, Paid in Full. For me it's such a rare thing to see. Great video.

    Jay doesn't write down his rhymes, but that doesn't mean it's a "freestyle". he formulates the verse in his head, and spits it, but it's not just "off the top".

  • @MuiltiLightRider
    @MuiltiLightRider 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like all your picks but if there's one I'd switch out it'd be The Black Album for The Blueprint. I think the Black Album is probably a better overall album than the Blueprint but the Blueprint was super influential sonically in pushing soul sampling to the forefront of Hip-Hop and providing the launch pad for Just Blaze and Kanye to become as big as they are. And you can even see how big it was by how much people reference it from Nicki's Pinkprint to Gucci's Burrprint. The Black Album was the perfect retirement/send-off album that nobody's really even come close to touching since but the Blueprint was influential in that it was how a rapper cemented their legacy as a possible GOAT without needing to get gunned down. Also Illmatic was influential in that it was one of the first albums to get a bunch of producers from different camps to come together and make a sonically cohesive album. Something that you'd also see the Blueprint replicate years later

    Lord Finesse was known for punchlines before Big L and was a direct influence on him. Big L and Lord Finesse had a funny interaction where Big L wanted to rap for him and said if he thought it was wack he'd never bother him again, but Finesse was impressed and the rest is history.
    Black Album wasn't freestyled. Jay-Z has an amazing memory and can write songs in his head. He """wrote""" his Brooklyn's Finest verse in about 20 minutes, and this is what motivated Biggie to stop writing.
    The funny thing with El-P is he had three important projects he worked with: Company Flow, Fantastic Damage and Cold Vein. It is kind of difficult to pick which one is arguably more important because each were very important to their respective lanes. It must have been a nightmare choosing between FanDam and Funcrusher though.
