Because it's been shown you can hit for power and have a high batting average without striking out a lot. Pujols still wasn't striking out a lot against todays pitchers even in his diminished form. None of this is to take away from Soto, he's definitely one of the top players of this latest generation, but it's really hard to be like the guy is amazing outside of his ability to walk a lot. Maybe he'll develop into something greater. I don't know. He kind of gives me Joey Votto vibes.

Heck, even prime roided Bonds put up his 01-04 seasons against the shift. The great hitters just get it done regardless. The fact that, we, the fans, are being forced to settle for this garbage they call baseball now a days is sad and depressing. I really hope some actually great hitters come along at some point, but its probably a pipe dream. With all that said, maybe Soto will develop into a fine hitter. He is still pretty young.

I recently played my second regular season of MLB The Show 24's March to October with the Reds. In a weird twist, I signed Juan Soto, and he ended up destroying the league with an insane 94 homers and a .389 BA. Even crazier, I traded for Rafael Devers and he hit 74 homers. I also had a game against the Rockies in Denver where I started in the 7th inning down 1-0, and scored 93 runs across the three innings I played. Soto hit nine home runs in that game. Devers hit TEN. At the end of the season, I checked player stats, and I somehow had half the team hit over 40 home runs. Yes, I am playing on the easiest difficulty, but I've never had anything like that season or that game happen before. Prior to the 93 run game, I had only ever gotten 30-something runs in a game two or three times.

Soto is amazing, and as a Yankees fan, he has been incredible to watch. But I honestly think he is slightly overrated. I understand the Nats weren't that great of a team most of his time there, but if you look at his production, it is top 5-10 player in baseball caliber but it is not other worldly. Career high in runs is 111. Career high average outside of a 60 game season was .313. Career high homers was 35. Career high RBIs was 110. Career high OPS outside of the 60 game season was .999. Dont get me wrong. This guy gets on base a TON. Commands the strike zone like no other. He's two steps ahead of the pitcher at all times. But he doesn't score a ton of runs, he doesn't do damage with his bat the way the top guys do, and he doesn't drive in a ton of runs. But... he is only 25 so that can all change.
Nationals for debut into the spotlight Padres was a buffer and waste of time, and as a dodgers fan. New York is where Soto belongs he has the energy and attitude for the Yankees. He was born to be a yankee, the pinstripes suit him well.

You realize that over the course of a full 162 game season the worst expected difference in runs between Soto and an average fielder is -6? Like you’re going to waste your DH spot because one of your fielders at his worst is expected to allow 6 more runs over 162 games. That is idiotic. A team is almost guaranteed to have a worse fielder than that or someone who needs the DH spot for rest purposes. Not to mention, Soto has a slightly above average arm. If the Yankees are able to keep him in a small right field where he doesn’t have to run far, he will likely grade as a plus defender.
