Great idea for the bedding, those are mighty looking ewes. Can't beat having a wee tractor about the place, that and a quad are 2 of the best tools you can have, takes some skill to drive that wee digger.👍
I use a digger for feeding silage in a passage too. Start at the end end roll it backwards. Then track back up and push it in. Savage job, way better than a tractor in a shed.
If there was a market for rushes, furze bushes, briars, nettles, thistles, docks, ragwort, sally trees, etc. , we'd all be millionaires, lol. The main thing is, the sheep look in great condition. A fine high shed too. Great stuff.
I'm impressed with your ingenuity! The equipment still runs well, serves a good purpose, cuts down on manual labour....I'm sure you can use your hard earned money elsewhere. Love following you! 👍🏻
Can't bate an ould Massey. I had a wheelbarrow before I got a Massey 165 from 1969 and I can't even imagine the endless hours of backache she has saved me.
Good man Dave great to see your operation on TH-cam. If the digger is piped for a grab would something like the bridgeway bale unwider make the job even easier?
👍excellant, i have a wee digger for pushing up silage, but the fork for hay and straw brilliant. Would it be better to keep the outside and center tines, and remove the rest to stab the bale easer?
do you have extra hydraulics for say a thumb. You could have a skidsteer bucket mount frame on there and then use a bale spinner. I made one using a front wheel bearing and a hydraulic motor.
great video on the bedding the rushes is a good job keeps down on expense . what is the lent of your shed as i am looking to put up one looks good keep up the video.
@@alexjamesbebbington4606 hinged doors of that size (4m) are too dangerous. Sliding door is a safer option but not that much difference in price with a roller door.
If you could put a hydraulic motor on your spike you could make it into a bale unroller, you'd need less spike an it wouldn't shake you machine to bits an probably spread your baled better!
Even if you had a tractor, You'd still be quicker feeding out the hay the way your doing it with the digger. Tractor and front loader would be handy for getting the bales and dropping them into the feed passage.
We have got the same type of setup, we have the muck forks of the loader tractor what I can just remove some bolts and then use on the tractor again. It also good for Mucking out as well, in the shed as it a bit tight for space. We have used hay for beeding as well.
I've a tractor and loader, and small sheds. Honestly, I think you are better off with what you have. I've been thinking of getting a skidsteer or something because I'm forking the whole time in winter.
You probably have had the farming and machinery experts on to ya already, do this do that, your doing that all wrong bla bla bla I think you're doing it just grand and you have a good system going there,,, so fair play
I though I recognised that accent, good to see a fellow Cavan man on TH-cam. Best of luck 👍
Thank you Adrian, love your channel. I've been watching you make it look easy for years....😀
Have a cup of tea lads. Preferably Barry’s
Nice system. The ewes look healthy and enjoy for your treatment
Thank you. Welcome to the channel..
Greetings from a Cavan man living it up in California. I enjoy watching your farm work and learning a little along the way.
Your are very welcome to the channel! Good to know you are the videos...👍
Handy digger to have..well done 👍
It's a great machine around the farm...👌

Great use of what you have, Well done and not blowing the budget
Thank you... not hard to blow the budget when you're sheep farming 😀
Luv your inginuity look after that fergie
Nice system, the ewes look well 👍
Thank you, ewes are good condition. Hope for a good scan now...🤞

Thank you for your kind comments! Great to have you along....👌
Handy machine, you've mighty sheds
Every sheep farm needs a wee Massey and link box they make an excellent hearse🤣
🤣 it's a sad reality of sheep farming that the hearse will be needed at some stage...
Can't bate an ould Massey. I had a wheelbarrow before I got a Massey 165 from 1969 and I can't even imagine the endless hours of backache she has saved me.
Great video noting wrong with that bedding does the job 👌
Thanks Gary....👍
Good man Dave great to see your operation on TH-cam. If the digger is piped for a grab would something like the bridgeway bale unwider make the job even easier?
Hi John, unfortunately digger is not piped for a third service but it has a spare slice on the valve chest. Maybe some day....🤞
👍excellant, i have a wee digger for pushing up silage, but the fork for hay and straw brilliant. Would it be better to keep the outside and center tines, and remove the rest to stab the bale easer?
Agree 100%. It's a bit tricky to stab the bales but much better with all the tines for picking up loose leftovers at the barrier.
do you have extra hydraulics for say a thumb. You could have a skidsteer bucket mount frame on there and then use a bale spinner. I made one using a front wheel bearing and a hydraulic motor.
Good idea.. have a spare valve on the chest. Just need to run pipes down the jib for an extra service.
Great idea! Ideal for cleaning out too 👍
Thank you...👍
great video on the bedding the rushes is a good job keeps down on expense . what is the lent of your shed as i am looking to put up one looks good keep up the video.
Thank you...👍 Shed is 29metres long and 15metres wide. I will make a video of shed and all the ewes in it for lambing time.
Would be good to know the pros and cons of roller shutter doors vs hinged, the costings are causing me an issue of debate
@@alexjamesbebbington4606 hinged doors of that size (4m) are too dangerous. Sliding door is a safer option but not that much difference in price with a roller door.
You could try a cheap straw blower, it could bed as well as feed them.
Brilliant video. Great looking shed! When does the lambing start?
Thank you.... starting to lamb around 10th of March. Hope all the rough weather has cleared by then...🤞
How long are you farming David? How did you get into farming?
Cracking video as always
Thank you....👍
Great vid.How long does the bedding last.
I had 180 ewes on that side for scanning and it needed bedding every 2 or 3 days..
I wouldn't bother with a tractor I don't think it will be any better for you. Your machine is really handy!
If you could put a hydraulic motor on your spike you could make it into a bale unroller, you'd need less spike an it wouldn't shake you machine to bits an probably spread your baled better!
Thank James. I could manage without the tractor for the feeding but think a tractor and a straw chopper would speed up the bedding...
@@sheepschool365 it would, but is it worth it for the cost!
@@jamestatham9950 think I've come up with a budget option. If it works I'll stick it in a video...
This seems to work well for you. No need to get expensive machinery. In farming we got to work with what we have 👍🏽
You are dead right....👌
That's a fine sheep shed. Is it grant spec?
It's a TAMS2 grant spec shed. Will make a video on it in the near future..
Enjoyed
Great shed, rushes = cavan straw, hear the puppies, stock looking well, all the best from the west cavan shepherd, 😶
Thank you Patrick.. plenty of sheep in west Cavan...👌
The Dillagh men would show you how to sheep farm cheaply. The tractor is as old as Matheusilm ram .Nice stock and shed
Thanks you....👌
What size is the meal silo in the shed ?
I can squeeze 6 ton into it if I fill meal barrow...
Can you just unroll the bales by hand (or machine) as a simpler option?
Yes. It's quite easy to roll them out but find it easier to spread out bedding when bales are shaken out with digger.
Even if you had a tractor, You'd still be quicker feeding out the hay the way your doing it with the digger. Tractor and front loader would be handy for getting the bales and dropping them into the feed passage.
I made a short of feeding all the sheep in the shed... I think your right 👌

What breed are the ewes?
Look like llyens
I have a video on the breed of ewes I'm running and why they're working in the pipeline. Will be ready in the very near future...
@@sheepschool365 looking forward to it
That’s a great idea can’t see how a tractor and loader would be quicker. Stick to what works for you.
I've a tractor and loader, and small sheds. Honestly, I think you are better off with what you have. I've been thinking of getting a skidsteer or something because I'm forking the whole time in winter.
Think a straw blower would be a great time saver for bedding. Maybe someday....🤞
No Swing onTractor probably wouldn't work as well as the digger
The digger is very handy in tight spots....
I always thought a rubber duck is the ideal machine for feeding... Lads think I'm mad 😂
That makes two of us...😀
a two pronged grape would be easier than the one you are using otherwise top marks
Have a 2 prong fork with no handle I will resurrect at some stage...👍Some people swear by a 3 pronged fork for silage...
@@sheepschool365 i have all 3 and always look for the 2 prong because it is so light
Rushes 🤔 know more about them that grass🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣 good shelter for young lambs though...😜
