I moved around a lot due to being in foster care and I’ve kept my cat as an ESA. I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten for him, after being depressed and stuck in a room a lot when I couldn’t let him out to moving home to home …. New roommate…. He’s grooming out his hair, and he’s skiddish now and it makes me very sad :(

I need someone to help me: My cat is very high anxiety and after a new person is over at my house, he attacks me because of how overstimulated and stressed he gets. Two other instances include the time he attacked me because he heard a new voice of someone on my phone, and when he heard a cat meow in distress outside. I don’t know what to do! I play with him until he gets tired, feed him good food, and he still cuddles with me. Since he’s a rescue, I’m thinking he has some sort of trauma. Can someone give me some advice?

My girl is old and has had UTI she is very nervous and timid from when we got her at 7 to 8 weeks and now she is about 14 years. She don't want to play with anyone or anything. When I can get her and hold her she will malt and meow loudly. She has been put on meds but drooled quite badly and it stoned her out. She will only eat under the table and nothing can be on at the time no washing machine, dryer etc, our house is not that big. What do we do. She is not aggressive and there has been no abuse to the cat as we had her since she was a baby.

There's some good advice here. However, pheromone diffuser products are only effective for a small percentage of cats. Due to their expense, I recommend investing in enrichment instead. Similarly, pharmaceuticals should only be utilized in conjunction with behavioral treatments. Just adding pharmaceuticals alone is a bit like adding air to a tire that has a nail in it - it doesn't actually solve the problem on its own.

You look smart my cat is a female cat, her sister had kittens. The problem is my cat think shes the mother of the kittens and she grooms the kittens. But she didn't let her sister (the mother of the kittens) give them milk. she gets angry when we try to remove her or touch the kittens, what I've done is continuously remove her and lock her in the other room for hours. and today she is not energetic and have symptoms of a stressed cat.(Its impossible that she had a previous condition or ate something toxic it's IMPOSSIBLE)I'm afraid i have STRESSED my cat because she doesn't want to interact or eat and TRYS to vomit out something( Gags everytime i touch her throat, she doesn'thave diarrhea either). She growls when i touch her/pick you up, as if she was angry and purrs(does a werid noise) when i barley touch her. What is wrong with my cat? Will she die? I had the exact same situation with my cat. She was a rescue and she was dumped outside pregnant by her previous owners for two years until she was rescued. She was basically feral when they got her. She’s come a long way. When we first brought her home she would only allow me to spend any time with her. She wouldn’t come out of hiding or come downstairs for about a month. She absolutely hated my dad. It really just takes time and LOTS of patience with rescues. It took an entire year for her to allow my dad to touch her. Try just letting your family members play with her and spend short amounts of time with him in an area where he is most comfortable. It’s recommended that you isolate a new cat to one room when you first bring them home, this becomes their safe zone. I’d recommend doing that and letting your family slowly spend time with him and play with him in his safe zone and he will eventually come around. Try letting them feed him as well because he will associate feeding time (a positive situation) with them (a possibly uncomfortable situation for him) .

For furparents of cats who 'over groom' please be aware of Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome. It is often overlooked and misdiagnosed as anxiety. My vet has never talked with me about it, instead continues to treat my cat with steroids and antibiotics which do not help. He actually had a leg injury as a kitten and has had nerve issues and pain with it since. I highly suspect, after treating his over grooming with a variety of different medications that he has this syndrome, injury induced. Not not terribly common. The thing is with this condition, anxiety can make it worse. If you are having problems treating over grooming, sudden erratic behavior, sensitivity around the cats tail and rump, and skin "crawling" you might want to get your fur baby screened for this syndrome.

The source of her problem may be a medical issue if this has come up with no identifiable outside source causing it. It can be hard to tell when a cat is sick because they do a much better job hiding it than other animals, so I would highly recommend taking her to the vet as soon as you can.

I sure hope someone can shed some light on a certain thing my cat does from time to time. His name is Gizmo & he's a 7 yr old ginger cat. As a rule, his eating habits are fairly regular... he gets about 1/2 cup of food spread out in 6 feedings through out the day - 2 tsp. per feeding. But every now & then, he'll go through spurts where he refuses to eat. He usually only skips 2 or 3 meals & then he bounces right back. There's no reason that I can see for him doing this.... I make sure I sterilize his food & water bowls 3 times a week. I've been through this with the vet several times & she has no clue as to what's going on with him. I've also noticed that now & then, right after eating, he'll crouch down low & just cringe. Recently he's started acting like he's scared & anxious Any suggestions as to why he does this & what I can do to help him would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

@@doodie3654 We're still keeping them the rescue cat mostly separate from the other cats. Two of our cats are super mellow and sweet so we make sure she gets exposure to them daily and after weeks she's not as freaked out. But we also have two more territorial cats we'll keep in a separate room while she roams the house couple hours a day. She mostly prefers being in a room where she feels safe so at night she sleeps in my daughter's room with her, closed doors, no other cats. She has trauma so that's been an uphill battle. If you have any anxiety meds like Ativan, Xanax.... You can give quarter pill. Best thing to do is playtime and allow them to feel safe. Really hope that helps. Best of luck 🤞

@@doodie3654 You're the sweetest for helping a homeless cat. Tell your parents the reason I fell in love with our kitties was because I had a daughter bring in a stray cat few years ago. It took me a little while to get used to having an indoor cat but when I fell in love with the kitty I started rescuing more. We now have four cats with the other stray cat making it five. Anxiety support can be in the form of anxiety cat treats you can buy at Petco. Also make sure your sweet kitty gets grain free food and stay far away from vet food in the white bag, the hills stuff has been linked to many kidney problems with cats because they're not meant to digest things like wheat, corn, rice and things like carrageenan. Hope that helps being your first kitty😻👍😻👍😻👍. Bless your sweet heart for loving a cat 😊❤️

Let the cat explore the area on it's own and yes it take time. Don't try to hold or pick it up by force and when it's time the cat will come to you . So if Prozac helps, does it mean that the problem is that they do not have a PURPOSE? They cannot HUNT therefore they are aim-less.
Aim-less = NO dopamine = No action = Placing LOW in the social hierarchy = LOW serotonin as well.
Defeated lobsters retract themselves from the group and stop moving, getting depressed (aim-less), eventually to the point of letting themselves die.
I believe anxious cats NEED to go outdoors and run around, playing a LOT to compensate the lack of actual hunting.
NOTHING makes a cat more happy and stress-free than catching prey, there is no replacement.
