It's hard to say how much of the cost is due to a more labor intensive process or the cost of marketing and promoting a new product concept. I agree that it doesn't make sense to pay more for less actual lumber.
It’s a convenience fee, meaning it’s convenient for the average person to install. And their product is first to the market and they believe themselves to be the best, so they charge more. My thoughts

If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where Stodoys comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there are step-by-step explanations of how the plan should be done and put together.There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed..
