What Kathrine Hepburn did simply for the right to wear pants was such a boss move, and just another reason why she was one of the greatest of all time.
Lauren Bacall. She was another tough lady. She was suspended several times for going against the big bosses of Warner Brothers. She even was suspended for marching on Washington DC for friends and colleagues that were being blacklisted as communists(wrongfully most of the time but it ruined their lives and careers anyway)when everyone was paranoid after WWII. She didn't take anyone's crap. She was a beautiful, sexy, talented, woman with a sultry voice, strong convictions, and half of a very famous Hollywood couple....Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall ❤❤
There's also Barbara Stanwyck who subverted the studio system by freelancing throughout most of her career, which may have costed her an Oscar (back then, a studio-backed campaigning for an Oscar was more often than not crucial), but also gave her the freedom to take on the roles that she wanted and avoid the egregious demands of the studio execs, something that most actresses of her time couldn't afford.
Barbara Stanwyck absolutely deserves to be on this list in my opinion. She’s was one of the few actresses at the time who chose to become a freelance actress, in order to maintain her professional independence against the studio system, even if it meant she had to work twice harder than the other studio contracted actresses for the same movie roles. All the parts she’d gotten was solely based on her own merits and she’s one of the most iconic movie actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age!
I think Ingrid Bergman deserves to be on this list. Despite being blacklisted by Hollywood after her affair and marriage to Rossellini, she still refused to apologize for it, even after receiving her second Oscar win. She also chose to continue to work in Europe instead of going back to Hollywood. I respect her strength and resilience to remain true to herself, despite all of the unfair treatment she’d had to endure!
Excellent list! Totally knew Olivia De Havilland would be number 1! She also rebelled against Warner Bros to get the part of Melanie in Gone With The Wind. There is a wonderful interview that Olivia did for the 2004 DVD edition of Gone Of The Wind called Melanie Remembers: Reflections By Oliva De Havilland where she talked about it briefly.
MsMojo this list needs a do-over I like that you guys are starting to show Marilyn Monroe in a new light ❤ rather than this tragic Icon 😒...What happen to Marilyn Monroe?! Her fight against the Fox Studio in 1954-1955 left her contract for better paid (she was the biggest movie stars on the planet at that time) and those people on your list were getting more money than her during the those time period! she also wanted better scripts (and not just being through into a movie without reading it) and director approval everyone thought she was crazy for leaving her job and she was on TOP...she was the Queen of Hollywood. She founded her own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions (MMP)-an action that has later been called "instrumental" in the collapse of the studio system. She won all her demands!!!
In a day like today, it's great to feel at school again. Happy tuesday morning Ms Mojo, take care and God bless you. Greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Greta Garbo insisted on equal pay. John Gilbert was making $10,000 a week to her $600 even though she was by far MGM's biggest star. When studio Head Louis B. Mayer refused her demands for equal pay, she uttered her famous line, "I think I go home now" (back to Sweden). It was no bluff. She stayed away from the Studio, unpaid, for seven months. Nothing Mayer did: not threats or smears in the Hollywood press fazed her in the least. Mayer had met his match. In face of Garbo's indifference, he caved into her demands.
The sad part was that, Garbo was only asking for equal pay alongside her male co-stars, in reality, she should have been the highest paid actor in MGM based on merit alone, because she was their most bankable star at the time. The fact that MGM, didn’t want to meet Garbo’s demands is just unacceptable as they were basically admitting they didn’t value her own self worth. It’s just disgusting to know how much misogyny and sexism female actresses had to go through in Hollywood.
I thought Botis Karloff would have been on here, he helped found the Actors Guild and when they first started meeting it was incredibly dangerous to their careers so they has to meet in secret, and he stood up for fellow actors all through his career.
I was expecting James Cagney to be on this list. He sued Warner Brothers and won. Got a new contract, more money and more creative freedom and totally pissed off Jack Warner, so good job all round Jim 👍🏼😀
Carey Grant had to fight tooth and nail to get the movie Father Goose(my all time favorite). He wanted to look his age finally, and be a bit of a brute. He also wanted to work with an actress that was his age, but the studio wouldn't be swayed.
What about Jimmy Cagney? He also sued Warner for breach of contract and won Jack Warner nicknamed Jimmy "The Professional Againster" because Jimmy was complicated also Tallulah Bankhead was complicated due to the fact that in the early 30s she worked at Paramount and her "scandalous" life was hard to conceal and Margaret Sullavan also was a very complicated woman because she had a very explosive temper and even Louis B Mayer was afraid of her
Might as well make a top 10 list of stars who stood up to Harry Cohn. Anybody got a time machine? There's a golden age studio exec who needs a few kicks to the nuts.
Not shocked by most of the women on this list, because you could tell by the way they carried themselves that they weren't the kind to mess with. Thought my girl Babs (Barbara Stanwyck) might make the list though.
Listen to the song and watch the video of “Into the Night” by Benny Mardones. It is a very cringy, creepy song about an older guy lusting after a teenage girl.

What Kathrine Hepburn did simply for the right to wear pants was such a boss move, and just another reason why she was one of the greatest of all time.
Shirley Temple should be on the list. She was really young and had to fend off predators. No wonder she retired at 22 years old.
Good for you Katherine! What you did back in the day took guts!
Lauren Bacall. She was another tough lady. She was suspended several times for going against the big bosses of Warner Brothers. I was thinking her too.

I applaud these people for making a stand against the the toxic infrastructure within Hollywood.
Dietrich also wore those pants and she rocked them, too
I’m really proud of these actors!💪🏼
Given that these actors were risking their careers, but they stand up against the company that ruined their lives or blackmailed them.
They were courageous to rebel. But as Bette Davis said it was that system that made them stars who could rebel.
Yes! Cheers to fighting the system! ❤🍻
Very very great inspiring list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever 😊❤

Olivia Dehaviland. I am shaking my head.
Joanne Woodward 🗽
Hands down to these amazing stars!

The fact That Joan Crawford and Rita are on this list for saing no to a sex proposal is saying a lot about Old Hollywood.
Marilyn Monroe defied Fox and established her own production company. She fought the studio till the very end.
We forget, just how exceedingly intelligent she and a number of her bombshell blonde compatriots were
Yes, I was going to add her, she fought the system and was ahead of her time.
I thought Botis Karloff would have been on here, he helped found the Actors Guild and when they first started meeting it was incredibly dangerous to their careers so they has to meet in secret, and he stood up for fellow actors all through his career.
I have so much respect for bette Davis she truly was brave woman
Bette*
@@Tomboyy9818 thanks for reminding me
I was expecting James Cagney to be on this list. He sued Warner Brothers and won. Got a new contract, more money and more creative freedom and totally pissed off Jack Warner, so good job all round Jim 👍🏼😀
I was hoping for Luise Rainer. She also rebelled wanting to play the lead role in The Good Earth.
love Frank Capera
Carey Grant had to fight tooth and nail to get the movie Father Goose(my all time favorite). He wanted to look his age finally, and be a bit of a brute. He also wanted to work with an actress that was his age, but the studio wouldn't be swayed.
Cary*
That was young Elizabeth Taylor as Amy March with Katherine hroburn
What about Jimmy Cagney? Angels With Dirty Faces! I watched that with my grandma when I was like Ye high❤️
I was sure Marlon Brando would be number 1. Never actually tied himself to a studio during the height of the old Hollywood studio system.
Might as well make a top 10 list of stars who stood up to Harry Cohn. Anybody got a time machine? There's a golden age studio exec who needs a few kicks to the nuts.
Queen
Elizabeth Taylor truly belongs on this list
Not shocked by most of the women on this list, because you could tell by the way they carried themselves that they weren't the kind to mess with. Thought my girl Babs (Barbara Stanwyck) might make the list though.
Bette Davis. I’ll take it.
KATHARINE HEPBURN THE BEST IN EVERYTHING ALWAYS❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love your accent on Frederick Chopin’s name
Hopefully they will succeed again with the strikes
Marilyn Monroe rebelled against type - wanting to do more intelligent movies. She was one of the first women to start her own company too.
Having your own husband trying to pimp you out is wild, that Weinstein before Weinstein came about was disgusting
He sure is. That poor lady......😢 I can only hope Rita was able to have some peace. ❤
Yeah that's truly disgusting
Listen to the song and watch the video of “Into the Night” by Benny Mardones. It is a very cringy, creepy song about an older guy lusting after a teenage girl.
Standing up to predatory male behaviour shouldn’t be regarded as being rebellious Ms Mojo. It’s not a message you should be spreading .🙁👎
