    It sounds like Queens of the Stone Age because it IS Queens of the Stone Age! Josh Homme does guest vocals for Colony of Birchmen :) And the secret track is him reading a letter he sent to Mastodon when he first heard them

      @@JimNewstead hahahaha, I came to say the same thing. There's a little secret bit by Josh Homme at the very end of the album as well. Keep it real!

      came here to mention this as soon as he said it! Josh actually leaked this album with that spoken letter weeks before its release hahahaha

    Metal can be rather samey, uninteresting, predictable and safe. This isn't. It has melody, interesting timbres, changes in tempo and time signature yet retains the good bits of metal - distortion, loudness, beats and guitars. Mastodon have been one of the most interesting metal bands of the last 15 years possibly rivalled only by Gojira. Don't forget Leviathan, Jim - that's the Mastodon album before this one with much the same range of music and an even better cover

      You should checkout the band Hammerhedd then. The new album they released a few weeks ago is STELLAR! It's kinda like if early 90s Helmet went more prog....my favorite album of 2023 so far.

    Happy you liked it Jim! I'm here with the obligatory comment to mention that Mastodon's Crack the Skye is one for the all time greats in metal and you should definitely give it the spin! Not to mention one of the most powerful and rich sound mixes I've come across!

      @ASNnKC913 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leviathan as well! I feel like Jim would enjoy both records, but Crack The Skye a bit more with its proggy nature compared to the ear bludgeoning that is Leviathan. But seeing both records on the channel eventually would be a real treat!

    How anyound could deny the instrumental mastery of this band is insane to me. Hand of Stone --> Siberian Divide has more tasty riffs than most metal bands entire catalogue

    My favorite part of Pendulous Skin is that nobody knows the lyrics. Even when they perform this song live (most recently at the acoustic show in the Atlanta aquarium) Brent distorts his vocals so they are inaudible to make out.
    People have put together pretty decent guesses on what the hell he's singing some of them work better than others.
    It's my favorite song out of the "Elephant Man Trilogy" that they ended their first three albums with.

    Fun Fact: Cedric from The Mars Volta does backup vocals on Siberian Divide (it's the weird effected refrain) and their keyboardist Ikey does the organs on Pendulous Skin : )

    OOOOOOCEAAANSSS MORPH TO GLASSSSS... I enjoyed you enjoying it. Blood Mountain remains my favourite Mastodon album for its soaring vocals, weirdness, mystical lyrics and hard riffs. What an accomplishment.

    I got into them at the beginning of 2020, did a deep dive during the pandemic and became obsessed with them. Because I was digesting their stuff fairly quickly when I got to Blood Mountain (which was fairly early on) it didn't stand out as much as it does now. It really does have the most interesting song writing and energy than any other album. It's so hard to choose favorites but this might be mine of theirs.

    At the risk of someone stealing my idea: I started writing a novel based on this album. The protagonist is a man named Arthur who was bullied and belittled his whole life and resolves to be cursed with lycanthropy to give him strength enough to take revenge. He finds out that revenge is not as sweet a taste as some claim, especially at the cost of his humanity. He then journeys through realities; based around myths and legends, seeking a way to recover his humanity. I've got the outline for most of the chapters but it's nowhere near being complete yet.

    Such a special and unique album. Mastodon has the best discography in metal since their debut remission in 2002, I hope to see you continue your mastodon journey in the future here, really can’t go wrong with any mastodon record, there is truly not another band out there like them. Great pick up of the queens of the Stone Age sound on colony of birchmen, Josh Homme of QOTSA featured on that song and did some vocals on it so that’s why you’re picking up the QOTSA sound there.

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can't believe I actually picked up on a thing, I thought it was just a "sounds a bit like..." moment!
